A Cultural Sojourn in Florence: Art, History, and Tuscan Flavors
Day 5: A Day of Renaissance Echoes: Santa Maria Novella to Casa Buonarroti
Step back in time with Jiří and Lena as they explore Florence's artistic legacy, from basilicas to Michelangelo's home, a day of pure wonder.
Echoes of the Renaissance
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of the Renaissance, tracing the footsteps of artists and exploring the spaces that shaped their genius. Florence, even in January, hums with a vibrant energy that pulls you back in time. It's a city where every stone has a story, and today, Lena and I were determined to listen.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Logò Ristorante. It’s a charming spot, and the reviews I had seen online were spot on. The atmosphere was cozy, and the food was simply delightful – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. We started with some pastries and strong Italian coffee, setting the tone for a day steeped in culture and history. Fuelled up, we set off towards our first destination: the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella.
Explore the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, a stunning Gothic masterpiece in Florence, rich in art, history, and spiritual significance.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella was breathtaking. From the very first glance, the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella in Florence creates an overwhelming sense of awe. The sheer scale of the facade, with its intricate green marble arrangements, immediately commands attention. Designed by Leon Battista Alberti, it’s a stunning blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the soaring nave and the sense of history permeating the air. It’s hard to believe that this basilica has been a center for the Dominicans in Tuscany for centuries. The light filtering through the stained glass windows cast a kaleidoscope of colors across the interior, illuminating the many chapels and artworks within.
We spent a good amount of time admiring the frescoes, especially those in the Filippo Strozzi Chapel. The artistry of Filippino Lippi is remarkable, and the details in the frescoes are astounding. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly fascinated by the architectural elements and the way the light played with the space. We also made sure to see the wooden crucifix by Brunelleschi in the Cappella Gondi, a piece said to be his response to Donatello's work at the Basilica di Santa Croce. It’s incredible to think of the artistic rivalries and dialogues that played out in these very spaces centuries ago.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After soaking in the grandeur of Santa Maria Novella, we made our way to the Museo Nazionale del Bargello.
Discover the artistic heritage of Florence at Museo Nazionale del Bargello, home to masterpieces by Michelangelo and Donatello.
This museum is housed in a formidable fortress-like building that has served as everything from a palace to a prison. Today, it holds one of the most important collections of Renaissance sculpture in Italy. As we walked through the various rooms, we were surrounded by masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, and many other renowned artists.
One of the highlights for me was seeing Donatello's David. It’s a powerful and evocative work, and it’s fascinating to compare it to Michelangelo's David, which we saw earlier in the trip. The Bargello also houses a remarkable collection of arms, armor, and Medici medals, offering a glimpse into the military and political history of Florence. Lena was particularly drawn to the intricate details of the sculptures and the expressions captured in the faces of the figures. The Bargello Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in Renaissance art and history. I was especially impressed by the architecture and decoration of the three floors, which made the visit even more worthwhile.
Our final stop of the day was Casa Buonarroti, the house museum dedicated to Michelangelo.
Explore the artistic heritage of Michelangelo at Casa Buonarroti, a captivating museum in Florence showcasing Renaissance masterpieces.
This was a more intimate and personal experience compared to the grand scale of the Uffizi or the Accademia. Casa Buonarroti offers a unique glimpse into the life and work of Michelangelo, showcasing his drawings, sketches, and early sculptures. It felt like stepping into the home of a genius, surrounded by the tools and creations that shaped his legacy.
The museum is divided into two floors, with the first floor housing the family collection and works by artists inspired by Michelangelo. The second floor is where the real treasures lie: Michelangelo's early sculptures, such as the Madonna della Scala and the Battle of the Centaurs. These works reveal the remarkable talent and anatomical knowledge that Michelangelo possessed even in his youth. It was fascinating to see the evolution of his style and the seeds of the masterpieces that would later define his career.
Casa Buonarroti also provided insight into Michelangelo's family life and his relationship with his nephew, Leonardo, who preserved many of his works. The museum has a personal, quiet atmosphere, making it an intimate experience. Lena and I wandered through the rooms, marveling at the drawings and sketches, trying to imagine Michelangelo at work in this very space. It was a fitting end to a day dedicated to exploring the artistic heritage of Florence.
For lunch, we stopped at Osteria dell'Enoteca, a delightful spot recommended for its authentic Tuscan cuisine.

In the evening, we had dinner at Club Culinario Toscano da Osvaldo, a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan ambiance.

From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The waiter, Alex, was exceptional, providing us with great recommendations and engaging in delightful conversation. We started with the artichoke salad, which was a standout dish. For our main courses, I chose the rabbit, while Lena opted for another pasta dish. The flavors were authentic and comforting, and the service was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience.
After dinner, we decided to unwind at Bitter Bar, a speakeasy-style establishment known for its innovative cocktails.

The bar had a sophisticated and intriguing vibe, reminiscent of the 1920s. The mixologists were true artists, crafting unique and flavorful drinks. I tried the Rosmarino Old Fashioned, while Lena went for the Limoncello Basil Smash. Both were expertly prepared and utterly delicious. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of art, history, and Tuscan flavors.
As we walked back to Palazzo Graziani, the city was quiet and peaceful.

The day had been a whirlwind of art, history, and culinary delights. I felt a deep sense of connection to the city and its rich cultural heritage. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this enchanting city. I am also hoping to find a Galeria to find some nice souvenirs.
Before drifting off to sleep, I reflected on the day. It’s days like these that make travel so rewarding – the chance to immerse oneself in a different culture, to learn about the past, and to connect with the present. Florence has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you wanting more. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, and I can’t wait to see what other treasures this city holds.
