Through the Peaks and Flavors of Kumano Kodo

Today was a day of both physical challenge and culinary delight as I continued my solo pilgrimage along the Kumano Kodo. The ancient trail led me across the Shiomi-togego'e Mountain Pass, a trek that tested my endurance but rewarded me with breathtaking views of Yoshino Kumano National Park. And as always, the local cuisine provided moments of delicious respite, fueling both body and soul.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Watarase Onsen Cafe. It's funny, I never thought I'd find myself enjoying a traditional Japanese breakfast so much. It's a far cry from the toast and coffee I usually grab in Edmonton before heading to a job site. This morning, I savored every bite of the grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice, knowing I'd need the energy for the climb ahead.

The Shiomi-togego'e Mountain Pass Crossing was every bit as challenging as I had anticipated. The trail wound its way up the mountainside, with steep inclines and uneven terrain. The humidity was intense, and I found myself stopping frequently to catch my breath and wipe the sweat from my brow. But with each step, the views became more spectacular. The lush forests of Yoshino Kumano National Park stretched out before me, a sea of green broken only by the occasional glimpse of a distant village or the shimmering surface of a river.

The mountains were alive with the whispers of ancient pilgrims, their footsteps echoing in my own.

As I climbed higher, I couldn't help but think about the countless pilgrims who had walked this same path over the centuries. What were their hopes and fears? What drove them to undertake such a arduous journey? I imagined them clad in white robes, chanting sutras, their faces etched with determination. I felt a deep connection to these fellow travelers, a sense of shared purpose that transcended time and culture.

Reaching the summit of the pass was a moment of pure elation. I stood there, gazing out at the panoramic vista, feeling a profound sense of accomplishment. The air was cool and crisp, and the silence was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the fresh mountain air. It was a moment of perfect peace, a reminder of the simple beauty of the natural world.

After descending from the mountain pass, I was more than ready for lunch. I stopped at the Fushiogami Teahouse, a charming little cafe nestled along the trail. The teahouse was a welcome sight, offering a serene escape with its traditional Japanese decor and tranquil surroundings. I enjoyed a light lunch of tea and snacks, savoring the subtle flavors and the peaceful ambiance. The staff was incredibly friendly, offering insights about the tea and the brewing process. It was the perfect spot to recharge before continuing my journey.

As the sun began to set, I arrived in the town of Tanabe, where I planned to have dinner. I chose Akihei, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Japanese cuisine. Founded in 1870, Akihei exudes a serene, traditional Japanese atmosphere. The fifth-generation owner prepared a variety of dishes, including sukiyaki, tempura, sushi and sashimi. I opted for a set meal featuring local seafood, savoring each bite as I reflected on the day's adventures. The owner's wife was very kind and spoke English, which helped me a lot.

After dinner, I decided to check out a local bar called Why Kumano. It turned out to be a convenient hostel accommodation with a bar and café. I enjoyed a local craft beer while chatting with some of the other patrons, who were a mix of locals and fellow travelers. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of hiking and to learn more about the Kumano region. The managers were incredibly friendly and full of local information.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. The Shiomi-togego'e Mountain Pass Crossing was a physical challenge, but it was also a spiritual journey. The local cuisine was a delight to my senses, and the people I met along the way were warm and welcoming. I'm reminded of something Fatima often says: A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles. And while I'm traveling solo, I'm finding connections with people and with the land that make this pilgrimage all the more meaningful.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue along the Kumano-Kodo Nakahechi Pilgrimage Route and visit Fudarakusan-ji. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery, both within myself and in the world around me.

I am hoping to find some inner peace, but also to bring back some inspiration for my family. I want to show Nelson and Sheila that there is a big world out there, full of wonder and beauty. And maybe, just maybe, I can convince Fatima to join me on a future adventure. Until then, I'll keep walking, keep exploring, and keep sharing my stories with you.
