Kyoto's Grand Finale

As my eleven-day solo adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken. From serene temples to bustling markets, this city has captivated me with its blend of tradition and modernity. Today, I set out to explore a few final gems before bidding farewell to this enchanting place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Chapter Kyoto, a Tribute Portfolio™ Hotel, the onsite restaurant offering a delightful start to the day. Fuelled up and ready to go, I made my way to the Kyoto Railway Museum.

A Journey Through Railway History

The Kyoto Railway Museum is an absolute treat for anyone interested in trains, whether you're a hardcore enthusiast or just casually curious. The museum showcases an impressive collection of locomotives and rolling stock, from vintage steam engines to the sleek, modern Shinkansen bullet trains. I was particularly excited to see the 500 Series Shinkansen, its streamlined design still looking futuristic even in retirement.

Wandering through the exhibits, I learned about the evolution of Japan's railway network, from its humble beginnings to its current status as one of the most efficient and advanced systems in the world. The interactive displays and meticulously preserved trains offered a hands-on experience that brought the history to life. I even got a chance to climb aboard some of the trains, imagining what it must have been like to travel across the country in a bygone era. It was easy to see why the museum is a hit with both kids and adults alike.

Kyoto Tower: A Bird's-Eye View

After immersing myself in railway history, I headed to Nidec Kyoto Tower, the city's tallest structure. Rising 131 meters above the ground, the tower offers panoramic views of Kyoto and beyond. As someone who enjoys photography, I was eager to capture the cityscape from this unique vantage point.

The observation deck, located 100 meters above ground, provided a breathtaking 360-degree view of Kyoto. From up there, I could see the sprawling cityscape, dotted with ancient temples, traditional houses, and modern buildings. The surrounding mountains framed the city, creating a picturesque backdrop. I even managed to spot some of the landmarks I had visited during my trip, like Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine. On a clear day, they say you can even see as far as Osaka, but today, the haze limited the view to Kyoto's immediate surroundings.

The tower itself is an interesting piece of architecture. Completed in 1964, it was designed to resemble a Japanese candle, a fitting symbol for a city known for its cultural heritage. It stands atop a commercial building that houses a hotel, restaurants, and souvenir shops, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a city is to see it from above, gaining a new perspective on its layout, landmarks, and overall beauty.

Nishiki Market: A Culinary Adventure

With my appetite calling, I ventured to Nishiki Market, also known as Kyoto's Kitchen. This bustling marketplace is a food lover's paradise, with over a hundred shops and stalls selling everything from fresh seafood and produce to traditional sweets and Kyoto specialties.

The market was a sensory overload in the best possible way. The narrow street was packed with people, and the air was filled with the aromas of grilling fish, simmering sauces, and freshly baked goods. Shopkeepers called out to passersby, offering samples of their wares. I wandered through the stalls, sampling various delicacies and soaking in the lively atmosphere.

I started with some dashimaki tamago, a rolled omelet made with dashi broth and eggs. The omelet was incredibly fluffy and flavorful, with a delicate umami taste that lingered on my tongue. Next, I tried some tai-kushi, grilled sea bream on a skewer. The fish was cooked to perfection, with a crispy skin and tender, flaky flesh. I also sampled some Kyoto pickles, which were surprisingly refreshing and tangy. I couldn't resist trying some of the local sweets, like matcha-flavored mochi and yatsuhashi, a cinnamon-flavored cookie.

For lunch, I decided to try Teppan Tavern Tenamonya, a local favorite known for its teppanyaki dishes. I ordered the okonomiyaki, a savory pancake filled with cabbage, meat, and seafood. The chef cooked the okonomiyaki right in front of me on a hot griddle, expertly flipping and seasoning it. The finished product was a delicious combination of textures and flavors, with a crispy exterior and a soft, savory interior.

A Vegan Dinner at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO

For my final dinner in Kyoto, I wanted to try something different, so I chose AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, a vegan restaurant known for its creative and flavorful dishes. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was curious to see what a vegan take on Japanese cuisine would be like.

The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a relaxed atmosphere. The menu featured a variety of vegan dishes, from traditional Japanese fare to Western-inspired creations. I started with the vegan sushi, which was surprisingly delicious. The rice was perfectly seasoned, and the toppings, made from tofu, vegetables, and seaweed, were bursting with flavor. For my main course, I ordered the vegan ramen, which was rich and satisfying. The broth was made from a blend of vegetable and mushroom stock, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The toppings, including tofu, bamboo shoots, and seaweed, added a variety of textures and flavors to the dish.

A Nightcap at Bar Fishbowl

To cap off my final night, I decided to visit Bar Fishbowl, a quirky spot known for its unique atmosphere and extensive selection of Japanese whiskeys. I'd read about it and was intrigued. Apparently, it's a Western-style bar with over 50 varieties of whiskey, a selection you wouldn't find in many other bars in Japan. The reviews mentioned excellent Japanese whiskeys and craft beers.

The bar was indeed unique. The dimly lit interior featured a large fishbowl behind the counter, filled with colorful fish. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, recommending a few different whiskeys for me to try. I settled on a Yamazaki 12-year-old, which was smooth and complex, with notes of oak, fruit, and spice. It was the perfect way to end my trip, savoring a taste of Japan while reflecting on my experiences.

As I sipped my whiskey, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible journey I had undertaken. Kyoto had exceeded all of my expectations, offering a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty. I had explored ancient temples, strolled through tranquil gardens, and indulged in delicious cuisine. I had connected with locals, learned about their traditions, and gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Munich, filled with memories and inspiration. I'm already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Lena and planning our next adventure together. Until then, sayōnara, Kyoto. You will be missed.
