Cherry Blossom Adventures in Kyoto with Friends
Day 1: Golden Reflections and Ancient Echoes: My First Day in Kyoto
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's golden temples and historic castles, savoring exquisite cuisine and vibrant culture with cherished friends.
Kyoto's Glimmering Start
My first day in Kyoto was nothing short of magical. From the moment we stepped off the train, a sense of serene excitement filled the air. The city, already adorned with the promise of cherry blossoms, beckoned us into its embrace. Pieter and I, along with our friends, were eager to explore the cultural heart of Japan, and today's itinerary promised a deep dive into its history and beauty.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant exuded a traditional charm, with its warm wooden interior and the option of counter seating or private tatami rooms. Opting for the counter, I enjoyed watching the chef meticulously prepare each dish. The set meal featured fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables, a delightful introduction to Kyoto's culinary scene. What stood out was the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, offering a variety of Kyoto-style side dishes. I particularly enjoyed the pumpkin and taro root, which paired perfectly with the fluffy rice.

To walk the streets of Kyoto is to step back in time, where every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered.
Fueled and ready, we made our way to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached, the sight of the temple shimmering in the morning sun took my breath away. The gold leaf covering the pavilion created a dazzling reflection on the surrounding pond, making it look like a scene from a fairytale. We strolled through the meticulously landscaped gardens, each step offering a new perspective of the radiant structure. The serene atmosphere was enhanced by the gentle breeze rustling through the pine trees. It was easy to see why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Kyoto's most popular attractions.

Next on our list was Nijō Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history. The castle, built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shogunate, is a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture. Walking through the Ninomaru Palace, I was captivated by the intricate details of the sliding doors, known as *fusuma*, and the ornate ceilings. The 'nightingale floors' were particularly fascinating; designed to creak underfoot, they served as an ingenious security measure against intruders. Wandering through the expansive gardens, I imagined what life must have been like for the shoguns who once resided here.

I was thrilled to learn that Nijo Castle will be hosting “NAKED meets Nijo-jo Castle 2025 Sakura” until April 13! It is a digital cherry-blossom viewing event, where about 300 real cherry blossom trees of 50 varieties will be illuminated with illuminations and projection mapping to brighten up the spring night. We might need to come back to enjoy this artistic cherry blossom viewing while experiencing a fascinating fusion of technology and tradition at one of Kyoto's famous landmarks!
For lunch, we headed to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a renowned tonkatsu restaurant. Despite not being traditional Kyoto cuisine, it came highly recommended, and I was eager to try it. We waited in line, which only heightened our anticipation. Once inside, I ordered the pork tenderloin with prawn cutlet set. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and incredibly moist on the inside. What made the experience unique was the ability to blend my dipping sauce at the table, grinding sesame seeds and adding a special tonkatsu sauce. The set also included free-flow rice, miso soup, and cabbage salad, making it a satisfying and delicious meal.

After lunch, we decided to explore Kyoto LOFT, a multi-floor emporium offering a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products. From innovative home goods and trendy stationery to fashionable accessories and unique gifts, there was something for everyone. I picked up a beautiful *washi* paper set and a couple of quirky kitchen gadgets, perfect souvenirs to remind me of our time in Kyoto. It’s a great spot to find unique, locally made items that capture the essence of modern urban living.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kikunoi Roan for dinner. This restaurant, a sister establishment to the two-Michelin-starred Kikunoi, offered a modern take on classic *kaiseki* cuisine. The ambiance was elegant yet relaxed, and the service was impeccable. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every dish showcased the chef's mastery of Japanese culinary techniques. The meal was a perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and gastronomic delights.

One of the highlights was the white miso-marinated egg yolk, which had a bold flavor. Also the crab rice cooked with crab broth and meat was a great way to end the savory courses, before heading to the desert. The staff were very attentive.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Kyoto had already captivated me. The blend of ancient traditions and modern life, the stunning architecture, and the exquisite cuisine made it a truly unique destination. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji, and the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey with my friends. And perhaps we'll cap off the day with a drink at L'Escamoteur, a bar that sounds intriguing!
