Steaming Waters and Mountain Highs
Today in Zao Onsen was a delightful blend of traditional relaxation and scenic exploration. It's amazing how immersing oneself in local customs and natural beauty can truly rejuvenate the spirit. From the therapeutic waters of a classic bathhouse to the stunning vistas atop a mountain peak, Zao Onsen continues to enchant.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at the Omiya Ryokan, a delightful start that fueled us up for the day's adventures [from hotel]. I always appreciate the thoughtful presentation and the subtle, yet satisfying flavors of a Japanese breakfast. It’s a gentle way to wake up the senses and prepare for a day of exploration.

First on our itinerary was the Zao Onsen Shitayu Public Bathhouse. I've always found something profoundly calming about the ritual of public bathing in Japan. It's a communal experience, a shared moment of tranquility that transcends words. The Zao Onsen Shitayu Public Bathhouse is a quaint, traditional building that exudes a sense of history and local charm. As Pieter and I stepped inside, we were enveloped in the warm, mineral-rich aroma of the hot spring water.

The bathhouse itself is simple, yet elegant, with separate sections for men and women. The wooden architecture and the soft lighting created a serene atmosphere, inviting us to leave our worries at the door. Slipping into the steaming water, I felt an immediate sense of relaxation. The water, known for its therapeutic properties, soothed my muscles and calmed my mind. It was the perfect way to start the day, a true immersion into Japanese culture and a welcome respite for weary travelers.
The simple act of soaking in hot spring water can wash away not just the grime of travel, but also the accumulated stress of daily life.
After our rejuvenating bath, we set our sights on Jizo Sancho Station. The journey to the station was an adventure in itself. We strolled through the charming streets of Zao Onsen, taking in the sights and sounds of this delightful mountain village. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and the distant sound of mountain streams. We passed by local shops selling traditional crafts and snacks, each one a treasure trove of local culture.

To reach Jizo Sancho Station, we hopped on a cable car, which offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As we ascended, the panorama unfolded before us – rolling hills, verdant forests, and the quaint village of Zao Onsen nestled below. The higher we climbed, the more dramatic the scenery became.
At the summit, Jizo Sancho Station greeted us with its panoramic vistas. The air was noticeably cooler, a refreshing change from the warmth of the bathhouse. We spent a good amount of time simply taking in the view. The vast expanse of the Yamagata region stretched out before us, a tapestry of green and blue under the vast summer sky. It was a moment of pure awe, a reminder of the incredible beauty that our planet holds.
For lunch, we ventured to Zaonoie, a local restaurant known for its hearty, traditional fare. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with wooden tables and a cozy atmosphere. Pieter and I shared a delicious meal of local specialties, savoring the flavors of Yamagata. It was the perfect way to refuel after our mountain adventure, a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine that warmed us from the inside out.

In the late afternoon, we decided to do a bit of shopping at the Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. While bus terminals might not typically be tourist destinations, this one offered a surprising array of local products and souvenirs. We picked up some local crafts and delicacies, little mementos to remind us of our time in Zao Onsen. I even found a beautiful hand-painted fan that I know my sister, Anouk, will adore.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Izakaya Kiwa for dinner. This lively spot came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and drinks on offer. Pieter and I sampled a variety of small plates, from grilled meats to fresh seafood, each dish bursting with flavor. The sake was particularly good, a smooth, warming drink that complemented the meal perfectly.

Soaking in a traditional bathhouse, gazing at panoramic views from a mountain summit, savoring local cuisine – these are the moments that make travel so rewarding. They connect us to the local culture, allow us to appreciate the beauty of our planet, and create lasting memories.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Zao's scenic beauty by visiting the Zao Sky Cable Uwanodai Station and the Ubagami. I'm particularly excited about the cable car ride, as I've heard it offers even more stunning views of the surrounding landscape. And of course, we'll be sure to indulge in more of the local cuisine, with lunch at Kasheru and dinner at Touen. We might even end the day with a drink at SANRINA from ZAO BREWERY.
As I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with gratitude for this incredible journey. Zao Onsen has truly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also grateful I remembered to buy sunscreen at the bus terminal, given I had forgotten it when packing the essentials.
