Exploring Kyoto's Cultural Heritage with Friends
Day 1: A Day of Emperors and Manga in Kyoto
Exploring Kyoto's imperial history at Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace, then diving into the world of manga with friends.
Kyoto's Royal and Artistic Heritage
Today marked the beginning of our Kyoto adventure, and what a start it was! I was particularly excited, as this trip combined two of my great loves: history and the captivating world of manga. Sharing this with my friends made it even more special. I'm eager to share our experiences as we journeyed through imperial palaces and delved into the art of Japanese comics.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant was a delightful introduction to Kyoto's culinary scene. It had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I particularly enjoyed the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, which featured a variety of local vegetable dishes that paired perfectly with rice. It reminded me of Fatima's cooking back home, always fresh and flavorful. Nelson and Sheila would have loved the pumpkin and taro root dishes. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was Nijō Castle. The castle's imposing architecture immediately transported me back in time. The intricate details of the Ninomaru Palace were breathtaking, and I found myself imagining the Shoguns who once walked those very halls. It's amazing to think about the historical events that unfolded within those walls. As someone who enjoys history, I was captivated by the stories our guide shared about the Tokugawa shogunate and the castle's role in the Edo period. The cherry blossom trees around the castle were just starting to bloom, adding a touch of spring beauty to the already impressive site. I learned that Nijo Castle is hosting the “NAKED meets Nijo Castle 2025 Sakura” event, which includes illuminations and projection mapping.

History is not just a collection of dates and names; it's a vibrant tapestry of human experiences, triumphs, and struggles that shape our present.
After immersing ourselves in feudal history, we headed to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. What a contrast! From the solemnity of the castle to the vibrant energy of manga, it was a fascinating shift. The museum itself is housed in a former elementary school, which added a unique charm to the experience. The sheer volume of manga on display was astounding. I saw everything from classic series I read as a kid to modern works I'd never heard of. I even tried my hand at drawing a manga character in one of the workshops. It was far more challenging than it looks! I was particularly drawn to an exhibition highlighting the connection between Taiwanese and Japanese manga culture, showcasing how these two countries have influenced each other’s artistic expressions.

Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The palace exuded a sense of serenity and grandeur. Walking through the meticulously maintained gardens, I felt a profound connection to Japan's imperial past. The architecture was stunning, and the stories of emperors and empresses who once resided there brought the palace to life. Unfortunately, we missed the special spring opening that occurred in February, which showcased plum blossom-themed cedar door paintings and enthronement ceremony costumes. Still, the palace was beautiful to explore, and the history was palpable. I imagined Fatima would have loved wandering through the gardens, appreciating the delicate balance of nature and design.

As the day wound down, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. We stopped by The Common One Bar Kyoto, a modern bar with a traditional twist. The bar was a little hard to find, tucked away, but that added to its charm. The interior was beautifully designed, blending tatami rooms and a tea room into a cohesive space. I enjoyed a brandy-based cocktail, which was expertly crafted and incredibly flavorful. The bartenders paid meticulous attention to detail, creating a truly special experience. It was the perfect way to relax and reflect on our first day in Kyoto.

For dinner, we chose Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a special occasion. We sat at the counter, watching the chef prepare our meals with incredible skill. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the service was outstanding. It was definitely one of the best meals I've had in Japan.

Today has been an incredible start to our Kyoto adventure. From the historical depths of Nijō Castle and the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the playful heights of the Manga Museum, Kyoto has already revealed itself to be a city of captivating contrasts. I'm excited for tomorrow, where we plan to explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, visit Tenryu-ji Temple, and perhaps even brave the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Arash's Kitchen for lunch and THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. It’s going to be another day filled with new discoveries and unforgettable memories with my friends. I'm also hoping to pick up some unique souvenirs at the Kyoto Crafts Store.
