Encountering the Divine in the Forest

Today's journey took me deep into the heart of Portugal, far from the familiar streets of Coimbra, to a place where nature and spirituality intertwine. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and unexpected discoveries, a true feast for the senses and the soul. This seventh day of my solo adventure was all about embracing the tranquility and historical richness of Serra do Buçaco.

My day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante PASSAPORTE Coimbra. The restaurant, offering magnificent views, provided the perfect setting to fuel up for my adventure. I savored a strong coffee and a traditional Portuguese pastry, while watching the city slowly wake up. The reviews I had read mentioned the excellent service, and I must agree, the staff was incredibly welcoming. It was a delightful start to what promised to be a memorable day. I even made a mental note to bring Fatima and the kids here someday; they would love the panoramic views.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Serra do Buçaco. The train journey was smooth, and as I approached the mountains, I could feel a sense of calm wash over me. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. I couldn't help but think of my garden back in Edmonton. I was missing tending to my vegetables and flowers, but I knew this journey was equally important for my soul.

My first stop was the Buçaco National Forest, a place that feels like stepping into a fairytale. The forest is a protected area located in the Serra do Buçaco, known for its incredible botanical diversity. As I wandered through the towering trees and lush undergrowth, I was struck by the sheer variety of plant life. From giant ferns to exotic flowers, every corner held a new discovery. The forest is meticulously maintained, with well-marked trails that made it easy to explore. I even stumbled upon a hidden waterfall, its gentle cascade adding to the serene atmosphere.

The forest whispers secrets of centuries past, a place where history and nature converge in perfect harmony.

The weather in February is mild, with temperatures hovering around 15°C (59°F), perfect for a leisurely hike. The humidity added a certain freshness to the air, making the forest feel alive. I made sure to wear my comfortable walking shoes, as the trails can be uneven in places. The sunlight filtering through the canopy created a magical effect, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. It was a photographer's dream, and I spent a good hour capturing the beauty of the surroundings with my camera.

As I walked deeper into the forest, I came across the Carmel of Saint Teresa, a hidden gem that exudes an aura of peace and contemplation. This serene sanctuary, nestled amidst the towering trees of Buçaco National Forest, offers a profound sense of tranquility and spiritual reflection. I learned that the Carmel is historically significant, representing a place of retreat and devotion for the Discalced Carmelite nuns. The architecture is simple yet elegant, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The quiet courtyards and peaceful gardens invite visitors to pause and reflect, providing a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

I spent some time exploring the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The Carmel's history is fascinating, dating back centuries and playing a significant role in the spiritual heritage of the region. It served as a place of solitude and prayer for the nuns, who dedicated their lives to contemplation and service.

I paused to reflect on my own life, my family, and the journey that had brought me here. It was a moment of profound introspection, a chance to reconnect with my inner self. I thought about Fatima and the kids, and how much I missed them. I made a silent promise to bring them here someday, to share this special place with them.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurante Refeitro da Baixa in Coimbra. Reviews raved about its cozy ambiance and exceptional food, and it did not disappoint. Housed in a 200-year-old building with a fireplace, the restaurant exuded warmth and charm. I opted for the duck breast with asparagus and chorizo risotto, a dish that was cooked to perfection. The service was friendly and efficient, adding to the overall experience. While the vegetarian options were limited, the flavors and ambiance more than made up for it.

After lunch, I decided to explore the Serra do Buçaco a bit more. The region is steeped in history, having been the site of the Battle of Buçaco in 1810, during the Peninsular War. The battle marked a turning point in the war, with the Anglo-Portuguese forces defeating the French army. Today, the area is a peaceful retreat, but the echoes of the past can still be felt.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Coimbra. For dinner, I chose Restaurante Aeminium, drawn by its reputation for traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant's decor was charming, with regional pottery adding a touch of authenticity. I ordered the bacalhau à brás, a classic codfish dish that was both comforting and delicious. While some reviews mentioned slow service, I found the staff to be attentive and friendly. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and reflection.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Liquidâmbar, a bar known for its lively atmosphere and good drinks. Located in the heart of Coimbra, the bar was buzzing with activity. I ordered a local beer and soaked in the vibrant ambiance. The bar is known for its cultural events, including jam sessions on Wednesdays, which added to its appeal. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

I thought about the contrast between this vibrant scene and the tranquility of the Buçaco forest. Both were equally appealing in their own way, reflecting the diverse experiences that Portugal has to offer. It reminded me of the music we listen to back home – Fatima loves the traditional sounds of Marrabenta, while Nelson and Sheila are all about the latest pop hits. Different tastes, different experiences, all part of the rich tapestry of life.

As I sipped my beer, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this solo adventure. It had given me the opportunity to reconnect with myself, to explore new places, and to appreciate the beauty of the world around me. I thought about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to the Castle of Montemor-o-Velho and the historical village of Piódão. I was excited to continue my journey, to discover more hidden gems, and to create memories that would last a lifetime.

Back at my accommodation, I reflected on the day's experiences. The Serra do Buçaco had exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of nature, history, and spirituality. The Carmel of Saint Teresa had provided a moment of profound introspection, while the local restaurants had tantalized my taste buds with authentic Portuguese flavors. It was a day that I would cherish forever, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found when we step outside our comfort zones and embrace the unknown.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile. Tomorrow promised new adventures, new discoveries, and new memories. And I, Joao Langa, the electrician from Edmonton, was ready to embrace them all. The thought of exploring the Castle of Montemor-o-Velho and the historical village of Piódão filled me with anticipation. I was eager to see what surprises Portugal had in store for me next.

The journey continues, and I can't wait to share it with you all. Until tomorrow, boa noite from Coimbra!
