Kyoto's Enchanting Embrace

Today, Kyoto unveiled more of its captivating charm. From serene temples whispering ancient tales to vibrant cultural performances and culinary delights, it was a day of immersive experiences that deepened my appreciation for this historic city. Fatima would have loved this, and I can't wait to share these stories with her and the kids back in Edmonton.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at French Dining Top of Kyoto. As an electrician, I appreciate precision and craftsmanship, and the chefs here displayed both in abundance. The pastries were flaky and the coffee robust, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the simple pleasures of sharing a good meal with Fatima back home. I savored each bite, knowing the day ahead would be filled with discoveries. I made sure to grab an extra pastry for later, a little treat to look forward to.

Our first stop was Nanzen-ji Temple, a place that immediately transported me back in time. Founded in the 13th century by Emperor Kameyama, it was originally his retirement villa before being converted into a Zen temple. The sheer scale of the Sanmon entrance gate was awe-inspiring, extending high above the treetops. It was constructed in 1628 by the Tokugawa clan to honor soldiers who perished in the Osaka Castle siege. I learned that Nanzen-ji holds a unique position, standing above the traditional five mountains system of Zen temples, a testament to its historical and spiritual significance. The central grounds are free to explore, and I wandered through the serene space, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. The temple's history is rich, having been rebuilt several times after fires during the Muromachi period. I spent some time admiring the Hojo gardens, a stunning example of karesansui (rock gardens), designed in the 1600s by Kobori Enshu. It was fascinating to learn that Zenkei Shibayama, known for his commentary on the Mumonkan, once served as an abbot here.

The essence of Zen lies not in grand gestures, but in the quiet contemplation of the present moment.

One of the most unexpected sights was the large brick aqueduct, Suirokaku, which cuts through the temple grounds. Built during the Meiji Period, it's part of a canal system created to transport water and goods between Kyoto and Lake Biwa. It was a striking juxtaposition of ancient spirituality and modern engineering. Afterwards, I explored some of Nanzen-ji's subtemples, including Konchi-in and Tenjuan, each with its unique charm and history. Konchi-in, founded in 1400, features beautiful buildings, paintings, rock gardens, and even a miniature Toshogu Shrine. Tenjuan, dedicated to a Zen master who served Emperor Kameyama, boasts a main hall, gate, and study dating back to the 17th century. Spending time in these tranquil spaces was a welcome escape from the bustling city.

Next, we visited Eikan-dō Temple, a short distance from Nanzen-ji. Formally known as Zenrinji Temple, Eikan-do belongs to the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism and is renowned for its autumn colors. Although it's March, the temple still held a serene beauty. Founded in 855 by the priest Shinshō, it was later renamed Eikan-do in the 11th century to honor the philanthropic priest Eikan. One of the most striking features is the Tahoto Pagoda, nestled on a hillside offering panoramic views of the city. The Hojo Pond, with its carefully cultivated garden, was another highlight. Inside the Amida-do hall, I saw the famous Mikaeri Amida Buddha statue, which glances backwards. Legend has it that the statue turned its head to speak with Priest Eikan, solidifying its importance. The halls are connected by covered walkways and staircases, creating a unique architectural experience as you move through the temple complex. I learned that Eikan-do served as a center of learning and training for the Seizan branch of the Pure Land School. The temple was destroyed during the Onin War (1467-1477) but was rebuilt in the 16th century. As I walked through the gardens, I could imagine the vibrant colors of autumn, a sight I hope to witness one day.

For lunch, we dined at Oryori Menami, a restaurant celebrated for its Obanzai cuisine. Obanzai emphasizes seasonal ingredients and traditional Kyoto cooking methods. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, blending modern aesthetics with traditional elements. Founded in 1939, Menami is known for its Kyoto flavors and homespun meals. I enjoyed a variety of small plates, each thoughtfully prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The flavors were subtle yet satisfying, offering an authentic taste of Japanese home cooking. It reminded me of the meals Fatima prepares, simple but full of heart. I discovered that the restaurant also offers an izakaya-style dining experience, which I'll have to try next time. The attentive service added to the overall enjoyment of the meal, making it a memorable culinary experience.

In the afternoon, we headed to Gion Corner, located in the Gion district, to experience a traditional Japanese performing arts show. This was a highlight of the day, offering a glimpse into seven different art forms in a single, hour-long performance. I saw actual maiko (apprentice geisha) and geiko (geisha) perform on stage. The show included a tea ceremony, koto music, ikebana (flower arranging), gagaku (court music), kyogen (ancient comic plays), and Kyomai (Kyoto-style dance). It was fascinating to see these art forms presented in such a condensed and accessible format. The Kyomai dance, performed by the maiko, was particularly captivating. I learned that Gion Corner is located inside Yasaka Hall, near the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Hall, where the Miyako Odori is held. The show is geared towards foreign visitors, providing a comprehensive introduction to Japanese culture. I also visited the Maiko Gallery, which displayed videos of dances, hair decorations, and other items related to the maiko. It was a captivating experience that deepened my understanding and appreciation for Japanese arts.

As evening approached, we enjoyed dinner at Chihana, known for its exquisite Japanese cuisine. The service was exceptional, with the chefs and waitresses showing genuine enthusiasm for the food. The dishes were prepared with incredible attention to detail, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. I savored each course, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into every plate. The flavors were complex and harmonious, a testament to the chef's expertise. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, creating a memorable dining experience. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and exploration.

To cap off the night, we visited Bar Fishbowl, a unique spot known for its extensive selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. The bar had a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day. I enjoyed a glass of Japanese whiskey, savoring its smooth, rich flavor. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, making it a great place to relax and reflect on the day's experiences. It reminded me of the times I've spent with my friends back in Edmonton, sharing stories and laughter over drinks. The bar's unique atmosphere and selection of beverages made it a memorable end to an already incredible day.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Kyoto adventure. We plan to visit the Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto Tower, and Nishiki Market. I'm particularly excited about the Railway Museum, as I've always been fascinated by trains and engineering. I'm also looking forward to exploring Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto's Kitchen, to sample local delicacies and purchase souvenirs for Fatima and the kids. I want to bring back something special that captures the essence of this incredible journey. We'll also stop by Kazari Nishiki, a shop known for its crafts. As our trip comes to a close, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the memories we've created. Kyoto has truly captured my heart, and I hope to return someday with my family to share its beauty and culture with them.

The memories of today, from the serene temples to the vibrant performances, will stay with me long after I leave Kyoto. This journey has not only enriched my understanding of Japanese culture but has also reminded me of the importance of cherishing every moment and sharing it with loved ones.
