Today was nothing short of magical! As I sit here, the soft glow of our guesthouse in Ponta Verde barely illuminating my journal, I can't help but smile reflecting on the day's adventures. Lençóis Maranhenses continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn.

We started our day early, fueled by a hearty breakfast at the Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. The local flavors were a delightful start to what promised to be an exciting day. Fatima, Nelson, Sheila, and I were all eager to explore the famed Dunas de Atins.

The journey to Atins was an adventure in itself. The landscape transformed dramatically as we approached the coastal village. Known for its strong winds, Atins is a haven for kitesurfers, and we could see several colorful kites dancing in the sky. The kids were immediately captivated, their eyes wide with wonder.

Our first stop was the Dunas de Atins. These dunes felt different from those we saw yesterday, perhaps because of their proximity to the ocean. The windswept sands created a mesmerizing landscape, and we spent a good hour just wandering and taking photos. Nelson, ever the energetic one, kept running up and down the dunes, while Sheila collected seashells, her small hands full of treasures. Fatima and I simply enjoyed the breathtaking views, the endless expanse of white meeting the azure sky.

After our dune exploration, it was time for the highlight of the day: Lagoa Bonita. Getting there involved a bit of a trek in a 4x4, a journey that added to the thrill. The ride was bumpy, and Sheila initially complained, but the excitement of what awaited soon overshadowed any discomfort.

Upon arriving at Lagoa Bonita, we were greeted by a steep dune. I must admit, the climb was a bit challenging, especially under the November sun, but there was even a rope to help with the climb. But the view from the top? Absolutely worth every drop of sweat! The vista was breathtaking – a panoramic view of the Lençóis Maranhenses, with countless lagoons nestled between the dunes. The kids were ecstatic, and even Fatima, who usually prefers a leisurely pace, was visibly impressed.

The lagoons themselves were a sight to behold. The water was crystal clear and inviting, and we wasted no time diving in. Swimming in Lagoa Bonita was an otherworldly experience. Surrounded by the stark white dunes, the cool, fresh water was incredibly refreshing. Nelson and Sheila splashed around, their laughter echoing across the dunes. Fatima and I relaxed in the shallows, soaking in the tranquility of the moment. It was a perfect family moment, one that I know we'll cherish for years to come.
We spent hours swimming and playing in the lagoons, exploring the different pools and marveling at the unique ecosystem. It's hard to believe that these lagoons are seasonal, filled by rainwater each year. Nature's artistry is truly astounding. I couldn’t help but think of Mozambique and how different, yet equally beautiful, the landscapes are there. I made a mental note to share these experiences with my family back home, hoping to inspire them to explore the world as well.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to Charme Beach Bar | Atins, a spot I had heard good things about. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventure. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music playing and people enjoying the beachside vibe. We ordered some local snacks and refreshing drinks, and simply relaxed, watching the sun slowly descend towards the horizon.

The sunset at Atins was nothing short of spectacular. The sky was painted with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple, casting a magical glow over the dunes and lagoons. I felt an immense sense of gratitude for this opportunity to share such special moments with my loved ones.

Dinner was, once again, at Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. We enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh seafood, savoring the flavors of the region. The kids were tired but happy, their faces flushed with sun and excitement. As we ate, we recounted our favorite moments of the day, reliving the laughter and joy we shared.

Back at our guesthouse, as I write this, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of the simple joys in life – the beauty of nature, the love of family, and the thrill of adventure. Lençóis Maranhenses has a way of captivating your heart and soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Canto de Atins and the natural pools, and I am already excited about what new wonders await us. I've heard that Canto de Atins offers a unique perspective of the region, and I am eager to see it for myself. Also, I am hoping to find a shop to replace the portable charger I forgot to bring, and to buy some mosquito repellent, as I am starting to feel the bites.
