Day 9: Westfjords Wonders: Hiking to Möngufoss and Discovering Local Flavors
Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of Hornstrandir, hike to Möngufoss waterfall, and savor authentic Icelandic cuisine with family.
A Day of Waterfalls and Westfjords Charm
Today was a beautiful blend of nature's grandeur and the simple pleasures of local life here in the Westfjords. It’s days like these that remind me why I love sharing these adventures with my family. From a scenic hike to a captivating waterfall and experiencing authentic Icelandic cuisine, today was filled with unforgettable moments.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Dunhagi in Tálknafjörður. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread were so inviting. It felt like stepping into someone's home, and the warmth of the staff made us feel instantly welcome. I opted for the fish soup, a local specialty, while Markus enjoyed the Icelandic lamb. Aino, of course, went straight for the homemade bread with local herbs and spices. The food was incredibly delicious, and the owner, Dagný, was so kind, sharing stories about the region and her passion for using local ingredients. It's experiences like these that truly enrich our travels, connecting us with the heart and soul of a place.
After breakfast, we drove towards the trailhead for Möngufoss (Hlíðarhús). The drive itself was stunning, with dramatic landscapes unfolding around every bend. The Westfjords are truly a hidden gem, with their rugged coastline, towering cliffs, and lush valleys. As a librarian specializing in Arctic and Nordic literature, I’m always drawn to places that feel both wild and steeped in history, and this region certainly delivers on both fronts. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the distant roar of the waterfall.
The hike to Möngufoss was relatively easy, about 5 kilometers, making it perfect for a family outing. The trail wound through verdant meadows and over rocky terrain, offering breathtaking views at every turn. Aino was particularly excited, spotting various birds and wildflowers along the way. She's developing quite the keen eye for nature, something I'm thrilled to encourage. Markus, ever the practical one, kept us on track, ensuring we had enough water and snacks. I did miss my portable solar charger, though – a mental note for future trips!
As we approached Möngufoss, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and the anticipation built. The waterfall is nestled in a serene valley, surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic rock formations. The cascade of water was mesmerizing, creating a cool mist that refreshed us as we stood in awe. We took our time, soaking in the beauty and taking plenty of photos. Aino even tried her hand at sketching the scene in her travel journal.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
After our hike, we drove to Patreksfjörður for lunch at Vestur restaurant / N1 Patreksfjörður.
Based on recent reviews, it seems this place might be permanently closed or have mixed reviews.
Given the uncertainty, we decided to explore other options in town. We ended up at a small, family-run cafe that served delicious fish and chips and offered stunning views of the harbor. It wasn't on our original itinerary, but these spontaneous discoveries often turn out to be the most memorable.
In the afternoon, we made our way to Bolungarvík, a charming town nestled at the foot of towering mountains. Our first stop was Verslun Bjarna Eiríkssonar, a unique shop that combines a grocery store, bookstore, and clothing store. It was a delightful place to browse, offering a glimpse into local life. I picked up a few books on Icelandic folklore, while Aino found a cozy knitted hat. Markus, always on the lookout for practical items, purchased some local snacks for our camping adventures.
For dinner, we dined at Einarshusid, a restaurant with a rich history and a cozy atmosphere. The building itself is over a hundred years old, and you can feel the stories within its walls. I opted for the traditional Icelandic lamb dish, while Markus tried the pepperoni pizza, which apparently is quite famous here. Aino enjoyed a hearty bowl of soup. The food was delicious, and the staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel like part of the family. It was the perfect way to end our day.
As we settle into our campsite for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for these experiences. Sharing the beauty of Iceland with my family is a dream come true, and each day brings new adventures and discoveries. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Stórurðarlundur, a stunning area known for its unique rock formations and serene landscapes. I'm looking forward to another day of hiking, exploring, and creating lasting memories with my loved ones.
This trip has been an incredible journey so far, and I'm excited to see what the remaining days have in store. As we continue our exploration of Hornstrandir, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the natural world, and cherishing the moments we share with our loved ones. It's these simple joys that make life truly meaningful, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience them in this breathtaking corner of the world.
