Kyoto's Sacred Spaces & Green Escapes

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the vibrant spirituality of ancient shrines with the tranquil beauty of meticulously curated gardens. It's days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel in the first place – the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture so different from my own, to learn and grow with every step, and to share those experiences with you all.

Our day began early, with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. I'd heard whispers about their heavenly pancakes, and let me tell you, they lived up to the hype! Fluffy, light, and utterly decadent, they were the perfect fuel for the day ahead. Hans, ever the traditionalist, opted for a Japanese-style breakfast set, complete with miso soup and rice. It's always fun to see him embrace the local cuisine with such enthusiasm. Plus, knowing this restaurant is fully vegan made me feel good about starting our day in a sustainable way.

First on our itinerary was Fushimi Inari Taisha, the iconic shrine famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside. The train ride there was an experience in itself, packed with locals and tourists alike, all eager to witness this cultural landmark. As we approached the shrine, the sheer number of gates was staggering. It felt like stepping into another world, a tunnel of vermillion stretching endlessly into the horizon.

The climb was challenging, especially with the crowds, but the higher we went, the more the atmosphere shifted. The air grew cooler, the crowds thinned, and the sense of serenity deepened. We took our time, stopping to admire the intricate details of each gate, each one a donation from businesses and individuals seeking blessings and prosperity. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the collective faith and dedication that had created this incredible monument.

The journey is the destination, and today’s journey through Kyoto’s cultural landscapes was as enriching as the destinations themselves.

We didn't quite make it to the summit – my California knees aren’t what they used to be but we went far enough to enjoy some stunning views of Kyoto sprawling below. The higher we climbed, the more we were surrounded by the quiet rustling of the forest and the occasional glimpse of playful cats darting amongst the shrines. It was a welcome escape from the bustling city, a chance to connect with nature and reflect on the spiritual significance of this place. I read that Fushimi Inari is open 24/7 and free to enter. I can see why people recommend going early in the morning or closer to sundown to avoid crowds. Still, even with the crowds, it was an amazing experience.

After descending Fushimi Inari, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha for lunch. I'd read rave reviews about their okonomiyaki, a savory pancake layered with noodles, vegetables, and your choice of protein. Hans and I shared a set meal, marveling at the chef's skill as he prepared our okonomiyaki right in front of us on the teppan grill. The crispy edges, the soft center, the rich and savory flavors – it was a culinary masterpiece. The staff were so friendly and spoke fluent English, which made us feel very welcome.

Next on our list was Tōfuku-ji Temple, known for its stunning Zen gardens. After the sensory overload of Fushimi Inari, the temple offered a welcome respite, a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple elegance of Japanese garden design. The Hojo Garden was particularly impressive, a series of four distinct gardens each expressing a different aspect of Zen philosophy. The meticulously raked gravel, the carefully placed stones, the vibrant moss – every element was designed to create a sense of harmony and balance. I found myself completely lost in contemplation, my mind quieted by the serene beauty of the surroundings. I read that the gardens were designed in 1939 by Mirei Shigemori, a well-known gardening expert, who wanted to express Zen through contemporary art. I think he succeeded.

Our final stop of the day was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, a sprawling oasis of green showcasing a diverse collection of plants from around the world. By this point, my feet were definitely starting to feel the strain, but the beauty of the gardens kept me going. We wandered through the bamboo groves, explored the rose garden, and marveled at the exotic flora in the conservatory. It was the perfect way to end our day, surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of nature.

The air was filled with the sweet scent of cherry blossoms, a reminder that spring is in full bloom here in Kyoto. I learned that the gardens were originally opened in 1924 and are the oldest prefectural botanical garden in Japan. They were even used to grow vegetables during World War II! It's amazing how they've been restored to such a beautiful state.

As the sun began to set, we decided to treat ourselves to a pre-dinner drink at L'Escamoteur, a quirky little bar known for its creative cocktails and magical atmosphere. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, this place felt like stepping into another world. The bartender, a charming Frenchman, mixed us up some truly unique concoctions, each one a work of art in itself. The bar was small and intimate, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

For dinner, we had reservations at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in Kyoto-style Kaiseki cuisine. This was a splurge, but one I had been looking forward to for months. The meal was an exquisite symphony of flavors and textures, each course a work of art in itself. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every dish was prepared with the utmost care and attention to detail. The service was impeccable, the staff anticipating our every need with grace and professionalism. It was an unforgettable dining experience, a true celebration of Japanese culinary artistry.
