Solo Adventure Through the Serene Seydisfjordur
Day 6: Chasing Waterfalls and Puffins: An Icelandic Dream
Exploring the majestic waterfalls and charming puffins of East Iceland, a day of unforgettable natural beauty and local flavors.
Eastfjords Expedition: Waterfalls, Wildlife, and Wonderful Eats
Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland's Eastfjords. It was a journey filled with cascading waters, charming wildlife, and the simple pleasures of savoring local flavors. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place – to connect with nature, challenge myself, and discover the hidden gems of this incredible island.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Old Bank - Hotel Aldan. Fuelled up with Icelandic delicacies, I set off towards Borgarfjörður Eystri, a place I had heard whispered about as a puffin paradise. The drive itself was a spectacle, winding through valleys painted with vibrant greens and framed by towering mountains. It felt like driving through a postcard, each turn revealing a new breathtaking vista. The weather was kind, a gentle sun kissing the landscape, making the colours pop even more. It was a stark contrast to the drizzle I had encountered earlier in the week, and I was grateful for the change.
Arriving in Borgarfjörður Eystri, I could immediately sense the charm of this small village. With a population of just around 100 people, it felt like stepping back in time. The main attraction, of course, was the puffin colony at Hafnarhólmi. As I approached the area, the air was filled with the distinctive calls of these adorable birds. There’s something incredibly endearing about puffins, with their colourful beaks and waddling walks. I spent a good couple of hours simply observing them, snapping photos, and soaking in the atmosphere. The viewing platforms made it easy to get close without disturbing their natural habitat, which I appreciated. I even saw a few parents feeding their young, a truly heartwarming sight. It was a reminder of the simple, yet profound, cycles of nature. I thought of Nelson and Sheila, my children, and how they would marvel at these creatures. I made a mental note to bring them here someday.

The beauty of Iceland isn't just in its grand landscapes, but in the intimate moments shared with its wildlife and the warmth of its local communities.
After my puffin encounter, I grabbed a quick lunch at Borgarholl. It was a simple meal, but satisfying, and the perfect fuel for the next leg of my journey. Next on the agenda was Klifbrekku Waterfall. The drive to Mjóifjörður, where the waterfall is located, was an adventure in itself. The gravel road, clinging to the side of the fjord, offered stunning views, but also required careful navigation. I was glad I had rented a sturdy vehicle for this trip. The road leading to the falls is often closed outside of the summer months, making access difficult.
Klifbrekku Waterfall is truly a hidden gem. It's a series of seven cascading waterfalls, each tier more beautiful than the last. The water tumbles down the cliffs, surrounded by lush greenery, creating a scene of serene beauty. Unlike many of Iceland's glacier-fed waterfalls, Klifbrekku is spring-fed, giving it an exceptionally pure quality. There aren't any official hiking trails, but I enjoyed exploring the area on foot, getting different perspectives of the falls. I found a peaceful spot by the river, sat down, and simply enjoyed the moment. The tranquility of the place was palpable, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It was a moment of pure bliss, connecting with nature on a profound level. The falls are visible from the road, but I recommend stopping and taking some time to appreciate them.

With the sun beginning its descent, I made my way towards Hengifoss, another of East Iceland's majestic waterfalls. The drive took me through winding roads, offering glimpses of the vast, open landscapes. Arriving at the parking area, I prepared myself for the hike. The trail to Hengifoss is about 2.5 kilometers each way and is considered easy to medium in difficulty. The initial part of the hike is a bit steep, with a series of steps, but it soon levels out into a gravel path.
Along the way, I was treated to views of Litlanesfoss, a smaller waterfall framed by basalt columns. It’s a unique sight, and well worth a stop. The gorge surrounding Litlanesfoss is steep, and it's important to stay on the marked path. After about an hour of hiking, I finally reached Hengifoss. At 128 meters, it's one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls. What makes Hengifoss particularly striking are the layers of red clay between the basalt rock, creating a striped pattern. It's a geological marvel, a testament to the forces that have shaped this island over millennia. I spent some time admiring the waterfall, taking photos, and simply soaking in the grandeur of the scene. The hike back down was much easier, and I arrived at the parking lot just as the sun dipped below the horizon.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Skaftfell Bistro back in Seydisfjordur. Located in the Skaftfell Art Center, the bistro has a cozy, artistic atmosphere. The menu features local ingredients and innovative dishes, a perfect reflection of the region. I ordered a seafood dish, savoring the fresh flavors of the Icelandic waters. The bistro also has a selection of local beers, which I happily sampled. The staff were friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive experience. Skaftfell Bistro also pays homage to Swiss-German artist Dieter Roth, who lived and worked in Seyðisfjörður. After dinner, I enjoyed a drink at Skaftfell Bistro, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar had a relaxed atmosphere, and I chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the history and culture of Seydisfjordur. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Seydisfjordur [DayNumber:7]. I plan to explore the town itself, visiting the East Iceland Heritage Museum and soaking in the local atmosphere. I might even do some souvenir shopping at Markadur before heading to Norð Austur - Sushi & Bar for a farewell dinner. It’s been an incredible journey, one that I will cherish for years to come. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the beauty and culture of this unique corner of the world. I know that I will be back someday, perhaps with my family in tow. Until then, I will carry the memories of Seydisfjordur in my heart, a reminder of the power of solo travel and the transformative magic of Iceland. But for now, it's time to rest and prepare for one last day of exploration.
