Solo Adventure to Þingvellir: Embracing Iceland's Natural Wonders
Day 6: Chasing Waterfalls and Ancient Echoes in Þingvellir
Explore Þingvellir's hidden gems: Hrauntún's history, Flekaskilin's beauty, and Hlauptungufoss's majesty on a solo Icelandic adventure.
Whispers of the Past, Rhythms of the Present
Þingvellir has continued to surprise me with its blend of natural beauty and historical resonance. Today was all about venturing deeper into the park, exploring lesser-known spots, and connecting with the Icelandic landscape on a more intimate level. It’s amazing how much history and nature can intertwine in one place, creating an experience that feeds both the mind and the soul.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Thingvellir Tourist Information Centre Café. Fuelled up with some traditional Icelandic fare, I set off to explore Hrauntún, an abandoned farm that promised a glimpse into Iceland's past.
Explore the breathtaking landscapes of Hrauntún, Iceland's unique tourist attraction showcasing volcanic beauty and serene nature.
The hike to Hrauntún was an easy, level walk across a lava field. The landscape was dotted with birch, willow, and bilberry shrubs, their leaves creating a tapestry of greens and browns. I kept an eye out for birds, hoping to spot a Golden Plover or a Redwing, but they remained elusive today. Arriving at Hrauntún, I found the remains of a smallholding established in 1830. It was humbling to think of the three generations of the Jónsson family who lived and worked this land until 1930. Though the turf buildings had mostly disappeared, I could still make out the old hayfield, a testament to their hard work. It's a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by early Icelanders, who often struggled with poor hayfields despite having good grazing land.
“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”
Leaving Hrauntún, I made my way to Flekaskilin, drawn by its reputation as a natural haven within Þingvellir.
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Flekaskilin in Thingvellir, where nature and history converge in an unforgettable Icelandic adventure.
The area is known for its diverse terrains, including lush green fields, rugged cliffs, and crystal-clear lakes. As I wandered through, I was struck by the dramatic rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. It’s a powerful visual reminder of the earth's dynamic forces at play. The park is steeped in history, having been the site of Iceland's first parliament, Althing, in 930 AD, adding a layer of cultural significance to the visit. I took advantage of the numerous hiking trails, each offering different views of the stunning landscape. Birdwatchers would appreciate the variety of avian species inhabiting the area. The tranquil environment was perfect for soaking in Iceland's natural beauty, a chance to connect with the country's heritage.
Next on my list was Hlauptungufoss, a waterfall I had read about but hadn't fully appreciated until seeing it in person.
Explore the enchanting beauty of Hlauptungufoss, a stunning Icelandic waterfall offering unforgettable experiences in the heart of nature.
The hike to the waterfall was about 5 kilometers from the park entrance, and the trail led south from the Visitor Center. The sound of rushing water grew louder as I approached, creating a soothing symphony. The waterfall itself was stunning, with cascading waters plunging dramatically over rocky cliffs. The surrounding landscape was lush and rugged, making it a perfect spot for photography. I spent some time simply sitting by the falls, letting the mist cool my face and listening to the water, a perfect moment of solitude and connection with nature.
For lunch, I stopped at Þrastalundur, a restaurant known for its picturesque riverside setting.

I enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Icelandic cuisine, savoring the flavors while taking in the beautiful views of the river Sogið. The restaurant is cozy, with a warm atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was a perfect break in the middle of a day filled with hiking and exploration.
As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at Restaurant Varma in Hveragerði.

The restaurant is known for its Icelandic cuisine, slow-cooked in the hot springs. It was a unique culinary experience, and I enjoyed trying dishes that were prepared using geothermal energy.
Finally, to cap off the day, I decided to visit Ölverk Pizza & Brewery.

I sampled some of their craft beers and enjoyed a wood-fired pizza. The brewery uses geothermal energy in its brewing process, which I found fascinating. It was a lively and welcoming place, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals.
The weather today in Þingvellir was typical for May, with average temperatures between 4°C and 10°C. There was some light rain, but it didn't dampen my spirits. I was glad I had packed layers and a waterproof jacket, as the weather can change quickly in Iceland.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the incredible diversity of Þingvellir National Park. From the historical remnants of Hrauntún to the geological wonders of Flekaskilin and the natural beauty of Hlauptungufoss, there is something for everyone to discover here. The park's blend of history, nature, and culture makes it a truly special place, and I am grateful for the opportunity to explore it at my own pace.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River and the Hveradalir Geothermal Area [Hveradalir Geothermal Area]. I'm excited to soak in the warm waters of the thermal river and witness the geothermal activity up close. I will also visit Vinaskógur and stop by the Thingvellir National Park Visitor Center before heading back to Reykjavik. It’s hard to believe this adventure is almost over.
I find myself thinking of Pieter and how much he would have enjoyed hiking the trails with me and discovering the hidden gems of Þingvellir. Perhaps we can plan a trip together next year, and I can share all these experiences with him firsthand. For now, I'll continue to soak in the beauty and solitude of this incredible place, carrying its memories back home to Delft.
