A Cultural Journey Through Kyoto with My Husband
Day 13: Exploring Kyoto's Spiritual Heart: Temples and Treasures
Discover the serene beauty of Kyoto's temples, from Nanzen-ji's Zen gardens to Chionin's historical grandeur and Shugakuin's imperial elegance.
A Day of Temples and Tranquility
Today was a deep dive into the spiritual heart of Kyoto, a day filled with the serenity of ancient temples and the vibrant energy of local life. Hans and I set out early, eager to explore some of the city's most significant cultural landmarks. It was a day of reflection, appreciation, and a deeper connection to the beauty of Japan.
Our first stop was the magnificent Nanzen-ji Temple. As we approached, the sheer scale of the Sanmon Gate was breathtaking. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a perfect sensory blend that set the tone for the day. Wandering through the temple grounds, I was struck by the harmonious blend of nature and architecture. The meticulously raked Zen gardens invited contemplation, each stone and ripple telling a silent story. We took our time, Hans with his camera, capturing the essence of each moment, and me, trying to soak it all in, etching the scenes into my memory.

The Biwa Lake Canal Aqueduct at Nanzen-ji was a particularly striking sight. The red brick arches, a testament to engineering ingenuity, stood in stark contrast to the traditional wooden structures of the temple. It was a reminder of Kyoto's ability to seamlessly blend the old and the new, a characteristic that continues to fascinate me.
In the heart of Kyoto, history whispers through ancient stones and echoes in the serene gardens, inviting a journey of self-discovery and cultural immersion.
After Nanzen-ji, we made our way to Chionin Temple, the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. The sheer size of the temple complex was awe-inspiring. The massive Sanmon Gate, the largest wooden gate in Japan, left me speechless. As we walked through the grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence, knowing that this place has been a center of spiritual significance for centuries. The intricate details of the temple buildings, the ornate carvings, and the serene atmosphere transported me to another time.

One of the highlights of Chionin was the main hall, where we sat in silence, listening to the soft chants of the monks. It was a moment of profound peace, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The air was thick with incense, and the flickering candlelight created an ethereal ambiance. I closed my eyes, letting the sounds and smells wash over me, feeling a sense of connection to something larger than myself.
Our final temple visit of the day was to Shugakuin Imperial Villa, a sprawling complex of gardens and buildings nestled in the hills of northeastern Kyoto. Getting there required a bit of a trek, but the journey was well worth it. The villa, built in the 17th century by Emperor Gomizuno, is a testament to Japanese landscape design. The gardens are divided into three sections – the Upper, Middle, and Lower Villas – each with its own unique character and charm. Unfortunately, we had to book the tour in advance and it was fully booked, so we could only admire the Villa from afar.

As we walked through the meticulously manicured gardens, I was struck by the harmony between nature and human design. The ponds, streams, and waterfalls were carefully arranged to create a sense of tranquility and balance. The tea houses and pavilions offered glimpses into the lives of the imperial family, a reminder of the rich history that permeates every corner of Kyoto. The views from the villa were simply stunning, offering panoramic vistas of the city below. It was the perfect place to end our day of temple hopping, a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the beauty of nature.
After our spiritual explorations, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Inobun, a charming shop known for its unique selection of lifestyle goods. Located in the Shijo Kawaramachi area, Inobun is a treasure trove of stylish fashion accessories, kitchen supplies, furniture, and stationery. Each floor of the five-story store offered a different ambiance, from the aromatherapy goods on the second floor to the quirky stationery on the top floor. I found myself drawn to the natural designs and the emphasis on bringing joy to everyday life. Hans, surprisingly, was captivated by the unique kitchen gadgets, already planning new culinary adventures back in Berlin.

We picked up a few souvenirs – a beautiful silk scarf for me, a handcrafted tea set for Hans, and some whimsical paper lanterns for our friends back home. It was the perfect way to capture the essence of our day, tangible reminders of the beauty and serenity we had experienced.
For breakfast, we had the pleasure of dining at The SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. Housed in a beautifully restored traditional building, the restaurant exuded elegance and charm. The menu was a delightful fusion of Japanese and Western flavors, and we savored every bite. The pastries were particularly divine, flaky and buttery, a perfect start to our day of exploration.
