Osaka Adventures: A Day of Castles, Cuisine, and Crowds
Today was a day of contrasts – ancient history meeting modern bustle, serene gardens giving way to neon lights. Osaka, you definitely kept us on our toes! Pieter would have loved the blend of history and modern culture, but I think he would have been overwhelmed by the crowds. I tried to capture as many photos as I could, knowing he'd be eager to see everything.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi. It was a traditional Japanese breakfast, and while I usually prefer something a little less adventurous in the mornings, I decided to fully embrace the experience. It was a great start to a busy day, fueling us up for our Osaka adventure.

First on the agenda was the majestic Osaka Castle. As we approached, the sheer scale of the castle was breathtaking. It’s hard to believe it was originally built in 1583! The castle has been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1931, after enduring fires and war. The history is palpable, and I could almost feel the echoes of samurai and emperors as we walked through the grounds. The castle is surrounded by a vast park, a green oasis amidst the urban sprawl. It was lovely to see locals jogging and cycling, enjoying the beautiful spring weather. The cherry blossoms were still clinging to the branches, adding a delicate touch of pink to the already stunning scenery.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
Inside the castle keep, we explored the museum, which offered a fascinating glimpse into Osaka's rich history. There were exhibits on Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Napoleon of Japan who began the castle's construction, and the various battles and sieges it has endured. Climbing to the top of the castle, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city. It was incredible to see how Osaka has grown and changed over the centuries, from its humble beginnings to the bustling metropolis it is today.
Next, we plunged into the vibrant heart of Osaka – Namba. This district is a sensory overload in the best possible way. Neon lights blazed, the aroma of street food filled the air, and the crowds surged through the streets. It was a complete contrast to the tranquility of Osaka Castle, but equally captivating. Namba is known for its nightlife, shopping, and dining, and we were determined to experience it all.

Lunch was at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. This was a delightful experience! The restaurant specializes in fresh meat dishes, and I decided to be adventurous and try the tongue sashimi. It was surprisingly delicious, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and a delicate flavor. The yukke, a Korean-style steak tartare, was also a highlight. It was made with high-quality meat and paired perfectly with a glass of wine.

After lunch, we dived headfirst into the shopping paradise that is Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street. This covered arcade stretches for 580 meters and is home to over 180 stores. From high-end brands like Chanel and Cartier to fast fashion retailers like Uniqlo and H&M, there was something for everyone. I managed to find a few souvenirs for the family, including some adorable trinkets from a 100-yen shop. I even found a beautiful silk scarf that I know my mother will adore. It's always a joy to bring back little pieces of my travels to share with loved ones. I couldn’t resist stopping at Onitsuka Tiger, as I have a soft spot for their sneakers, and picked up a pair of their classic Mexico 66 design. They'll be perfect for my cycling trips back in Delft!

As evening approached, we made our way to Dotonbori, Osaka's most famous entertainment district. This is where Osaka truly comes alive. The neon lights are even brighter, the crowds are even larger, and the energy is palpable. Dotonbori is famous for its street food, and we sampled as much as we could. Takoyaki, those delicious octopus balls, were a must-try. We also indulged in some kushikatsu, deep-fried skewers of meat and vegetables. It was all so delicious and so much fun!

We capped off the day with a Kaiseki dinner at Kikunoi Roan. After the hustle and bustle of Namba and Dotonbori, the serene atmosphere of Kikunoi Roan was a welcome contrast. Kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal, and Kikunoi Roan is renowned for its exquisite cuisine and impeccable service. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

As I savored each course, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had. Osaka is a city of contrasts, where ancient history meets modern bustle, serene gardens give way to neon lights, and traditional cuisine blends with street food. It's a city that stimulates all the senses and leaves you wanting more.
Tomorrow, we head back to Kyoto for our final day. We're planning to visit the Kyoto Railway Museum and Nijo Castle, soaking up a bit more history and culture before our trip comes to an end. I also want to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at AEON MALL KYOTO. I’m already feeling a little sad that our adventure is coming to an end, but I’m also excited to return home and share my experiences with Pieter. I know he’ll be eager to hear all about it and see the photos I’ve taken. Maybe we can even plan a trip back together sometime soon!
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, already anticipating the tales I'd share with Pieter and the memories we'd relive together.
Travel is not reward for working, it's education for living.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore Japan with my friends, to immerse myself in its culture, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. Even though I missed Pieter terribly, I knew he was with me in spirit, cheering me on and sharing in my adventures. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, and to make the most of our final day in this incredible country.
Until tomorrow,
Jessica
