Beacon of Beauty: A Day on Helgenæs
Today was a day of coastal exploration and culinary indulgence as we ventured into the heart of Helgenæs, a stunning peninsula within Mols Bjerge National Park. From the historic Sletterhage Fyr to the charming local eateries, every moment was filled with unique experiences and breathtaking views. Join me as I recount our adventures! Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols. Tucked away in a quaint corner, this place exudes rustic charm. Tina and Brita, who took over Stenbækhus in March 2022, have created a welcoming atmosphere where fresh ingredients and homemade goodness are celebrated.
The cafe itself used to be a farm from 1953. The aroma of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee filled the air as we stepped inside. I opted for their homemade blinis with egg salad and smoked mackerel, while Markus chose the baked portobello with pork rilette and pestomayo. Each bite was a burst of flavor, showcasing the care and quality ingredients that Stenbækhus is known for. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards Sletterhage Fyr, a lighthouse perched on the southwestern tip of Helgenæs. The drive itself was a treat, with rolling hills and vibrant green fields stretching out on either side. As we approached the coast, the landscape transformed into rugged cliffs and heathland, offering glimpses of the Kattegat Sea. I was particularly excited to see this lighthouse, as lighthouses have always been a source of fascination for me. Perhaps it is because of my love for Nordic history, and the importance of maritime navigation to the region.
Arriving at Sletterhage Fyr, we were greeted by the iconic white tower with its red lantern room. Built in 1894, this lighthouse has stood as a beacon for ships navigating the waters for over a century. Though we couldn't go inside the lighthouse tower itself, we wandered around the surrounding area, taking in the panoramic views. The sea sparkled under the clear blue sky, and the fresh, salty air invigorated our senses.

I learned that the lighthouse was built to guide ships to and from the Port of Aarhus. It's amazing to think about the countless vessels that have relied on this beacon over the years. The area around Sletterhage Fyr is also known for its geological significance. Glaciers formed Mols Bjerge during the ice age, leaving behind unique stones that can be traced back to prehistoric volcanoes in Norway and Sweden. It's incredible to think about the forces that shaped this landscape so long ago.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead us to quiet corners of the world, where history and nature intertwine to create something truly special.
After soaking in the beauty of Sletterhage Fyr, we decided to explore more of Helgenæs. We drove along the coastal road, stopping at various viewpoints to admire the scenery. The peninsula is relatively small, only about twenty square kilometers, but it packs a punch in terms of natural beauty. The views across the Bay of Aarhus were stunning, and the charming villages we passed through exuded a sense of tranquility.
One of the highlights was our visit to Tyskertårnet, a concrete watchtower built during the German occupation in World War II. From here, we enjoyed a lovely view to the southern islands in Kattegat. Towards land, there was a view over the pastures to Ellemandsbjerg and Mols Bjerge. The tower serves as a reminder of a difficult period in history, but it also offers a unique perspective on the landscape.
As lunchtime approached, we made our way to Restaurant Mols Bjerge, eager to sample more of the local cuisine. This restaurant is known for its Danish-inspired dishes, prepared with a focus on quality and flavor. We decided to sit outside on the terrace, enjoying the warm sunshine and gentle breeze.

I opted for the fish of the day, while Markus chose a hearty burger made with local beef. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the fresh, seasonal ingredients that are so abundant in this region. The restaurant also had a selection of local beers, which we enjoyed while soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. We chatted with the friendly staff, learning more about the area and its history. It was the perfect midday break.
In the late afternoon, we decided to unwind with a visit to Fuglsøcentret for a drink at their bar. This hotel and conference center is nestled in the heart of Mols Bjerge National Park, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The bar area was cozy and inviting, with a wide selection of local beers and spirits. We settled into comfortable chairs, sipping our drinks and reflecting on the day's adventures.

Fuglsøcentret is more than just a hotel; it's a hub for activities and events in the area. I learned that they host concerts, conferences, and various outdoor activities throughout the year. It's a great base for exploring the national park and immersing yourself in the local culture. The hotel is also known for its commitment to sustainability, which aligns perfectly with my own values. There were even events being hosted at Fuglsøcentret, such as space themed parties.
As the sun began to set, we drove towards Molskroen Strandhotel og Molskroens Brasserie for our final culinary experience of the day. Located right by Lyngsbæk Strand, this beachfront restaurant offers stunning ocean views and a sophisticated dining experience. We had made a reservation in advance, knowing that this place is popular among locals and tourists alike.

Molskroen Strandhotel is known as one of the best restaurants in Denmark, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The restaurant has even been recommended in the Michelin Guide! The ambiance was elegant yet relaxed, with soft lighting and tasteful decor. We were seated at a table with panoramic views of the sea, which added to the magic of the evening.
I chose the traditional French cuisine at Molskroens Brasserie, while Markus decided to try one of the more modern interpretations of the classics. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The service was impeccable, with attentive staff who made us feel welcome and special. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and indulgence.
As we drove back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Helgenæs had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural immersion. It's a place where you can slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the simple things in life. I'm already looking forward to returning and discovering more of what this hidden gem has to offer.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Mols and Trehøje Mols, continuing our journey through Mols Bjerge National Park. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us! Perhaps we'll stop by Camping Ebeltoft - Mols, a local shop. Until then, goodnight from the beautiful Helgenæs!
