Day 6: Coimbra's Charms: Bridges, Forests, and Poetic Views
Discover the serene beauty of Coimbra through its pedestrian bridge, lush national forest, and the poignant Miradouro do Penedo da Saudade.
A Day of Discoveries in Coimbra
Today, I embraced the quieter side of Coimbra, venturing beyond the historic center to explore its natural beauty and modern landmarks. It was a day of reflection, connection, and appreciation for the simple joys of travel. As I continue my solo journey, I find myself drawn to places where stories linger and landscapes inspire.
My day began with a hearty and healthy breakfast at Restaurante Fangas Veg. Finding vegetarian options that don't compromise on flavor can sometimes be a challenge, but this place exceeded my expectations. I savored a delightful combination of local produce and innovative recipes, fueling up for a day of exploration. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect start to my Tuesday. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to using fresh, local ingredients. It reminded me of Fatima's garden back in Edmonton, where she grows herbs and vegetables for our family meals. It's these little touches that make a place feel like home, even when you're miles away.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed towards Ponte Pedonal Pedro e Inês. The sun was shining, casting a warm glow on the city as I walked along the Mondego River. The bridge, a modern architectural marvel, gracefully arches over the water, connecting the city's banks. The colorful railings added a playful touch to the otherwise serene landscape. As I strolled across, I couldn't help but reflect on the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês. Their tale of forbidden love and heartbreaking loss has become an integral part of Coimbra's identity. The bridge serves as a poignant reminder of their enduring legacy.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of a city, away from the bustling crowds and iconic landmarks.
Next on my list was the Choupal National Forest. Eager to immerse myself in nature, I hopped on a local bus and made my way to this verdant oasis. As I stepped off the bus, I was immediately greeted by the refreshing scent of eucalyptus and pine. The forest, a sprawling grove of poplar trees, was initially planted to prevent floods from the Mondego River. Today, it serves as a popular recreational spot for locals and tourists alike. I spent hours wandering through the winding trails, marveling at the towering trees and the diverse birdlife. It was a welcome escape from the urban landscape, a chance to reconnect with nature and find some inner peace.

I even stumbled upon a group of students from ESN Coimbra participating in a cleanup event, which I later learned was the 'Social Angels' Day'. It was inspiring to see young people taking an active role in preserving the environment. It reminded me of Nelson's school back home, where they have regular environmental awareness programs. It's crucial to instill these values in the younger generation, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
For lunch, I decided to try Restaurante Compostu Tavern. The francesinha, a local delicacy, was highly recommended, and I was eager to give it a try. The restaurant had a cozy, tavern-like ambiance, with rustic decor and friendly staff. The francesinha itself was a culinary adventure – a multi-layered sandwich filled with various meats, topped with melted cheese and a rich tomato-beer sauce. It was definitely a unique and satisfying experience. I overheard other patrons praising the francesinha de massa folhada, which seems to be a house specialty.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Miradouro do Penedo da Saudade. Perched atop a hill, this historic garden offers panoramic views of Coimbra and the Mondego River. The name itself, Penedo da Saudade, translates to Boulder of Nostalgia, hinting at the poignant atmosphere of the place. As I strolled through the garden, I noticed stone plaques carved with poems and songs from past students of the University of Coimbra. It was a touching tribute to the city's academic heritage and the enduring power of memory. The garden is also linked to the legend of Pedro and Inês, adding another layer of romance and tragedy to its allure.

The views from the Miradouro were simply breathtaking. The city stretched out before me, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops and historic landmarks. The Mondego River snaked its way through the landscape, reflecting the golden light of the setting sun. As I stood there, soaking in the beauty of the moment, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to travel and experience new cultures.
Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at Forum Coimbra. It was a modern shopping center with a wide variety of stores. I was looking for a gift for Fatima and the kids, and I thought I might find something special there. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl for Fatima and some traditional Portuguese sweets for Nelson and Sheila. The shopping center was quite busy, but it had a lively and festive atmosphere. I even saw a playground area designed like a helicopter, which I'm sure Nelson would have loved.

For dinner, I chose Luca Restaurante. The restaurant offered a fusion of Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine, and the menu looked quite appealing. I ordered grilled salmon with couscous salad, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, and the presentation was impeccable. The service was attentive and friendly, making for a truly enjoyable dining experience.

As I walked back to my accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. Coimbra had surprised me with its blend of natural beauty, modern landmarks, and poignant history. It was a city that resonated with my soul, a place where I felt a sense of connection and belonging. I'm looking forward to tomorrow’s adventure to Serra do Buçaco and the Buçaco National Forest. I plan to start my day with breakfast at Restaurante PASSAPORTE Coimbra and end it with a drink at Liquidâmbar.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy a portable charger when I get back to Edmonton. My phone battery died on me twice today, and it was quite inconvenient. I also need to remember to pack sunscreen for tomorrow's hike. The Portuguese sun can be quite intense, even in February.
Tomorrow, I plan to venture further afield, exploring the Serra do Buçaco and its famed national forest. I've heard tales of its enchanting beauty and historic significance, and I'm eager to experience it firsthand. Until then, boa noite from Coimbra!
I am reminded of a Mozambican proverb my grandmother used to say: “Ukhamba liyangena liyaphuma,” which means, “The dipper goes into the river and comes out.” It speaks to the cyclical nature of life and the importance of embracing new experiences while always returning to your roots. This trip has been a dipper for me, bringing forth new experiences and insights, and I look forward to returning home with a refreshed perspective.
