A Day of Spiritual Exploration

Today marked the culmination of our journey through the Moulay Idriss Region, and what a profound experience it has been. Immersing ourselves in the local culture and history has been incredibly enriching, and today was no exception. Lena and I set out to explore the heart of this sacred town, eager to absorb its unique atmosphere and uncover its hidden gems.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Grillade Albanna. The aromas of freshly baked bread and traditional Moroccan spices filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. I opted for kefta, served with grilled tomatoes and spices, while Lena enjoyed a selection of local pastries. Fuelled and ready, we ventured into the town, ready to explore its spiritual and historical landmarks.

Our first stop was Dar Moulay Idriss. The architecture was simply breathtaking, with intricate tile work and ornate stucco detailing at every turn. The building stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural richness of Morocco, and it was named after Moulay Idriss, who played a pivotal role in spreading Islam in Morocco. The atmosphere was imbued with a sense of tranquility, inviting us to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounded us. We wandered through the beautifully designed rooms, each telling a story of the past and reflecting the artistry of Moroccan artisans.

The essence of travel is not just seeing new places, but experiencing them, feeling them, and letting them change you.

Next, we made our way to Kasabah Senhaji. This beautifully designed hotel embodies Moroccan hospitality, featuring traditional architecture. As we strolled through the narrow, winding streets, we discovered local markets and soaked in the peaceful ambiance of the area. Kasabah Senhaji is ideally located for exploring historical and cultural landmarks, offering a unique blend of relaxation and adventure.

For lunch, we stopped at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق, a local gem recommended by our homestay family. The cafe offered a delightful array of traditional Moroccan dishes. Lena and I shared a tagine, savoring the rich flavors and tender meat. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration. We sat outside, watching the locals go about their day, feeling a sense of connection to the community.

In the late afternoon, we decided to visit Dar Zerhoune for a drink. This guesthouse and restaurant is known for offering the best terrace in Moulay Idriss, with panoramic views of Volubilis, the Zerhoune mountain range, and Moulay Idriss itself. As we sipped on refreshing mint tea, we savored the gorgeous sunset, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange and pink. The view was simply mesmerizing, providing a perfect moment of reflection on our journey.

Before dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in its vibrant atmosphere. I took the chance to capture some photos of the emerald-green, round minaret with white Kufic-scripted Quranic verses of the Al-Santisi Mosque. The unique architecture stood out against the backdrop of the town, making it a perfect subject for my lens. We found a local artisan selling handmade crafts and couldn't resist purchasing a few souvenirs to remind us of our time here.

For our final dinner in Moulay Idriss, we chose Volubilis, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere. We enjoyed a delicious meal of couscous and grilled meats, reminiscing about our adventures over the past eleven days. The service was excellent, and the staff made us feel incredibly welcome.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had during our time in the Moulay Idriss Region. From exploring ancient ruins to connecting with the local community, this trip has been nothing short of transformative. The warmth and hospitality of the people here have touched our hearts, and we leave with a deep appreciation for the rich culture and history of Morocco.

While there are no specific festivals taking place today, I learned that the town is well-known locally as one of the country's most important pilgrimage sites for its holy festival in the second week of August. I also learned that architect Hajj Idris Al-Santisi constructed the round minaret in 1939 to set apart Moulay Idriss from other mosques in the country.

As this is the last day of our trip, tomorrow we will be heading back to Munich, filled with memories and stories to share. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this beautiful region with Lena, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey.

The weather today was warm, with clear skies, making it perfect for exploring the town. The temperature averaged around 27°C, which was quite comfortable.

The trip may be over, but the memories will last a lifetime. I am grateful for the experiences, the people we met, and the lessons we learned. Until next time, safe travels!
