Gion's Timeless Charm

Today, I found myself completely captivated by the enchanting allure of Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. It was a day of wandering through history, indulging in culinary delights, and soaking in the unique atmosphere that makes this area so special. As I reflect on my experiences, I'm eager to share the moments that made this day truly unforgettable.

My day began, as most days here have, with a hearty breakfast at The Chapter Kyoto, a Tribute Portfolio™ Hotel. The onsite restaurant offers a wonderful selection, fueling me up for a day of exploration. I made sure to grab an extra coffee, knowing I'd be doing a lot of walking.

With a clear plan to immerse myself in the heart of Gion, I set out towards its historic streets. The air was crisp, carrying the subtle scent of cherry blossoms, a gentle reminder of the season's fleeting beauty. The journey itself was straightforward, and before I knew it, I was standing at the edge of Gion, ready to step back in time.

My first stop was Hanamikoji Street, the main thoroughfare of Gion. Even though I knew that Gion is split into two main areas: Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi, I was still amazed by the fact that Hanamikoji Street is located in Gion Kobu, the largest of the two. The street was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn to its traditional wooden machiya houses. These narrow-fronted buildings, once merchant homes, now house restaurants and teahouses, each with its own unique charm. I strolled along, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this living museum.

It's not just about seeing; it's about feeling the history beneath your feet and the traditions that echo through the centuries.

I paused at the Ichiriki Chaya, a teahouse with vermilion walls that has stood for over three centuries. While access is by invitation only, its presence is a reminder of Gion's exclusive and secretive world. I imagined the political figures and powerful businessmen who had passed through its doors, their stories adding to the mystique of the area.

Continuing my walk, I explored the side alleys branching off Hanamikoji Street. These quieter lanes offered a more intimate glimpse into Gion life. I passed by small shops selling traditional crafts and sweets, each a testament to the enduring traditions of Kyoto. I couldn't resist popping into one to buy some matcha flavored candies, a perfect little treat to keep me going.

As lunchtime approached, I made my way to Nishikawa, a renowned kaiseki restaurant tucked away in a quiet alley. Finding it was a bit of an adventure, but the effort was well worth it. The restaurant is located near Yasaka Shrine, and after a seven minute walk from the Higashiyama-Yasui bus stop, I found myself on Kodaiji-minamimon-dori. After turning left on Shimogawara-dori and walking for 50 meters, I found the restaurant hidden away in a back alley.

The moment I stepped inside Gion Nishikawa, I knew I was in for a special experience. The ambiance was serene, with minimalist decor and soft lighting. I opted for the Kaiseki Lunch, eager to experience Nishikawa's culinary world. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing seasonal ingredients and meticulous preparation. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful grilled fish, every bite was a delight.

After my exquisite lunch, I decided to delve deeper into Gion's cultural offerings with a visit to Gion Corner. It was easy to reach the performance art show from Nishikawa, since both are located near Yasaka Shrine. Located in Yasaka Hall, Gion Corner is a theater where you can experience a variety of traditional Japanese performing arts, including geiko dances. The show is approximately one hour long and includes chanoyu (the art of preparing tea), koto music, ikebana flower arrangement, bugaku dance, kyogen comedy, and Kyomai dance.

The performance was a captivating introduction to Kyoto's artistic heritage. The Kyomai dance, performed by maiko, was particularly enchanting, their graceful movements and beautiful kimonos telling stories of old Japan. The tea ceremony was a study in precision and mindfulness, while the Bunraku puppet theater offered a glimpse into a world of dramatic storytelling. Although the show is targeted towards foreigners, it was a great way to experience the local culture.

Leaving Gion Corner, I felt a deeper appreciation for the artistry and dedication that goes into these traditional art forms. I decided to take a leisurely stroll back through Hanamikoji Street, hoping to catch a glimpse of geiko or maiko on their way to evening appointments. While I didn't spot any, the atmosphere of the street was magical, the lanterns casting a warm glow on the wooden buildings.

Before dinner, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C. This department store is located in the Kawara-machi area of the city, and features everything from fashions and food to an art gallery. I picked up a few souvenirs for Lena and myself, a small reminder of my time in Kyoto. I made sure to get a tax refund, since I'm staying in Japan for less than 6 months.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION for dinner. I was looking forward to comparing this steakhouse to the one in Kobe. The restaurant is known for serving Kobe beef from descendants of the Tajima cattle lineage, raised in the same pristine environment as in the past. The restaurant is a fine dining establishment with modern style, and has a classy interior.

I opted for a tasting menu featuring Kobe sirloin, eager to savor the melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich flavor that this beef is known for. The meal included soup, salad, and an array of vegetables, each prepared with meticulous attention to detail. The chef grilled the beef to perfection right in front of me, ensuring a truly memorable dining experience. Every element, from the top-tier beef to the meticulously selected ingredients sourced from Kyoto, was grilled to perfection.

The combination between sweet ice cream and the fresh berries worked very well and made us couldn't stop eating. The point is, I got more in Mouriya Gion. More food, more delicacy, more service and also more pricey.

As I walked back to The Chapter Kyoto, I reflected on the day's experiences. Gion had truly captured my heart with its timeless charm and cultural richness. It was a day of discovery, indulgence, and a deeper connection to the traditions of Kyoto. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this unique district and share its stories with you all.

Tomorrow marks my last day in Kyoto, and I plan to make the most of it with a visit to the Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto Tower, and Nishiki Market. I'm also planning on ending my trip at Bar Fishbowl, where I can enjoy a drink before heading back home. I am eager to see what my last day in Kyoto has in store.
