Kyoto's Cultural Tapestry: A Day of Discovery

Today was all about immersing myself in the multifaceted culture of Kyoto. From the grand historical narratives etched within castle walls to the vibrant, contemporary world of manga and the intimate spaces of artistic creation, Kyoto continued to surprise and enchant me. It's amazing how much history and creativity are packed into this one city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ajikyu. Pieter and I squeezed into the tiny, bustling izakaya, a place recommended by a local we met a few days ago. The owner didn't speak much English, and there wasn't a menu, but we put ourselves in her capable hands. What followed was a series of small, exquisite dishes – grilled fish, perfectly seasoned vegetables, and the most delicate tofu I've ever tasted. It felt like stepping into someone's home, a true taste of everyday Kyoto life. It was a delightful start to a day filled with exploration.

First on our itinerary was Nijo Castle. The sheer scale of the place was impressive, with its imposing stone walls and wide moats. As we wandered through the Ninomaru Palace, I couldn’t help but imagine the shoguns who once walked those same corridors. The 'nightingale floors' were particularly fascinating – designed to chirp underfoot to warn of intruders. It's ingenious! The intricate details of the palace architecture, with its decorated ceilings and painted sliding doors, offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the shogunate. I was particularly struck by the contrast between the public audience rooms and the more private living quarters, a clear reflection of the rigid social hierarchy of the time. What resonated with me most was the castle's role in pivotal moments of Japanese history. To think that this was the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu established his shogunate, and later, where Tokugawa Yoshinobu declared the end of it, is simply astounding. The gardens, though stark in their winter beauty, provided a tranquil space to reflect on the castle's rich past.

“The essence of art is not to be found in grand gestures, but in the quiet details that reveal the soul.”

From the historical grandeur of Nijo Castle, we ventured into the colorful and captivating world of the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Housed in a renovated elementary school, the museum was a delightful mix of nostalgia and contemporary pop culture. The 'Wall of Manga' was an overwhelming sight – shelves upon shelves filled with thousands of manga volumes. Pieter, a software engineer with a secret love for coding and comics, was in his element. We spent hours browsing through the collection, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. I was particularly drawn to the exhibits showcasing the history of manga, from its early origins in woodblock prints to its modern-day global phenomenon. It was fascinating to see how manga has evolved over time, reflecting changing social values and artistic styles. The museum also had a room dedicated to the hands of famous manga artists, casts of their hands holding pens. It was a quirky and endearing tribute to the creators behind these imaginative worlds. There was even a performance of 'Kamishibai', a traditional Japanese storytelling with pictures, which was surprisingly engaging despite my limited Japanese. It was a fun and immersive experience that gave me a newfound appreciation for the art of manga.

For lunch, we found a cozy spot called Nishikawa. The lunch course was a delightful exploration of seasonal flavors, each dish a miniature work of art. The mackerel sushi was a standout, rich and flavorful, and the tempura was light and crispy. It was a meal that nourished both the body and the soul.

Our final stop for the day was Kawai Kanjiro's House. Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, this house was a world unto itself. Kawai Kanjiro, a renowned ceramic artist and key figure in the Mingei (folk art) movement, designed and built the house himself in 1937. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. The house was a harmonious blend of Japanese and Western elements, with traditional tatami mats and shoji screens alongside Western-style furniture and an open hearth. What struck me most was the seamless integration of art and life. Kawai Kanjiro designed every detail of the house, from the furniture to the light fixtures, creating a space that reflected his artistic vision and his philosophy of 'living is work, and work is living'. The house was filled with his ceramics, sculptures, and calligraphy, each piece reflecting his love for simplicity and natural materials. The climbing kiln at the back of the house was particularly impressive, a testament to Kawai Kanjiro's dedication to his craft. Wandering through the house, I felt a sense of peace and inspiration, a reminder that art can be found in the everyday moments of life.

Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped by the Kyoto Crafts Store, a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for family and friends – a delicate porcelain teacup, a hand-painted silk scarf, and a set of incense sticks with a calming sandalwood scent. It was a way to bring a piece of Kyoto back home with me.

For dinner, we decided to try Sakuragawa, a Kaiseki restaurant near our hotel. The restaurant was intimate and elegant, with a counter overlooking the kitchen. We opted for the Kaiseki dinner, a multi-course meal that showcased the best of Kyoto cuisine. Each course was a surprise, a delicate balance of flavors and textures. The chef's attention to detail was remarkable, from the presentation of the dishes to the sourcing of the ingredients. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of Kyoto's cultural landscape. From the grandeur of Nijo Castle to the playful creativity of the Manga Museum and the serene beauty of Kawai Kanjiro's House, Kyoto has something to offer everyone. And tomorrow, we're off to Fushimi Inari Taisha, Tofuku-ji Temple, and Kyoto Tower. I can't wait to see what other wonders await us! Knowing that we will be visiting the Fushimi Inari Taisha, I'm already anticipating the thousands of vermillion torii gates winding up the mountain. I've heard it's a truly breathtaking sight, and I'm eager to experience it for myself. This trip is turning out to be exactly the kind of immersive cultural experience that Pieter and I were hoping for, and I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you.

I'm so grateful to be sharing this experience with Pieter. His enthusiasm and curiosity make every day an adventure. And I'm reminded of how lucky I am to have found someone who shares my passion for travel and sustainable living. Together, we're exploring the world, one mindful step at a time.

I'm also thinking about what I've learned today about Japanese aesthetics. From the minimalist design of Kawai Kanjiro's House to the intricate details of Nijo Castle, Japanese art and architecture seem to be guided by a deep respect for nature and a love for simplicity. It's a philosophy that resonates deeply with me, and I'm eager to incorporate it into my own life back in Delft.

And now, as the day draws to a close, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. Kyoto has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight from Kyoto!
