Kyoto's Cultural Treasures: A Day of Exploration

Today was a day of diving deep into Kyoto's rich tapestry of history, art, and natural beauty. From the majestic Nijo Castle to the whimsical Manga Museum and the serene Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, each location offered a unique glimpse into the heart of this captivating city. The blend of historical grandeur, artistic expression, and the delicate beauty of plum blossoms made for an unforgettable experience.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which was a delightful assortment of grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and pickles. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

First on the itinerary was Nijo Castle. As I approached the imposing structure, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at its historical significance. Built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period, Nijo Castle is a testament to the power and artistry of the era. I decided to rent an English audio guide to make sure I didn't miss any important details. Venturing further into the castle, I passed through the Chinese-style Karamon Gate, which led to the Ninomaru Palace. The palace served as the residence and office of the shogun during his visits to Kyoto. The interior of the Ninomaru Palace is a sight to behold, with its beautiful works of art and well-preserved architecture. I was particularly impressed by the 'nightingale floors,' designed to chirp when stepped upon, serving as an ingenious security measure against intruders.

Outside of the Ninomaru Palace extends the Ninomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden with a large pond, ornamental stones and manicured pine trees. I spent a good amount of time wandering through the garden, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beauty of the natural surroundings. The Honmaru (main circle of defense) was the site of a second palace complex and a five story castle keep. However, both structures were destroyed by fires in the 18th century and were never rebuilt. After the fall of the shogunate, an imperial residence was moved here from the Kyoto Imperial Palace where it remains today as the Honmaru Palace. I climbed up the stone foundation of the former castle keep, which offered views over the castle grounds.

After immersing myself in history, I decided to switch gears and visit the Kyoto International Manga Museum. As a software engineer with an appreciation for art and technology, I was intrigued by the idea of a museum dedicated to manga. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum is a celebration of Japanese comic book culture. The museum has information boards in English and manga available to read in various languages. The Wall of Manga filled with 50,000 books was impressive! You can read your favorite works there. In the Manga Expo corner, I found translated versions of manga and comics from around the world. I spent hours browsing the extensive collection, reading excerpts from various manga, and learning about the history and evolution of this unique art form. I even tried my hand at manga-styled drawings.

For lunch, I ventured to Goichi Pizza, a small restaurant known for its authentic stone-oven pizzas. Opting for a classic Margherita, I savored the chewy crust and fresh ingredients. It was a delightful change of pace from the traditional Japanese cuisine I had been enjoying.

My final stop for the day was Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, this shrine is particularly popular among students praying for academic success. However, what drew me here was the plum blossom garden. Luckily I had remembered to pack my light jacket, as it was a little chilly, but I forgot my umbrella and sunscreen! It was not raining, but the sun was strong. As I entered the shrine grounds, I was greeted by a breathtaking sight: hundreds of plum trees in full bloom, their delicate pink and white blossoms creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The air was filled with a sweet fragrance, and the gentle breeze rustled through the branches, creating a soothing melody. According to some sources, there are approximately 1,500 plum trees of 50 different varieties in its vast plum grove. The plum blossoms bloom from the beginning of January to the end of March, with different varieties blooming one after the other. I wandered through the garden, admiring the beauty of the plum blossoms and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to the hotel, I made a stop at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. Daimaru Kyoto Store is a must-visit destination for tourists seeking an authentic shopping experience. This department store combines an array of shops, including gift items, cosmetics, men's and women's clothing, and gourmet grocery options, making it a one-stop shop for all your needs. I picked up a few souvenirs for Lena and Sofia, as well as some local delicacies to take back to Berlin. I took advantage of the tax-free shopping for tourists by showing my passport.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. As a special treat to myself, I decided to splurge on a Kobe beef steak. The restaurant had a classy interior. The staff was showing the menu and explained about their meat. The chef cooked garlic chips as the first step. Next, he started to cook some vegetables such as zucchini and asparagus, and also other side dish (sweet potato and mushroom), to be eaten together with the beef. Finally, he started to cook the highlight dish, Kobe beef. The steak was cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with its rich and buttery flavor. It was an unforgettable culinary experience.
