Farewell, Phong Nha: A Day of Botanical Beauty & Culinary Delights

As my adventure in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park draws to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken. From the depths of colossal caves to the vibrant local culture, each day has been a unique chapter in this Vietnamese escapade. Today, I embraced a more tranquil pace, immersing myself in the natural beauty of the region and savoring its culinary offerings one last time.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. It was a delightful start, and the lemongrass chili mushrooms were a particular highlight. I appreciate the laid-back service and the freshness of the food. It's a testament to the growing vegan scene here, and I was happy to support a local business that prioritizes plant-based cuisine.

With a satisfied stomach, I set off to explore the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. The garden is located a short 20-minute drive from Son Trach town. The weather was quite pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 27°C, typical for November. The garden offered a rare opportunity to trek through the jungle without a guide. As I walked along the designated trails, I was surrounded by incredible biodiversity, with hundreds of plant species identified along the way.

The tranquility of the Phong Nha Botanic Garden offered a serene contrast to the adventurous cave explorations, providing a perfect reflective end to my journey.

The garden is not what one might expect from a typical botanical garden; instead, it's a section of the real jungle within Phong Nha National Park. It spans over 40 hectares and is home to over 500 plant species. The lush tropical forest was breathtaking, and I made sure to keep an eye out for the beautiful orchids and exotic birds that inhabit the area. I also admired the 100-year-old Sao trees, capturing their majesty with my camera.

One of the highlights of the botanic garden was the Gio Waterfall. The cascade of cold, refreshing water was a welcome treat after a steamy hike through the wilderness. Although the waterfall's flow might be smaller during the dry season, it was still a spectacular sight.

After immersing myself in nature, I headed back to town for lunch at Son Doong Restaurant. The restaurant has a charming and rustic ambiance that perfectly complements its natural surroundings. I enjoyed a set platter featuring a variety of Vietnamese dishes, which were well-portioned and satisfying.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in some local shopping. I visited Shop Quỳnh Giang Clothing, a local shop known for its unique and fashionable items. Each piece of clothing is thoughtfully selected, showcasing intricate details and vibrant patterns that capture the essence of Vietnamese artistry. I found a beautiful silk scarf that will serve as a perfect souvenir, reminding me of my time in Phong Nha. It’s always a pleasure to support local artisans and take home a piece of the culture.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and is run by a local couple with extensive experience in the culinary industry. I opted for some traditional Vietnamese dishes, savoring the flavors and spices that have characterized my culinary journey through the region.

Reflecting on my time in Phong Nha-Ke Bang, I realize how much this solo trip has enriched my perspective. The park's dedication to conservation and sustainable tourism resonates deeply with my values. The memories of exploring the caves, hiking through the jungle, and connecting with the local culture will stay with me long after I've returned to Munich.

Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back home, carrying with me a treasure trove of experiences and photographs. While there are no specific itinerary items for tomorrow as my trip concludes, I plan to depart from Phong Nha, taking a bus or train back to Da Nang for my flight to Munich. I’m already anticipating sharing stories with Lena about the breathtaking beauty and unique adventures that defined my solo exploration of Vietnam's natural wonders. This trip has not only been a journey through a stunning landscape but also a personal reflection on the importance of preserving our planet's natural treasures.

Until next time, keep exploring and cherishing the beauty of our world.
