Solo Exploration of Vietnam's Natural Wonders: Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Day 4: Conquering Caves and Valleys: An Unforgettable Day in Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Embark on an exhilarating journey through Hang Va Cave and the enchanting HaVa Valley, discovering nature's hidden gems in Vietnam.
Into the Heart of Phong Nha
Today was a day of subterranean exploration and valley vistas, a true immersion into the raw beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It was a day that tested my limits, rewarded my curiosity, and left me with a profound appreciation for the wonders hidden beneath and within this Vietnamese landscape. From the depths of Hang Va Cave to the serene expanse of HaVa Valley - Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich, every moment was a testament to the park's captivating allure.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Rooftop Bar. The rooftop setting offered stunning views of the surrounding limestone mountains, a perfect backdrop to fuel up for the day's adventures. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal, taking in the fresh morning air and the anticipation of the explorations to come. It's always a treat to start the day with a view, and this one certainly didn't disappoint. It's funny, I remember Lena once saying I always pick locations with a view. Maybe she's right!
The main event of the day was undoubtedly Hang Va Cave. This cave is known for its unique geological formations, including towering cones found in very few places worldwide. The 2-day Hang Va Expedition is designed for adventure seekers ready to trek through the jungle, navigate underground rivers, and camp in a remote area of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. As I prepared for the trek, I double-checked my gear, making sure my hiking boots were securely laced and my camera was ready to capture the subterranean wonders. I was kicking myself for forgetting mosquito repellent and sunscreen, but I made a mental note to pick some up tomorrow.
The journey to Hang Va was an adventure in itself. The trek involved navigating slippery, rocky terrain and wading through underground streams. The cave's remote location and challenging terrain make it less accessible than other caves in the park, adding to its mystique. The cave is approximately 50 meters away from the exit of the world's largest cave, Hang Son Doong, and it is believed that the two caves are connected hydrologically.
Inside Hang Va, I was immediately struck by the otherworldly beauty of the tower cones. These formations, created by water and time, were truly a sight to behold. I felt like I had stepped onto another planet, a hidden realm of geological marvels. The experience was both humbling and awe-inspiring, a reminder of the power and artistry of nature. I spent hours exploring the cave, marveling at the intricate details and capturing as many photos as possible. The lighting was challenging, but I was determined to do justice to the cave's unique beauty.
Exploring Hang Va Cave is like stepping into another world, a realm of geological wonders hidden beneath the surface.
After the exhilarating caving experience, I made my way to HaVa Valley - Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich. This picturesque valley, nestled along the legendary Ho Chi Minh West Trail, offered a serene contrast to the ruggedness of Hang Va. Towering cliffs intermingle with emerald-green waters, while natural stone formations scatter across the riverbed. It is located 75 kilometers from Phong Nha town, in Chay Lap Village. The valley lies within the breathtaking embrace of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a gateway to the wonders of nature.

I spent the afternoon exploring the valley, taking in the stunning views and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. The emerald-green waters of the river were particularly inviting, and I couldn't resist taking a refreshing dip. I also tried my hand at kayaking, gliding through the calm waters and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The valley is perfect for families and tour groups with children, offering endless opportunities for fun-filled moments in the cool, refreshing waters and an array of engaging activities.
As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Phong Nha town, stopping for dinner at ARTIST'S ZONE. This Vietnamese eatery offered an inviting ambiance and amiable staff. I enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties, savoring the flavors of Vietnamese cuisine and reflecting on the day's adventures. The ARTIST'S ZONE is a fantastic Vietnamese eatery that offers an inviting ambiance and amiable, grinning employees. Their menu boasts delectable chicken salad, spring rolls, and sandwiches. Additionally, patrons can enjoy affordable beer options, including some craft choices. The restroom facilities are well-maintained with pleasant-smelling soap.

After dinner, I decided to unwind at Jungle Boss Pub and Restaurant. This bar is known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. I enjoyed a couple of beers, chatting with fellow travelers and sharing stories of our adventures in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. I learned that Jungle Boss offers several tours in the area, including one to the Ma Da Valley and Elephant Cave. The staff was really kind and helpful. The location was beautiful. They also had the MA Da valley tour which was an excellent experience.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited about the prospect of exploring En Cave and Elephant Cave. En Cave, in particular, has captured my imagination with its stunning beauty and unique ecosystem. Elephant Cave combines the beauty of the cave with the adventure of a zipline. I also plan to visit Lá Store to pick up a few souvenirs for Lena and my friends back home. I'm hoping to find something unique and authentic, a reminder of my time in this incredible place.
As I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of adventure, beauty, and cultural immersion. I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that there are still so many hidden gems waiting to be discovered in this remarkable corner of Vietnam.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to try the Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant sometime during the rest of my stay. I've heard great things about their vegan takes on local cuisine. It's always interesting to see how different cultures adapt traditional dishes to meet modern dietary needs. And Lena would be proud!
