Guiding Lights and Gentle Shores

Today was a delightful immersion into the coastal landscapes of Mols Bjerge. From the historic Sletterhage Fyr to the tranquil Ahl Strand, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the Alaskan wilderness for the subtle charms of Nordic nature.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Moment. It's amazing how Rikke and Morten Storm Overgaard built a restaurant with a clear sustainable focus. The atmosphere was cozy, the food divine, and the commitment to sustainability truly inspiring. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience that resonates with my own values of living in harmony with nature. I was particularly impressed that they have their own garden and are planning to be self-sufficient. It reminded me of my own small attempts at growing herbs in my Helsinki apartment – though on a slightly grander scale!

Fueled and ready, Markus and I set off to explore Sletterhage Fyr. The drive itself was scenic, with glimpses of the coastline peeking through the rolling hills. As we approached the lighthouse, its white tower with the red lantern room stood proudly against the clear blue sky. The weather was incredibly pleasant, around 20°C (68°F), with a gentle breeze – perfect for a day of exploration. I remembered to put on sunscreen this time, learning from my oversight on the first day.

Sletterhage Fyr, built in 1894, has a rich history. Standing at 16 meters (52 feet), it has guided ships navigating the Kattegat and the entrance to Aarhus Bay for over a century. I learned that the lighthouse was initially equipped with a kerosene lamp and a Fresnel lens, later upgraded to modern LED lights. While we couldn’t go inside the lighthouse tower itself, the surrounding area offered stunning views of the sea and the peninsula's natural beauty. The site is a popular spot for hikers, and I could see why.

The stones whisper tales of ancient volcanoes and glacial journeys, connecting us to the deep history of this land.

There was an exhibit at the lighthouse. It displayed a collection of old navigational instruments and a geological exhibition detailing the formation of the Helgenæs landscape during the ice ages. It was fascinating to learn about the different types of stones found on the beach, stones that can be traced back to prehistoric volcanoes in Norway and Sweden, brought here by the movement of ice sheets. It was a vivid reminder of the powerful forces that shaped this land.

Markus, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the stories of naval battles fought near Helgenæs in 1043, when King Sven Estridsen attacked King Magnus the Good. I, on the other hand, was more intrigued by the exhibit on marine life and the efforts to preserve the coastal environment. It reinforced my belief in the importance of sustainable tourism and responsible travel.

After soaking in the history and the views at Sletterhage Fyr, we drove to Ahl Strand, a serene coastal escape within Mols Bjerge National Park. The soft sandy shore was inviting, and the gentle waves created a soothing soundtrack. The beach wasn't crowded, allowing for a peaceful experience.

We took a leisurely walk along the shore, collecting seashells and breathing in the fresh sea air. The Mols Mountains National Park provides a stunning backdrop to Ahl Strand, with its rolling hills and diverse flora and fauna. I can see why it is called a hidden gem. The park is known for its hiking trails, and I made a mental note to explore them further during our stay.

Ahl Strand is perfect for birdwatching, and I spotted several species I couldn't identify. It was a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the area. We saw families enjoying picnics, couples strolling hand in hand, and children building sandcastles. The atmosphere was relaxed and joyful.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to have lunch at Restaurant Mols Bjerge. The restaurant offered beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. I chose a traditional Danish dish, while Markus opted for something more adventurous. We both agreed that the food was delicious and the service was excellent. It’s always a pleasure to find a restaurant that combines great food with a welcoming atmosphere.

In the late afternoon, we stopped by Sølvballegaard, a local bar. The place had a rustic charm, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, chatting with some locals and learning more about the area. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding – connecting with people and experiencing the local culture firsthand. Sølvballegaard is a conference and cultural venue and it seems to offer intimate concerts in a beautiful setting. I made a mental note to check their events calendar.

For dinner, we decided to try MolsCafeen. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly vibe, and the menu featured a mix of Danish and Italian cuisine. I opted for a classic pasta dish, while Markus chose a traditional Danish fish dish. The food was hearty and satisfying, and the service was friendly and efficient. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As we drove back to our cabin, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the historic Sletterhage Fyr to the serene Ahl Strand, every moment had been special. The rolling hills, the rugged cliffs, and the tranquil beaches had captured my heart. I felt a deep connection to this land, a sense of belonging that I hadn't expected.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Tremosegaard and Jernhatten. I am excited to discover more of the natural wonders of Mols Bjerge National Park. We’ll start the day with breakfast at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols. I have heard great things about their local specialties. I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you all!

Before drifting off to sleep, I spent some time knitting a traditional Finnish pattern. The rhythmic clicking of the needles was soothing, and I felt a sense of peace and contentment. It's these small rituals that keep me grounded, reminding me of home even when I'm far away.

And of course, I made sure to charge my camera and portable phone charger – no more forgetting the essentials! I’m learning to be a more organized traveler, one step at a time.

“Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard. Today was a testament to that quote. Mols Bjerge is slowly changing me, making me appreciate the beauty in simplicity and the importance of preserving our natural world.
