Embracing the Quirkiness of Rural Vietnam: A Day in Phong Nha

Today was all about embracing the unexpected joys of rural Vietnam. From the ticklish sensation of a duck massage to the serene observation of semi-wild animals, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park continues to surprise and delight me. It's a far cry from the brewery back in Munich, but that's precisely why I travel – to experience life in its most vibrant and unfiltered forms.

My day began, as many have here, with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Rooftop Bar. The rooftop setting offered a stunning view of the misty mountains, a perfect backdrop for contemplating the day ahead. Fuelled by a strong Vietnamese coffee and a simple but satisfying breakfast, I felt ready to embrace whatever Phong Nha had in store. I made a mental note to remember to buy mosquito repellent and sunscreen at the next shop, as I had forgotten to pack them.

First on the agenda was The Duck Stop. I’d heard whispers of this place, a somewhat quirky attraction where ducks reign supreme. I must admit, I was intrigued. Arriving at The Duck Stop, I was immediately greeted by a flurry of activity. Ducks, of course, were everywhere – waddling, quacking, and generally living their best duck lives. The owner, a jovial local farmer, welcomed me with open arms and a mischievous grin. He explained the premise: for a small fee, you get to interact with the ducks, feed them, and even experience the infamous duck massage.

I cautiously stepped into the duck enclosure, and immediately, I was surrounded. Dozens of ducks pecked at my feet, their little bills surprisingly insistent. Feeding them was a chaotic joy, the birds jostling for position as I scattered the provided feed. Then came the massage. I sprinkled some feed around my feet, and as the ducks gathered to feast, their beaks created a ticklish, strangely pleasant sensation. It was bizarre, yes, but also utterly charming.

It's the unexpected moments, like a duck massage in rural Vietnam, that make travel so enriching.

After the duck frenzy, the owner offered me a taste of his homemade bánh xèo, a crispy Vietnamese pancake. It was delicious, savory and perfectly complemented by a peanut sauce made right on the farm. As I savored the pancake, I chatted with the owner about his life, his farm, and his ducks. His passion for his animals and his land was evident, and it was inspiring to see someone so dedicated to sustainable living. It reminded me a bit of some of the smaller breweries back home in Czechia, where the connection to the land and the ingredients is so vital.

Leaving The Duck Stop, I felt a sense of lightness and amusement. It was a truly unique experience, a reminder that travel doesn't always have to be about grand monuments and historical sites. Sometimes, it's the simple, quirky moments that leave the most lasting impressions.

Next, I headed to the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure. This was a completely different experience, a chance to observe local wildlife in a more natural setting. The enclosure aims to provide a safe environment for various species, allowing them to roam relatively freely while still being protected.

The November weather was pleasant, with a gentle breeze rustling through the trees. As I walked along the enclosure fence, I spotted several species of primates, including the Ha Tinh langur and the red-shanked douc langur. These creatures, native to the region, are stunningly beautiful, with their vibrant colors and graceful movements. It was a privilege to observe them in a setting that closely resembled their natural habitat.

The enclosure was peaceful, a welcome contrast to the bustling energy of The Duck Stop. I spent a couple of hours simply walking, observing, and reflecting. It struck me how important these conservation efforts are, especially in a world where natural habitats are increasingly threatened. Seeing these animals thriving, even in a semi-wild environment, gave me a sense of hope.

For lunch, I decided to try Bamboo Chopsticks. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and its commitment to sustainability. I ordered the fresh spring rolls and the Phong Nha fried rice. The spring rolls were light and refreshing, packed with herbs and vegetables. The fried rice was flavorful and satisfying, a perfect blend of savory and slightly sweet. I washed it all down with a cold local beer, a perfect complement to the warm afternoon. I was happy to see that they were sourcing local ingredients, supporting the local economy and reducing their environmental impact. It’s always reassuring to find businesses that align with my own values of sustainability and responsible tourism.

After lunch, I did a bit of shopping at Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng. I wanted to pick up some local coffee and perhaps a few souvenirs for Lena and the family. The shop was filled with a variety of local products, from coffee beans to handcrafted textiles. I selected a bag of robusta coffee, known for its strong, bold flavor, and a small, hand-painted bowl depicting a traditional Vietnamese landscape. I also found some interesting looking dried fruits that the shop owner said were harvested locally. I am always looking for new ingredients to try brewing with.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3 for dinner. I was in the mood for some fresh seafood, and this restaurant came highly recommended. The restaurant is located in Nha Trang, which is a bit of a drive from Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. However, I decided to stay in Phong Nha and found another restaurant with a similar name. I ordered grilled squid and some steamed clams. The seafood was incredibly fresh, cooked simply but perfectly, allowing the natural flavors to shine. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the delicious food and the convivial ambiance. It was a fitting end to a day filled with diverse experiences.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate the unexpected turns that travel often takes. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore more of Phong Nha Ke Bang. I plan to visit the actual Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park itself, and perhaps enjoy a cold beer at Pub with cold beer afterwards.

It's these moments of connection, with nature, with animals, and with the local people, that make travel so rewarding. It’s a reminder that life is full of surprises, and that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones you never planned.
