Chasing the Untamed: A Near Miss with Hornstrandir

The allure of the wild had been calling to me since I first planned this solo trip to Isafjordur. Today, that call led me to the edge of one of Iceland’s most remote and breathtaking regions. It was a day of contrasts, where the stark beauty of nature met the quaint charm of a small town, and where a slight detour led to unexpected discoveries.

My day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at Hótel Ísafjörður. Fuelling up with some Icelandic skyr and strong coffee, I felt ready to embrace whatever the day might throw my way. The primary goal was Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, a place I had read so much about and seen countless photos of. The plan was to take a boat trip from Isafjordur, and immerse myself in the untouched landscapes of the northernmost part of the Westfjords.
However, as I made my way to the harbor, I learned that October is a tricky time for visiting Hornstrandir. Ferries stop running around this time, and access becomes nearly impossible due to the increasingly harsh weather conditions. Disappointment washed over me, but I quickly reminded myself that adaptability is key to any good travel adventure, especially when you're exploring solo. I decided to embrace the change of plans and see what else Isafjordur had to offer.
Instead of battling the rough seas to Hornstrandir, I opted for a more grounded approach, deciding to explore the town itself and perhaps venture out to some nearby accessible spots. After all, the beauty of solo travel is the freedom to change course on a whim.
I started with a visit to Geðræktarmiðstöðin Vesturafl - Nytjamarkaður, a local thrift store. Now, I know what you might be thinking: a thrift store? But trust me, it's more than just old clothes and dusty furniture. It’s a glimpse into the local culture and a chance to find unique souvenirs that you won’t find in any tourist shop. I ended up finding a beautiful, hand-knitted wool scarf, perfect for the increasingly chilly weather. It felt like a little piece of Isafjordur I could take back home with me.
Sometimes, the best discoveries are the ones you stumble upon when your original plans fall through.

Lunch was at Heimabyggð, a charming café I had spotted earlier. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured traditional Icelandic fare. I opted for a hearty lamb soup, which was exactly what I needed to warm up after the blustery morning. The soup was rich and flavorful, and the bread that came with it was still warm from the oven. It was the perfect comfort food on a day that didn’t quite go as planned.
After lunch, I decided to take a walk around the town. Isafjordur is a town steeped in maritime history, and it's evident in the colorful wooden houses and the bustling harbor. I wandered through the streets, admiring the architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. The town is nestled amidst stunning landscapes, with mountains rising sharply on either side, creating a dramatic backdrop. Even though the weather was a bit gloomy, the scenery was still breathtaking.
I learned that Isafjordur's old town boasts wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs, built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries, which really gives it a unique feel. I imagined what life must have been like back then, when the town was a bustling hub for the fishing industry.
As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to the sea once more. I walked along the harbor, watching the fishing boats come and go. The air was filled with the salty scent of the ocean, and the cries of seagulls echoed overhead. I thought about the fishermen who brave these waters every day, and I felt a deep respect for their resilience and their connection to the sea.
I considered visiting the Westfjords Heritage Museum, but it seemed like it was closed for the season. Instead, I found myself drawn to a local bookstore, where I spent a happy hour browsing the shelves. I picked up a book of Icelandic folk tales, which I thought would be a perfect way to learn more about the culture and history of this fascinating country. Perhaps I'll read it tomorrow at Kaffihús Bakarans while having breakfast, since that's where I'm planning to start my day.
Dinner was at Jötunn restaurant, recommended by a local I met at the thrift store. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured modern Icelandic cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. I decided to try the Arctic char, which was cooked to perfection and served with a delicious sauce. It was a fitting end to a day that had started with disappointment but ended with unexpected delights.
Even though I didn’t make it to Hornstrandir today, I discovered a different side of Isafjordur, one that was just as captivating in its own way. I learned that sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don’t plan. It’s about embracing the unexpected, being open to new possibilities, and finding beauty in the everyday. And who knows, maybe I’ll come back to Isafjordur someday and finally make it to Hornstrandir. But for now, I’m content with the memories I made today, and I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I'm planning on seeing the Flóðvarnarveggur and the Rainbow Path.
As I reflect on the day, I realize that the beauty of solo travel lies in these moments of serendipity. It’s about allowing yourself to be guided by your curiosity, and trusting that the universe will lead you to where you need to be. And sometimes, where you need to be is not where you originally intended to go. But that’s okay. Because as I learned today, the detours can be just as rewarding as the destinations.
Back at Hótel Ísafjörður, I journaled about my day, the wind howling outside, a comforting reminder of the wildness that surrounds this town. I thought about Olivia and how she would have loved the cozy café and the quirky thrift store. Maybe one day, we'll come back here together.
For now, I’m grateful for the unexpected turns my journey has taken, and I’m excited to see what adventures await me in the days to come. After all, isn't that what travel is all about?
