Cherry Blossom Adventures in Kyoto with Friends
Day 8: Kyoto's Enchanting Evening: Temples, Parks, and Gion's Secrets
Discover Kyoto's serene beauty at Kodaiji Temple, Maruyama Park's cherry blossoms, and Gion's vibrant nightlife. A day of cultural immersion!
A Kyoto Evening to Remember
Today was a day of wandering through Kyoto's enchanting tapestry, where ancient temples met blossoming parks and the allure of Gion beckoned us into the night. It’s amazing how each day here unveils a new layer of beauty, history, and culture. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom, painting the city in shades of pink and white, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Khaos Spice Diner. It might seem odd to start a day in Japan with Thai food, but the reviews were too tempting to ignore. Pieter, ever the adventurous foodie, was especially excited. I opted for a classic Pad See Ew, while he went for something spicier. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures.
First on the agenda was Kodaiji Temple. As we approached, the temple's serene atmosphere enveloped us, a world away from the bustling city. The meticulously raked gravel gardens exuded a sense of calm, inviting contemplation. Wandering through the bamboo grove, sunlight dappled through the towering stalks, creating an ethereal glow. The temple's architecture, with its intricate woodwork and peaceful teahouses, transported us back in time. I found myself reflecting on the impermanence of things, a theme so deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its sights, but in the way it makes you feel – a sense of peace, wonder, and connection to something ancient and profound.
Next, we strolled through Maruyama Park, a sea of cherry blossoms in full bloom. The park was alive with locals and tourists alike, all reveling in the ephemeral beauty of the sakura. Families picnicked under the trees, their laughter mingling with the gentle breeze. Street performers entertained the crowds, adding to the festive atmosphere. Pieter, armed with his camera, was in his element, capturing the fleeting moments of beauty. I found a quiet spot beneath a weeping cherry tree, its cascading branches creating a pink canopy. It was the perfect place to simply soak in the moment, feeling grateful for the beauty that surrounded me. I thought about how lucky I was to experience this with Pieter and our friends. It reminded me of the tulip fields back home in the Netherlands, but with a uniquely Japanese touch.

For lunch, we ventured to Nakamura, a local favorite. The restaurant was small and unassuming, but the food was simply divine. We savored each bite, appreciating the chef's dedication to using fresh, local ingredients. Pieter, always eager to try new things, ordered a selection of dishes, and we shared them family-style. It was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of Kyoto. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Delft, though I knew it wouldn't be quite the same without the authentic Japanese ingredients.

As evening approached, we made our way to Gion Corner, eager to experience the traditional arts of Kyoto. The performance was a captivating blend of dance, music, and theater, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. The geishas, with their graceful movements and elaborate costumes, were mesmerizing. I was particularly impressed by the traditional puppetry, a truly unique art form. It was a wonderful way to immerse ourselves in the local culture, gaining a deeper appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship of Kyoto. I couldn't help but compare it to the cultural performances I'd seen back in Canada, realizing how diverse and fascinating the world truly is.

After the show, we decided to explore Gion's enchanting streets, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha on her way to an appointment. The narrow alleyways were dimly lit, creating an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. We wandered past traditional wooden machiya houses, their paper lanterns casting a warm glow. Though we didn't spot any geishas, the ambiance of Gion was enough to captivate us. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the modern city. I imagined what it must have been like to live in this district centuries ago, and how much had changed, and yet, how much remained the same.
To cap off our evening, we decided to check out The Common One Bar Kyoto. The bar had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, with a wide selection of local and international drinks. I opted for a Japanese whiskey, while Pieter tried a local craft beer. We chatted with the friendly bartenders, learning more about Kyoto's nightlife and local culture. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring, reflecting on the incredible experiences we'd had. I even managed to practice my Dutch a little, surprising the bartenders with my language skills.

Dinner was at Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant recommended by a local friend. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, its entrance marked by a simple wooden sign. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with traditional Japanese decor and soft lighting. We sat at the counter, watching the chefs prepare our meals with meticulous care. I ordered the chef's special, a delicate assortment of seasonal vegetables and grilled fish. Pieter, ever the carnivore, opted for the Wagyu beef, which he declared was the best he'd ever tasted. The meal was a true culinary delight, a perfect ending to a perfect day. As we walked back to Hotel Forza Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Kyoto had truly captured my heart, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji Temple, and Kinkaku-ji. I've heard so much about the Zen garden at Ryoan-ji, and I'm eager to experience its tranquility firsthand. Ninna-ji Temple is known for its beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere, while Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks. I'm sure it will be another day filled with beauty, history, and culture. I am also looking forward to visiting Shijo Kawaramachi to do some shopping, and hopefully pick up a few souvenirs.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Kyoto has exceeded all my expectations, and I'm already planning my next visit. It's a city that truly nourishes the soul, leaving you feeling inspired, refreshed, and connected to something greater than yourself. And to think, this adventure all started with a simple desire to see the cherry blossoms. I'm so glad Pieter and I decided to embark on this trip with our friends. Sharing these experiences with them has made it even more special. Now, time for some rest before another day of exploring this magical city!
