Island Flavors and Ancient Giants
Today was a day of contrasts, a delightful blend of the exotic sweetness of tropical fruits and the awe-inspiring presence of ancient cedars. Yakushima continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, and I'm eager to share the day's adventures.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's conveniently located, and I needed a good start before heading out to explore. The restaurant has a classic Japanese feel. I opted for a traditional set meal, savoring the local flavors and preparing myself for the day ahead. It reminded me of the small cafes near the Helsinki airport, comforting and familiar.
First on the itinerary was the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. The reviews I had read mentioned it could be a little tricky to find, but the adventure was part of the charm. The garden is home to a variety of tropical plants and fruits from around the world. I was greeted by a local guide who led me through the lush greenery, pointing out different species and sharing insights about their origins. The air was filled with sweet scents, a delightful sensory experience that transported me far from the Nordic landscapes I'm accustomed to.

The guide, a friendly local man, took us around at a brisk pace, sharing the names of the plants. It felt a bit rushed, but his enthusiasm was infectious. The garden itself was beautiful, with many non-native species adding to the tropical ambiance. I learned about bananas, mangoes, papayas, and guavas, seeing them growing in their natural habitat. It was a wonderful experience, especially since you don’t often see such variety in Finland!
At the end of the tour, we were treated to a small fruit platter. I had hoped to buy some fruits to take with me, but that wasn't possible. Still, the sample platter was a delicious way to end the visit, savoring the fresh, tropical flavors of Yakushima. It reminded me of berry picking in the forests around Helsinki, but with a tropical twist.
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
Next, I made my way towards the Kigensugi Cedar. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the island's lush forests. As I ascended, the air grew cooler, and the landscape transformed into a realm of ancient trees and moss-covered rocks. The Kigensugi Cedar is one of the largest and most accessible Yakusugi cedars on the island. It stands at an elevation of about 1,200 meters, its impressive height dominating the landscape.

This ancient tree is estimated to be over a thousand years old, a living testament to nature's resilience and beauty. It's located within a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by incredible biodiversity. As I stood before the Kigensugi, I felt a sense of awe and humility. Its massive trunk and sprawling branches spoke of centuries of growth and endurance.
The Kigensugi Cedar is unique in that more than 10 kinds of other plants, such as the Japanese cypress, grow from the tree. Although the head of the Kigensugi Cedar is dead, it still looks full of energy. It was a truly humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power and resilience of nature.
After spending time with the Kigensugi, I was ready for lunch. I drove to the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant aims to allow you to see, taste, and feel Yakushima. I enjoyed a set meal served in a Yakusugi wooden bowl. The restaurant uses local ingredients, highlighting the unique flavors of the region. It was a satisfying and authentic culinary experience.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to something sweet. I stopped by Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. I had heard great things about their unique flavors, made with local ingredients. The gelato shop is located above the village of Nakama. I opted for the Tankan orange and sea salt flavors. Both were delicious and refreshing, a perfect way to end the day. The gelato had a unique texture, and the natural flavors were just right. I was amazed to find such a gem on a remote island like Yakushima.

For dinner, I chose Hachiman. It’s a small izakaya that offers a few vegan options. I tried the cold tofu, fried tofu (without the fish broth), and edamame. It was a simple but satisfying meal, a taste of local cuisine in a cozy setting.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a leisurely stroll through the town. The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful, a perfect way to reflect on the day's adventures. The stars were out, and the night air was crisp and clean. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and unique culture of Yakushima.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Yakushima National Park and visit the Meoto Sugi, two ancient cedar trees that are connected at their base. I'm looking forward to another day of hiking and discovering the wonders of this enchanting island.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I can't help but feel a sense of connection to this island. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, where ancient trees whisper stories of the past, and where the simple pleasures of life are celebrated. Yakushima has captured my heart, and I'm eager to see what other treasures it holds.
There don't appear to be any local events taking place today.
I'm starting to feel like I'm falling into a comfortable rhythm here. I even managed to find a postcard featuring a bear, which I'll be sending to Aino. I know she'll love it.
Back at the guesthouse, I made sure to charge my camera and organize my notes. I also made a mental note to buy insect repellent and a portable phone charger when I get the chance. It's easy to forget these essentials when you're caught up in the beauty of the surroundings.
As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of ancient cedars and tropical fruits, a sweet and serene symphony of Yakushima's wonders. This solo adventure continues to be a journey of self-discovery, a chance to reconnect with nature and find inspiration in the simplest of things. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
