Whispers of the Past

Today, Lena and I embarked on a journey that felt like stepping through a portal into another time. It wasn't just about seeing old stones; it was about feeling the pulse of civilizations long gone and connecting with the deep spiritual roots of this land. The experiences we shared today have certainly deepened my appreciation for the beauty and complexity of Moroccan history.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق [i]. Sipping on strong coffee and enjoying freshly baked bread, we fueled up for a day of exploration. The cafe buzzed with locals, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what the day held. It's moments like these, surrounded by the everyday life of a place, that truly make a trip memorable.

Our first stop was the Site Archéologique de Volubilis, an ancient Roman city that once thrived in this fertile region [i]. As we approached, the sprawling ruins unfolded before us, set against a backdrop of rolling hills. The August sun was already beating down, but a gentle breeze made the heat bearable. I made a mental note to buy a hat; I seemed to have forgotten it amongst all the excitement of packing. We wandered through the remains of grand villas, marveling at the intricate mosaics that still adorned the floors. Lena, ever the artist, was particularly captivated by the details in the mosaics, snapping photos from every angle. I tried my hand at capturing the vastness of the site, attempting to frame the Arch of Caracalla against the clear blue sky.

The sheer scale of Volubilis was impressive. It was easy to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago, a bustling hub of commerce and culture. The Romans chose this location for its fertile lands, cultivating grains and olives. It struck me how much history was layered here, from the Berber tribes who first inhabited the area to the Roman colonists and later, the influence of Islam. Each civilization left its mark, creating a rich tapestry of human experience.

To walk through Volubilis is to walk through the pages of history, each stone whispering tales of emperors, traders, and everyday lives.

After immersing ourselves in Roman history, we drove to the nearby town of Moulay Idriss, a sacred city named after the founder of the Idrisid dynasty. The contrast between the ancient ruins and the vibrant life of Moulay Idriss was striking. As we approached the town, the white-washed buildings clinging to the hillside created a stunning vista. Moulay Idriss is considered one of the holiest cities in Morocco, and until fairly recently, it was closed to non-Muslims.

We made our way to the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er, the final resting place of the city's namesake. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum, we stood outside, taking in the atmosphere of reverence and respect. The air was filled with the sounds of prayer and the murmur of pilgrims who had come to pay their respects. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the deep spiritual significance of this place.

For lunch, we stopped at the Restaurant Volubilis, which was conveniently located near the archeological site. The food was simple and satisfying, providing a welcome respite from the heat. After lunch, we decided to treat ourselves at La Baraka. This restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a chance to sample more authentic Moroccan cuisine. Lena opted for a tagine, while I chose the couscous, and we shared a pot of traditional mint tea. The flavors were incredible, a testament to the skill and passion of the local chefs. The staff was very kind, happily answering our questions about the dishes and the local culture.

As the afternoon wore on, we sought refuge from the heat at Dar Zerhoune, a local bar known for its refreshing drinks and stunning views. Sitting on the rooftop terrace, sipping on a cool beverage, we gazed out over the town and the surrounding countryside. The panoramic view was breathtaking, encompassing the rolling hills, the ancient ruins of Volubilis, and the white-washed buildings of Moulay Idriss. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures.

In the evening, we returned to La Baraka for dinner, eager to relive the culinary delights we had experienced at lunch. This time, I tried the lamb tagine, a local favorite, and Lena savored a flavorful stew. As we ate, we chatted with other travelers, sharing stories and tips about our respective journeys. There's something special about connecting with fellow travelers, a sense of camaraderie that transcends borders and cultures. The atmosphere was cozy, and the service was attentive, making it a perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, we decided to take a stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere of Moulay Idriss. The streets were bustling with activity, as locals went about their evening routines. We passed by artisan shops, their wares spilling out onto the sidewalks, and the air was filled with the aroma of spices and freshly baked bread. It was a sensory feast, a reminder of the vibrant culture that thrives in this ancient city.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by a local bakery, drawn in by the smell of warm bread. We bought a loaf of traditional Moroccan bread, still warm from the oven, and savored it as we walked. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day, a simple pleasure that captured the essence of our experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa and the Bab Rmila Natural Park [i]. I'm particularly excited about the natural park, as I've heard it offers stunning views and a chance to connect with the local flora and fauna.

As I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared today. Volubilis and Moulay Idriss are places that stay with you, their ancient stones and sacred spaces leaving an indelible mark on your soul. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the past, the present, and the people who call these places home.

I'm also grateful that I didn't forget to pack my camera, which I initially thought I had when we had already left! I guess that Czech practicality is something I can't shake off, even when I'm supposed to be on vacation.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in the connections we forge with the past, the present, and the people who call these places home.

I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings!
