Exploring the Coastal Charms of Essaouira with Friends
Day 1: First Impressions of Essaouira: A Journey Through History and Culture
Discover the enchanting Medina, vibrant port, and historic Sqala de la Kasbah in Essaouira, as we begin our Moroccan adventure.
Essaouira's Embrace: A Day of Discovery
After months of planning, our Essaouira adventure has officially begun! The anticipation of experiencing this coastal gem has been building, and today, the reality exceeded all expectations. From the moment we stepped into the Medina, we were enveloped in a sensory tapestry of sights, sounds, and aromas that painted an unforgettable picture of Moroccan life.
Our journey started early this morning, leaving the familiar streets of Berlin behind for the promise of sun-kissed shores and vibrant culture. The flight to Marrakech was smooth, and the drive to Essaouira offered a scenic preview of Morocco's diverse landscapes. As the city came into view, perched on the Atlantic coast, I knew we were in for something special. And I was not disappointed. I am so glad Hans encouraged me to take this trip with my friends, as I have been needing a break from work and Berlin in general. I think this is exactly what I needed!
Breakfast at The Loft
Our first stop was The Loft for breakfast, a charming café recommended by several locals.
The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with a blend of traditional Moroccan decor and modern touches. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (flaky pancakes), honey, and mint tea.
The msemen was perfectly crispy and the honey added a touch of sweetness that complemented the mint tea beautifully. It was the perfect start to our day of exploration.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them with all your senses.
Wandering the Medina of Essaouira
After breakfast, we dived headfirst into the heart of Essaouira – the Medina.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Medina is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, each corner revealing a new surprise. The blue and white washed buildings created a calming backdrop to the bustling activity. I immediately pulled out my camera, eager to capture the essence of this magical place.
The air was filled with the scent of spices, the sound of artisans hammering metal, and the vibrant colors of textiles and ceramics. Unlike the bustling souks of Marrakech, the Medina of Essaouira felt more relaxed and manageable, allowing us to wander at our own pace and soak in the atmosphere.
We explored the artisan workshops, watching craftsmen carve intricate designs into thuya wood and create beautiful silver jewelry. I picked up a few small souvenirs, promising myself I’d leave room in my suitcase for more treasures. My friend Sarah, who has a keen eye for design, was particularly fascinated by the Berber carpets, admiring the intricate patterns and vibrant colors.
Lunch at Restaurant la tolérance
For lunch, we chose Restaurant la tolérance, a highly recommended spot in the heart of the Medina.
The restaurant offered a traditional Moroccan menu, and we decided to try a variety of dishes to share. The tagine with lamb and prunes was a standout, the lamb tender and flavorful, and the prunes adding a touch of sweetness. We also enjoyed a couscous dish with vegetables, perfectly seasoned and incredibly satisfying. I must admit, I am pleasantly surprised with the food here!
Sitting on the terrace, enjoying the delicious food and the warm February sun, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me.
Exploring the Port de Essaouira
After lunch, we made our way to the Port de Essaouira, a bustling hub of activity where fishing boats bobbed in the water and fishermen unloaded their daily catch.
The sight of the blue boats, a signature of Essaouira, was incredibly picturesque. The air was filled with the cries of seagulls and the salty scent of the sea. We watched as fishermen mended their nets and locals haggled over the freshest fish. I was captivated by the energy and authenticity of the port, a stark contrast to the touristy areas we had seen earlier.
I learned that Essaouira has been a fishing port for centuries, playing a vital role in the local economy. The port is also known for its traditional boat building, and we saw craftsmen constructing new vessels using age-old techniques. It was fascinating to witness this blend of history and modern-day life.
Sqala de La Kasbah: A Glimpse into History
Our final stop of the day was the Sqala de La Kasbah, a historic fortress offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Medina.
As we walked along the ramparts, I imagined what it must have been like to defend the city from invaders centuries ago. The cannons that lined the walls were a stark reminder of Essaouira's strategic importance throughout history. The views from the Sqala were breathtaking, the waves crashing against the rocks below and the Medina stretching out in a maze of blue and white buildings.
The Sqala de La Kasbah, I discovered, was built in the 18th century and served as a military defense structure. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction, offering a glimpse into Essaouira's rich past. As someone who enjoys history and architecture, I found this stop particularly fascinating.
Taros: Sunset Cocktails
As the sun began to set, we headed to Taros, a bar recommended for its stunning views and lively atmosphere.
Perched above the Medina walls, Taros offered a perfect vantage point to watch the sunset over the Atlantic. We ordered cocktails and sat back, enjoying the music and the company of fellow travelers. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, from fiery oranges to soft pinks, as the sun dipped below the horizon. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Dinner at Caravane Café
For dinner, we ventured to Caravane Café, known for its eclectic decor and vibrant atmosphere.
This café is a true gem, filled with colorful artwork, exotic plants, and Moroccan artifacts. The menu was a fusion of Moroccan and international cuisine, and we enjoyed dishes like tagine and grilled seafood. As the evening progressed, live Gnaoua music filled the air, and belly dancers entertained the diners. It was an unforgettable experience, a true celebration of Moroccan culture.
The Caravane Café, I learned, was founded by a French artist who wanted to create a space that celebrated art and culture. The café has become a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, known for its lively atmosphere and unique decor. It was the perfect place to end our first day in Essaouira.
As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for this experience. Essaouira has already captured my heart, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit Plage d'Essaouira, Gallery Kasbah, and Place Moulay Hassan tomorrow. I am also keen to visit Histoire de Filles, as I am hoping to find a special souvenir to bring home to Hans. I am also looking forward to trying out Ocean Vagabond for breakfast, Restaurant d'Orient et d'Ailleurs for lunch, and Umia Restaurant for dinner tomorrow!
This trip is off to a great start, and I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all!
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
The weather today was mild, with a high of around 20°C (68°F), perfect for exploring the city. I was glad I packed a light jacket for the cooler evenings, though I did forget my adapter for the Moroccan outlets! I will need to pick one up tomorrow. I am also happy to hear that there are several festivals in Morocco this year, however, it seems we will not be able to attend any during our stay here in Essaouira. Perhaps Hans and I can come back another time to attend one!
