A Day of Ancient Wonders

Today, Elke, Maximilian, and I immersed ourselves in the captivating landscapes of Goreme, Turkey, a place where history and natural beauty intertwine seamlessly. From exploring ancient castles to wandering through national parks, every moment felt like stepping into a living fairytale. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and delightful culinary experiences, further enriching our appreciation for this unique corner of the world.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at My Mother’s Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and the delicious spread of Turkish delicacies were the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I savored the strong Turkish coffee, while Maximilian enjoyed the fresh salads, setting a positive tone for the adventures ahead.

After breakfast, we set off to Uchisar Castle, the highest point in Cappadocia. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape transforming into a panorama of otherworldly rock formations. As we approached Uchisar, the castle loomed large, a testament to the region's rich history.

The castle's history dates back to ancient times, with its structure evolving through the Roman and Byzantine eras. It served as a refuge for early Christians and later as a strategic military outpost. Climbing the winding stairways to the summit was a bit of a challenge, but the panoramic views were well worth the effort. From the top, we could see the entire region of Cappadocia spread out before us, a breathtaking tapestry of valleys and fairy chimneys. The soft volcanic tuff, from which the castle is carved, bore witness to centuries of human ingenuity and resilience.

Maximilian, ever the curious one, was fascinated by the intricate network of rooms and tunnels within the castle. He imagined what life must have been like for the people who once lived and defended this fortress. Elke, with her keen eye for detail, admired the faint traces of frescoes in the old chapels, remnants of a vibrant religious past. As I stood there, gazing at the landscape, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the countless generations who had stood in the same spot, marveling at the same view. It was a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

To truly appreciate a place, one must immerse oneself in its history and culture, allowing the past to inform the present.

Leaving Uchisar Castle, we made our way to Goreme Historical National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unique geological formations and ancient cave dwellings. As we entered the park, we were immediately struck by the surreal landscape of fairy chimneys, rock pillars, and multicolored cliffs. The park spans nearly 100 square kilometers and showcases the remarkable power of nature and human adaptation.

The fairy chimneys, formed by millions of years of volcanic activity and erosion, are truly a sight to behold. These tall, thin rock spires, capped with basalt, create an otherworldly panorama that seems straight out of a storybook. We wandered through Love Valley, one of the most famous locations in the park, where the fairy chimneys stand in clustered formations, creating a whimsical landscape.

The park's history is equally fascinating. The soft volcanic rock allowed for the creation of extensive underground settlements, offering protection from invasions and harsh environmental conditions. Early Christian communities carved churches and monasteries into the rock, many of which still preserve stunning frescoes. We explored some of these ancient dwellings, marveling at the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who once called them home.

Elke, with her background as a librarian, was particularly interested in the historical context of the park. She shared stories of the early monastic activity in Cappadocia and the ways in which the region's unique geology shaped its cultural development. Maximilian, always eager for adventure, enjoyed climbing the rocks and exploring the hidden corners of the park. We spent hours wandering through the valleys, taking photographs, and simply soaking in the beauty of our surroundings. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

For lunch, we had reservations at Topdeck Cave Restaurant, a cozy eatery known for its traditional Turkish cuisine. The restaurant is nestled in one of Goreme's cave houses, adding to its unique charm. We were warmly greeted by the family who runs the restaurant and shown to a table with comfortable seating.

The menu at Topdeck changes daily, featuring fresh, local ingredients prepared with care. We started with a selection of mezes, including hummus, muhammara, and zucchini pancakes, each bursting with flavor. For our main courses, I ordered the chicken wrap, while Elke opted for the Turkish ravioli. Maximilian, with his adventurous palate, tried the oven-baked lamb dish, which was a standout. The food was delicious, and the cozy atmosphere made us feel right at home.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Galerie İkman, a well-known carpet shop in Goreme. The shop is famous for its stunning displays of colorful rugs, making it a popular spot for photographs. As we approached the shop, we were immediately drawn in by the vibrant textiles adorning the walls.

Inside, we were greeted by the staff, who informed us that there was a fee to take photos and explore the shop. Despite the fee, we decided to go ahead, as we had heard so much about the shop's unique atmosphere. The interior was even more impressive than the exterior, with rugs of every color and pattern imaginable filling the space. The displays were artfully arranged, creating a visually stunning experience.

Maximilian, with his keen eye for design, was fascinated by the intricate patterns and textures of the rugs. He took numerous photos, capturing the beauty and craftsmanship of each piece. Elke, with her appreciation for culture, enjoyed learning about the history and symbolism behind the different designs. While we didn't end up purchasing any rugs, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and captured some memorable photos.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to ROCKS TERRACE RESTAURANT for dinner. This restaurant is known for its panoramic views of Cappadocia, offering a 360-degree vista of the surrounding landscape. As we arrived, we were immediately struck by the breathtaking scenery. The terrace seating provided an unparalleled view of the fairy chimneys and valleys, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun.

The menu at ROCKS TERRACE RESTAURANT features a diverse selection of Turkish dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. We started with a selection of mezes, including stuffed grape leaves, spicy tomato dip, and creamy yogurt with herbs. For our main courses, I ordered the beef skewers, while Elke chose the chicken pottery kebab. Maximilian, with his adventurous spirit, opted for the traditional Turkish soup. The food was delicious, and the views were simply spectacular.

As we savored our meal, we watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in a riot of colors. The fairy chimneys seemed to glow in the fading light, creating a magical atmosphere that we will never forget. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Cappadocia National Park and the Zelve Open Air Museum, followed by drinks at Rooftop by Castle. I'm already looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this enchanting region.
