Embracing Iceland's Heartland

After months of planning, countless hours spent researching, and a slightly stressful flight from Amsterdam, I finally arrived in Iceland! Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was calling my name, promising a blend of geological marvels and rich history. I couldn't wait to immerse myself in this unique landscape, reflect on its significance, and share my experiences with all of you.

The journey here was smooth, a direct flight from Amsterdam to Reykjavik, followed by a scenic bus ride to the park. The landscape transformed dramatically as we drove, from the charming streets of Reykjavik to the rugged, open expanse of Þingvellir. The air was crisp and clean, carrying a hint of the Icelandic wilderness, a welcome change from the bustling city life I've grown accustomed to in Delft. The average temperature in May here ranges from 4°C to 10°C (39°F to 50°F) , so I was well-prepared with my layers of clothing. I made sure to pack my hiking boots, waterproof jacket, and camera, ready to capture every moment of this adventure.

My first stop was the Þingvellir National Park Visitor Center. Located near the viewing platform, it offered a wealth of information about the park's history, geology, and ecology. The interactive exhibition, Heart of Iceland, was particularly fascinating, providing an engaging way to learn about the park's significance. I spent a good hour exploring the exhibits, digging up digital artifacts and learning how the old Icelandic council used to operate. It's amazing how this park is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet.

Þingvellir is more than just a national park; it's a living testament to Iceland's past and a vibrant example of its natural wonders.

After soaking in the history at the Visitor Center, I ventured out to explore the park itself. My first destination was the Þingvellir Aurora Viewpoint. Even though the Northern Lights are typically a winter phenomenon , I was eager to see the panoramic views the viewpoint offered. The landscape was breathtaking, a vast expanse of rugged cliffs, shimmering lakes, and vibrant greenery. I could see the Almannagjá gorge, a clear testament to the continental drift. The air was still and the silence was broken only by the occasional call of a bird. I took some photos, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of the place.

For breakfast, I stopped by the Thingvellir Tourist Information Centre Café. Located conveniently in the park, it was the perfect spot to grab a quick bite and plan my day. I opted for a traditional Icelandic pastry and a cup of strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. The café is run by Icewear, offering a selection of souvenirs and refreshments. It’s fascinating to know that Icewear opened a new store here, offering souvenirs connected to the area's unique history and geography.

Lunch was at Lindin, a restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and beautiful views. Tucked away in Laugarvatn, it was a bit of a drive, but well worth it. I decided to try the Arctic char, a local delicacy, and it was absolutely divine. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. It was a perfect break in the middle of my exploration.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at Icewear Þingvellir. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for Pieter and myself, something to remember this incredible trip by. I found a beautiful hand-knitted wool sweater and a small carving of an Icelandic horse. The store had a wide selection of outdoor clothing and equipment, perfect for anyone planning to explore Iceland's landscapes.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at SILFRA RESTAURANT & BAR for dinner. This restaurant is part of the ION Adventure Hotel, known for its sustainable practices and stunning location. The chefs emphasize “slow food”, using fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant's name is derived from the Silfra rift in Lake Þingvellir. I enjoyed a delicious meal of glazed lamb shank with cauliflower, reflecting on the day's adventures.

Þingvellir has a rich history. In 930 AD, the Alþingi, the world's first parliament, was established here. It's where Icelanders gathered to make laws and settle disputes. The park is also situated on Þingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake. The Öxará River runs through the park, creating the stunning Öxaráfoss waterfall.

As I settled into my campsite for the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. The weather in Þingvellir in May is mild, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 10°C (39°F to 50°F). The days are long, with nearly 20 hours of daylight, allowing ample time for exploration. I was well-prepared with my layered clothing and waterproof gear, ready for whatever the Icelandic weather might bring.

I did realize, however, that I had forgotten a couple of essentials: a portable water filter and an extra memory card for my camera. Note to self: always double-check the packing list! But these minor setbacks couldn't dampen my spirits. I was in Iceland, surrounded by incredible natural beauty and steeped in history. I drifted off to sleep, excited for what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Hakið, Silfra, and Drekkingarhylur. I might even check out Ölverk Pizza & Brewery for a local experience.

The Northern Lights may not be visible in May, but Þingvellir Aurora Viewpoint is still worth a visit for its panoramic views. The park is accessible throughout the night, making it a great spot for stargazing. I'm also excited about the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights later in the trip, perhaps in another location.

This solo journey is not just about seeing the sights; it's about connecting with nature, understanding history, and reflecting on the importance of sustainability. I hope my experiences inspire you to explore the world responsibly and appreciate the beauty of our planet. Stay tuned for more updates from Þingvellir!

Tomorrow promises more exploration, with plans to visit Hakið, Silfra, and Drekkingarhylur. And who knows, maybe I'll even catch a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights if I'm lucky. Until then, goodnight from Iceland!

Þingvellir National Park has truly captured my heart. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience. The park's geological features, historical significance, and serene beauty make it a must-visit destination for any traveler. And as I continue my journey, I'm reminded of the importance of preserving such pristine environments for future generations.
