Day 2: Tranquility and Art in Nara: A Day of Gardens and Ancient Treasures
Immerse yourself in Nara's serene gardens and cultural treasures. Explore Isuien, Yoshikien, and the Nara National Museum on a solo journey.
A Day of Serenity and Discovery
Today, my second day in Nara, was a gentle immersion into the city's quieter, more contemplative side. Leaving behind the bustling energy of yesterday, I sought solace in its famed gardens and artistic heritage. It was a day of slow, deliberate exploration, perfectly aligning with my desire to connect deeply with the essence of this historical heartland.
My day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at Vegan Cafe Ramuna. It's always a pleasure to find establishments that cater to plant-based diets, and this little cafe was a gem. The tofu scramble was particularly good, providing a hearty start to what promised to be a day filled with visual delights.

From there, I ventured to the Isuien Garden and Neiraku Museum. The garden, as its name suggests, is a garden based on water, and it truly is an oasis of tranquility. The meticulous landscaping, with its carefully placed stones and perfectly pruned trees, reflected in the still ponds, created a scene of perfect harmony. It was a masterclass in how to blend nature and art, something I appreciate deeply as a furniture restorer. I spent a considerable amount of time simply sitting by the water, sketchbook in hand, capturing the essence of the garden's design. The Neiraku Museum, nestled within the garden, was an added bonus. Its collection of East Asian art, particularly the ancient bronze pieces, offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's artistic past.

The beauty of Nara lies not just in its grand temples, but in the quiet corners where art and nature intertwine.
Next on my list was the Yoshikien Garden, a short walk from Isuien. This garden, with its moss garden, pond garden, and tea ceremony garden, offered a different but equally enchanting experience. The moss garden was particularly captivating, with its lush carpet of green punctuated by small, carefully placed stones. It felt like stepping into another world, a world of quiet contemplation and natural beauty. I imagined Elke would have loved this garden; she has always had an affinity for moss and its velvety texture. I made a mental note to find a small moss garden for our balcony back in Heidelberg.

Lunch at Awa Naramachi was a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant, located in a traditional Machiya townhouse, served exquisite local cuisine. I opted for the set lunch, which included a variety of small dishes, each a work of art in itself. The delicate flavors and textures were a testament to the chef's skill and the region's rich culinary heritage. It was a meal to be savored, a moment of pure gastronomic pleasure.

In the afternoon, I made my way to the Nara National Museum. As someone who appreciates the craftsmanship of historical objects, I was eager to explore its collection of Buddhist art. The museum did not disappoint. The sculptures, paintings, and artifacts on display were a testament to the skill and artistry of generations of Japanese artists. I was particularly drawn to the intricate details of the Buddhist statues, each one a masterpiece of form and expression. I spent hours wandering through the galleries, lost in the beauty and history of these ancient treasures.

As I examined a particularly well-preserved lacquered box, I couldn't help but think about my own work. Restoring antique furniture is, in many ways, a similar endeavor to preserving these artifacts. It's about understanding the materials, the techniques, and the history behind each piece. It's about honoring the craftsmanship of the past and ensuring that these objects continue to inspire future generations.
Before dinner, I decided to indulge in a bit of local nightlife and visited LAMP BAR. While I am not one for staying out late, I thought it would be good to see a different side of Nara. The bar was cozy and inviting, with a wide selection of Japanese whisky and sake. I opted for a glass of local sake, which the bartender recommended, and enjoyed it while chatting with a few locals. It was a pleasant way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Wa Yamamura, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite Kaiseki cuisine. The meal was an unforgettable experience, a symphony of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Japanese gastronomy. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and expertly prepared. The service was impeccable, the atmosphere refined and elegant. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion.

As I walked back to the JW Marriott Hotel Nara, I reflected on the day's experiences. Nara had revealed itself to me in layers, each more captivating than the last. The gardens had offered a sense of tranquility and connection with nature, the museum had provided a glimpse into the region's artistic heritage, and the restaurants had delighted my palate with their culinary creations. It was a day of perfect balance, a day that had nourished my soul and inspired my mind.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Nara's historical heart, visiting Kofuku-ji Temple and exploring the Naramachi Historic District. I am particularly interested in seeing the Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie (Lattice House), as I am always fascinated by traditional architectural details. I also plan to take a stroll down Nara Higashimuki Shopping Street. I am looking forward to another day of discovery and immersion in this fascinating city.
Back at the hotel, I took some time to jot down notes in my travel journal, capturing the essence of the day's experiences. I also took the time to call Elke. It's always good to hear her voice, and to share with her the highlights of my day. She was particularly interested in the gardens, and I promised to bring her back some pictures and stories.
As I prepare for sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore Nara. It's a city that has exceeded my expectations, a city that has touched my heart and inspired my soul. I am eager to see what tomorrow will bring, and to continue my journey of discovery in this historical heartland.
The sunscreen I forgot to pack is starting to become a real issue, I will have to make time to buy some tomorrow. Also, my international power adapter seems to be faulty, so I will need to find a replacement soon.
Good night from Nara.
