Exploring the Majestic Ausangate Trek in Peru
Day 6: Wandering Through the Sacred Valley: A Day of Ancient Wonders and Culinary Delights
Discover the magic of Peru's Sacred Valley with Jessica and Pieter, exploring ancient sites, savoring local cuisine, and creating unforgettable memories.
Echoes of the Incas in the Sacred Valley
Today was a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors as Pieter and I journeyed through the heart of Peru's Sacred Valley. From exploring ancient ruins to indulging in traditional cuisine, every moment felt like stepping back in time. It's days like these that remind me why we traded our cozy life in Delft for the thrill of the unknown.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Tupana Wasi. Fuelled up with local delicacies, we set off to explore the Sacred Valley. The crisp morning air and the promise of ancient wonders ahead filled us with anticipation. October in the Sacred Valley is a transitional month, with mild temperatures during the day and cooler nights. Perfect for exploring! The occasional rain shower adds a touch of magic to the landscape.
Our first stop was Rumicolca, an ancient gateway that once controlled access to the Inca Empire. Standing there, I couldn't help but imagine the countless travelers who passed through this very spot centuries ago. Pieter, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the intricate stonework and the stories etched into every wall. The sheer scale of the structure was awe-inspiring, a testament to the ingenuity and power of the Inca civilization. It's amazing to think this aqueduct was built to bring water to Pikillaqta.

The Sacred Valley whispers stories of a vibrant past, inviting us to connect with the ancient souls who once walked this land.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for a culinary adventure at Hacienda Huayoccari. This hidden gem, tucked away in a lush estate, offered a glimpse into Peruvian heritage and hospitality. The Hacienda itself dates back to the 17th century. From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Sipping on a Pisco Sour, we wandered through the Hacienda's private museum, filled with pre-Columbian, Incan, and colonial artifacts. The collection of 'Qeros,' traditional drinking vessels, was particularly impressive.
Lunch at Hacienda Huayoccari was an experience in itself. We dined on the terrace, surrounded by stunning views of the Sacred Valley and the Andes mountains. The silence and peace of this little Eden seeped into our bones. The food was hearty, traditional, and rustic, with all ingredients sourced locally. We started with causa, a traditional dish served with smoked trout and quinoa croquettes. For the main course, Pieter chose the steamed trout in caper butter sauce, while I opted for the sirloin steak with pisco and mushroom quinotto. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a true celebration of Andean cuisine.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Cusco Plaza Saphi, but not before stopping at Full House Peruvian cuisine & craft beer for dinner. The restaurant had a lively vibe, with a welcoming atmosphere and panoramic river views. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I decided on the Trio of Causa and Pieter had the trout ceviche.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Mythology, a popular bar in Cusco. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to enjoy the vibrant nightlife. The $25,000 sound system kept everyone dancing until the early hours. We enjoyed a few local craft beers, soaking in the lively atmosphere before heading back to our hotel.

Reflecting on our day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of the Sacred Valley. Every sight, sound, and flavor has woven itself into the tapestry of our journey. Tomorrow, we're off to Laguna Roja and Farallones de Tecsecocha. I'm excited to see what adventures await us as we continue our exploration of this breathtaking country. I need to remember to stop at the Trekking Store to get a portable phone charger, travel adapter, and binoculars. It's experiences like these that make me realize how much I value sustainable travel and connecting with local cultures. Until tomorrow!
