A Cultural Journey Through Kyoto with My Husband
Day 14: Kyoto's Artistic Farewell: Craft, Castle, and Serene Parks
Exploring Kyoto's crafts, castles, and peaceful parks on our final day, a perfect blend of culture and nature before heading home.
A Day of Artistic Discoveries and Peaceful Goodbyes
As our Kyoto adventure draws to a close, I wanted to soak in every last bit of this city's magic. Today was a blend of art, history, and nature—a perfect farewell to a place that has captured my heart. Hans and I set out with a mix of excitement and a touch of melancholy, knowing this would be our last full day in Kyoto.
Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Hanasaki, a charming spot near our hotel. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The delicate flavors and artful presentation were a reminder of how much care the Japanese put into every detail, even something as simple as breakfast.
First on our agenda was the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design. As someone who appreciates the blend of art and functionality, I was eager to see what this museum had to offer. The museum is housed in a beautiful, traditional building, which in itself was a treat to explore. Inside, we were greeted by an impressive collection of contemporary crafts, from ceramics and textiles to lacquerware and metalwork. I was particularly drawn to the intricate details of the kimonos on display. The craftsmanship was simply stunning, and it was fascinating to learn about the techniques and traditions behind each piece.

I found myself captivated by a display of Kyoto Yuzen silk dyeing. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns were breathtaking. I learned that this technique dates back to the Edo period and is still practiced by artisans today. I even picked up a small silk scarf as a memento, a little piece of Kyoto's artistry to bring back home to Berlin.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of discovery and appreciation for the artistry that surrounds you.
Next, we headed to Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. This castle, built in the early 17th century, served as the residence of the Tokugawa shogunate during their rule. As we walked through the imposing gates, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history that unfolded within these walls.

The Ninomaru Palace, the main building of the castle, is a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture. The intricate carvings, painted screens, and tatami mats were a feast for the eyes. The famous 'nightingale floors' were particularly fascinating. These floors were designed to squeak when stepped upon, serving as an ingenious security system to alert the occupants of any intruders. I couldn't resist shuffling my feet a little to hear the distinctive chirping sound.
Wandering through the castle gardens, I was struck by the serene beauty of the landscape. The meticulously manicured lawns, tranquil ponds, and carefully placed stones created a sense of harmony and balance. It was the perfect place to take a moment and reflect on the history and culture of this remarkable city.
For lunch, we indulged in a traditional Kyoto cuisine at Teramachi Yoshikura. This restaurant, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, offered a multi-course kaiseki meal that was a true culinary experience. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients and the chef's impeccable skill. The delicate flavors and textures were a delight to the senses, and it was a pleasure to savor each bite.

After lunch, we made our way to Kodaiji Park, a sprawling green space that surrounds Kodaiji Temple. This park is particularly beautiful in the spring, with cherry blossoms in full bloom. Although we were a bit past peak bloom, there were still plenty of blossoms to admire, and the park was alive with the vibrant colors of spring.

We strolled along the winding paths, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding hills and temples. The park was a peaceful oasis, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me as I listened to the gentle breeze rustling through the trees. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our journey.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Jiki Miyazawa, a renowned restaurant known for its modern take on traditional Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant had a sleek, minimalist design, and the atmosphere was sophisticated yet welcoming. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of innovative dishes that showcased the chef's creativity and skill.

One of the highlights of the meal was a dish of grilled wagyu beef with truffle sauce. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the truffle sauce added a touch of decadence. It was a truly unforgettable culinary experience, and the perfect way to celebrate our last night in Kyoto.
After dinner, we decided to cap off the evening with a visit to Bar Dram. This cozy bar had a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, and the bartender was a true mixologist, crafting creative and delicious cocktails. I ordered a gin-based concoction with yuzu and ginger, while Hans opted for a classic whiskey sour. As we sipped our drinks, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip.

As I sit here in our hotel room, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible experiences we've had in Kyoto. From the ancient temples and serene gardens to the vibrant culture and exquisite cuisine, this city has truly captured my heart. I'm so grateful that Hans and I were able to share this journey together, and I know that the memories we've made here will stay with us for a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Berlin. While I'm excited to return home, I know that a part of me will always remain in Kyoto. This city has a way of getting under your skin, of captivating your senses and inspiring your soul. I can't wait to come back someday and explore more of its hidden treasures.
This trip has been a reminder of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures, connecting with new people, and expanding your horizons. Travel has a way of opening your mind and your heart, of making you more aware of the world around you and more appreciative of the beauty that exists in it. As I prepare to leave Kyoto, I feel inspired, refreshed, and ready to take on whatever adventures life has in store.
Thank you, Kyoto, for the memories. Until next time!
As I reflect on our journey, I'm reminded of a quote by the great travel writer, Pico Iyer:
We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again – to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more.
This trip to Kyoto has been all of that and more. It's been a journey of discovery, connection, and renewal. And as we prepare to return to our everyday lives, I know that we'll carry the spirit of Kyoto with us, inspiring us to live each day with curiosity, gratitude, and a sense of wonder.
