Coastal Delights: A Day of Flavors and Family Fun

Today was a vibrant mix of flavors, family time, and exploring local treasures along the stunning Coral Coast. It's days like these that remind me why I love returning to Fiji – the warmth of the people, the incredible food, and the laid-back atmosphere. Come along as I share our day's adventures!

The day began with the tantalizing aroma of spices wafting from INDIANA CURRY HOUSE & BAR. Mere and Sailosi were particularly excited for this, as they had heard me rave about Fijian-Indian cuisine for years. Stepping inside, we were greeted by the friendly staff and a bustling atmosphere. I ordered my favorite, a spicy lamb vindaloo, while Mere opted for a milder butter chicken, and Sailosi, ever adventurous, chose a tandoori chicken. Each dish was a burst of flavors, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Fiji. The naan was soft and chewy, the samosas were perfectly spiced, and even Mere, who usually prefers milder flavors, couldn't get enough of the mango curry with cashew sauce. It was a delightful start to our day, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in sharing this part of my heritage with my family. Thinking back to my childhood in Navua, food was always a central part of our gatherings, and it felt special to recreate that experience with my family here on the Coral Coast.

Food is not simply eating energy. It’s an experience.

After our satisfying breakfast, we decided to explore Sigatoka Central Store. I wanted to find some authentic Fijian souvenirs to take back to Vancouver, something that would remind us of this trip long after we've returned home. The store was a treasure trove of local crafts, from handcrafted jewelry to intricately designed bags. Sailosi was particularly fascinated by the wood carvings, while Mere admired the vibrant colors of the traditional Fijian attire. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted tapa cloth, perfect for hanging in our living room. It was more than just a souvenir; it was a piece of Fiji that we could bring back with us.

For lunch, we opted for something a little different – pizza at Sinbad Pizza. I had heard whispers that it was the best pizza in Fiji, and I was eager to put that claim to the test. The restaurant had a laid-back vibe, with a simple patio overlooking the ocean. We ordered a couple of pizzas, one Hawaiian and one Capricciosa, and waited with anticipation. As soon as the pizzas arrived, I knew we were in for a treat. The crust was thin and crispy, the toppings were generous, and the flavors were simply divine. Sailosi devoured his slices with gusto, declaring it the best pizza he had ever tasted. Even Mere, who is usually a bit of a pizza snob, admitted that it was exceptional. As we savored each bite, I couldn't help but think about Mustafa Katab, the owner of Sinbad Pizza, and his journey from playing soccer in Fiji to creating what many consider the best pizza in the country. It’s stories like these that make Fiji so special – the unexpected journeys and the passion that people pour into their craft.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to check out Coral Coast Adventures (Fiji) Limited. While there, we had an amazing time riding horses along the beach. I haven't ridden a horse in ages, but it was like riding a bike. Mere and Sailosi also had a blast, and we were able to take some amazing photos of the beautiful scenery. I was reminded of my younger days when I would ride horses through the countryside of Navua with my cousins. It felt good to share that experience with my family here on the Coral Coast. We explored the lush landscapes and stunning coastlines, and I felt a deep connection to the land of my birth. The kids loved it, and it was a perfect way to spend the afternoon.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Beach Bar And Grill for dinner. Located on the Sunset Strip in Korotogo, the restaurant had a charming ambiance, with stunning views of the ocean. We were seated at a table right by the water, and the gentle sea breeze added to the relaxed atmosphere. The menu was a fusion of Fijian, Thai, and French cuisines, and we were spoiled for choice. I opted for the fresh seafood platter, while Mere chose the flavorful Thai green curry, and Sailosi went for the classic fish and chips. Each dish was expertly prepared and bursting with flavors. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to head over to Hydro Sports Fiji (Shangri-La) for some water sports action. Sailosi is especially excited about trying out jet skiing, while Mere is looking forward to relaxing on the beach. We'll also be trying out some new restaurants, including Kanu Gastropub Suva for breakfast, Vahavu Restaurant for lunch, and Shivas Wine & Dine for dinner. And of course, we'll be making a stop at The Beach Club Wailoaloa for some evening drinks. It's going to be another day filled with adventure and delicious food!

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share my homeland with my family. The Coral Coast has a way of capturing your heart, with its stunning beauty, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture. It’s a place where memories are made, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Spending the day with Mere and Sailosi, sharing stories and laughter, made me realize how important it is to reconnect with our roots. It's not just about seeing the sights, but about experiencing the culture and creating lasting memories. Fiji, with its stunning landscapes and warm-hearted people, is the perfect place to do just that. And as the day comes to a close, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Vinaka vakalevu, Fiji, for another unforgettable day.
