Beneath the Surface: Exploring Phong Nha's Subterranean Wonders
Today was a day of exploration, both above and below ground, as I ventured into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. With its promise of stunning caves and authentic Vietnamese experiences, I was eager to immerse myself in the region's natural beauty and local culture. The weather in November is a bit rainy, but the temperatures are mild, so I was prepared for a great day.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant. I opted for a traditional *pho* to fuel my adventures. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect start to the day.

Phong Nha Cave: A Journey into the Mountain's Mouth
My first stop was the iconic Phong Nha Cave. The journey to the cave itself was an experience. I boarded a small wooden boat that glided along the serene Son River, surrounded by the striking karst mountains and lush greenery. As we approached the cave entrance, I felt a sense of anticipation, wondering what wonders lay hidden within.

Inside, the cave was a spectacle of nature's artistry. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like the teeth of a giant monster, as some have described it, while stalagmites rose from the ground, creating a surreal landscape. The boat took us deeper into the cave, revealing hidden chambers and shimmering rock formations. The play of light and shadow accentuated the cave's mystical atmosphere. Though only a portion of the cave is open to tourists, it was more than enough to leave me in awe.

Tien Son Cave: A Fairyland Above
After emerging from Phong Nha Cave, I made my way to Tien Son Cave, also known as the Dry Cave. Unlike its neighbor, Tien Son requires a climb – 583 steps to be exact. The trek was worth it, as the views from the top were breathtaking, overlooking the stunning Phong Nha mountains and forests.

Tien Son Cave is a different world altogether. It's a stalactite castle with thousands of colorful stalactites and stalagmite columns. The cave has a mystical atmosphere, with some formations resembling heavenly palaces. I explored about 400 meters into the cave, marveling at the unique shapes and colors of the rock formations. When I tapped on some of the formations, they echoed with sounds like gongs and drums, adding to the cave's magical charm. It was a truly unforgettable experience, a testament to the power and beauty of nature.
A Taste of Local Flavors
After a morning of cave exploration, I was ready for lunch. I headed to PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT (NHÀ HÀNG GIA ĐÌNH VIỆT NAM), a local eatery known for its delicious food and friendly staff. I decided to try their vegetarian options, opting for aubergine and tofu with rice. The homemade peanut sauce was a standout, adding a rich and savory flavor to the dish. The generous portions and warm hospitality made it a memorable meal.

Relaxing by the River
In the evening, I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner at The Villas Restaurant. The restaurant is situated along the Son River, surrounded by karst mountains. The views were stunning, creating a serene and romantic ambiance. I enjoyed a delicious meal of local delicacies, savoring the flavors of Vietnam while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

To cap off the day, I ventured to King Kong Bar Phong Nha for a nightcap. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and I enjoyed a refreshing drink while mingling with fellow travelers. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I head back to my guesthouse, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Exploring the caves of Phong Nha was a truly awe-inspiring experience, and the local cuisine was a delight to the senses. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Hang Sơn Đoòng, the largest cave in the world ! I also plan to check out Harry's Coconuts, a local shop. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to discover new places, meet new people, and create lasting memories. Perhaps Lena would enjoy this place as well; I'll have to remember to bring her sometime.
Tomorrow promises even more adventure, and I can't wait to see what Phong Nha has in store for me. I hope the weather cooperates!
In the meantime, *na zdraví*!
