A Day of Discoveries
Today was another one of those days that makes you realize why you travel. It wasn't just about seeing new places; it was about experiencing the heart of the Douro Valley, from its breathtaking views to its rich culinary traditions. I embraced the region's beauty, savored its flavors, and let myself be swept away by the tranquil rhythm of vineyard life. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded my Berlin apartment for a life on the road, chasing stories and sunsets.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cantina de Ventozelo, a place that once served meals to farm workers and now welcomes guests with open arms. The drive there was beautiful. Nestled amidst rolling hills, the restaurant offered panoramic views of the Douro River. I enjoyed scrambled eggs, fresh bread, and local cheeses while soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The Cantina prides itself on using ingredients sourced directly from the quinta and regional producers, ensuring a sustainable and delicious start to the day.

The Douro Valley isn't just a place you see; it's a feeling you carry with you long after you've left.
After breakfast, I made my way to Miradouro de Santa Marinha. The viewpoint is located next to a small chapel, a place of pilgrimage for the locals. The views were simply stunning. From there, I could see the Douro River winding its way through the valley and the village of Tua in the distance. The landscape was a patchwork of vineyards and rolling hills, a testament to the region's rich winemaking heritage. It was a perfect spot to take some photos and simply breathe in the fresh, crisp air.

Next on the agenda was Quinta das Carvalhas, one of the most iconic estates in the Douro Valley. References to this vineyard date back to 1759, and it occupies a prominent position on the left bank of the Douro River, facing Pinhão. The estate covers the entire hillside, extending to the ridge line and part of the upper slope of the right bank of the Torto River. I decided to take the Vineyard Guided Tour, eager to learn more about the estate and its wines. The tour took me through the vineyards, explaining the different grape varieties and the unique terroir of the region. The views from the top of the hill were breathtaking, offering a 360-degree panorama of the Douro Valley.

The tour concluded with a wine tasting, where I sampled some of Quinta das Carvalhas' finest wines. The guide explained the nuances of each wine, from the fruity aromas to the complex flavors. I particularly enjoyed the red wine, which had a rich, full-bodied taste with hints of spice and oak. As someone who has come to appreciate wine more and more on my travels, this tasting was a definite highlight.
Lunch was at Writer's Place, a charming restaurant in Pinhão with captivating views of the Douro River and vineyards. The restaurant is small and cozy, serving delectable dishes crafted from local cuisine. I opted for a traditional Portuguese dish, which was bursting with flavor and perfectly complemented the stunning scenery. The relaxed ambiance and romantic atmosphere made it an ideal spot to savor an outdoor lunch. I also enjoyed a glass of local wine, which was the perfect accompaniment to the meal.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping at Time By Wine, a wine store in the heart of Pinhão. The store offers an impressive selection of regional wines, including the famous Port wines for which the Douro Valley is celebrated. The staff was knowledgeable and eager to share insights about the different varietals and the unique terroir that gives these wines their distinct character. I picked up a few bottles to take back to Berlin, a little piece of the Douro to share with Hans.

As evening approached, I made my way to São LUIZ by Chef Vitor de Oliveira for dinner. The restaurant is located at Quinta de São Luiz, offering stunning views of the Douro River. Chef Vitor de Oliveira's experience in gastronomy dates back to 1994, and his new space at Quinta de São Luiz is already making waves. The river Douro serves as the main inspiration for the gastronomic concept developed, which has the traditions of the Douro region as its backdrop and the flavors worked on and presented in an informal and organic way.

The meal was a feast for the senses, with each dish showcasing the region's finest ingredients. I started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by a main course of roasted lamb with seasonal vegetables. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. For dessert, I indulged in a decadent chocolate mousse, which was the perfect ending to the meal. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was elegant and refined.
As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the Douro Valley. It's a place of stunning natural beauty, rich culinary traditions, and warm, welcoming people. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit Quinta de Santa Marinha and the Viewpoint of São Leonardo de Galafura. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Sabores do Douro, lunch at Terraçu's Restaurant, and dinner at Solar Douro. And, of course, a visit to Douro Sky Lounge for a nightcap.
The Douro Valley has a way of captivating your heart and soul. The views from Miradouro de Santa Marinha were breathtaking, offering a glimpse of the region's natural beauty. The Vineyard Guided Tour at Quinta das Carvalhas provided an immersive experience into the world of winemaking, while Writer's Place offered a charming spot to savor local cuisine. Time By Wine was a treasure trove of regional wines, and São LUIZ by Chef Vitor de Oliveira provided a culinary journey that celebrated the region's flavors.
For anyone planning a trip to the Douro Valley, I highly recommend taking the time to explore its viewpoints, vineyards, restaurants, and wine stores. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've left.
