Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto
Day 3: A Day of Shrines, Temples, and City Views in Kyoto
Exploring Kyoto's cultural heart: From Fushimi Inari's gates to Tofuku-ji's gardens and Kyoto Tower's panoramic views. A day of wonder!
Kyoto's Golden Thread: Shrines, Gardens, and Skyline Views
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto, a day where ancient traditions met modern perspectives. I set out early, eager to experience the city's most iconic landmarks, from the mesmerizing paths of Fushimi Inari Shrine to the serene gardens of Tofuku-ji Temple and the sweeping views from Kyoto Tower. Each location offered a unique lens through which to view this captivating city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. Finding the restaurant was a mini-adventure in itself, tucked away as it was. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere was very cozy. I opted for the set menu, eager to try a range of local dishes. It was a delightful start to a day packed with exploration. I made sure to remember the recommendation to mention in advance if you are vegan, as it helps the chef with preparations.

First on the agenda was the famed Fushimi Inari Shrine. As I approached, the sight of the seemingly endless vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountainside was breathtaking. The sheer scale of it all was impressive, and the vibrant color popped against the lush green backdrop of Mount Inari. I started my ascent, joining the throngs of visitors eager to experience this iconic landmark.

The hike was more challenging than I anticipated, but the higher I climbed, the more rewarding the experience became. The crowds thinned out, and I found myself immersed in a tranquil world of shrines, small shops, and stunning views. Each torii gate is a donation from a person or company, a testament to the shrine's importance in Japanese culture. The history of the shrine dates back to the 8th century. It is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, and has been a place where people pray for bountiful harvests, business prosperity, and the safety of their homes.
The journey through Fushimi Inari's torii gates is more than just a hike; it's a passage through time, tradition, and the enduring spirit of Kyoto.
Reaching the summit, I was rewarded with a panoramic vista of Kyoto sprawling beneath me. It was a moment of quiet reflection, a chance to appreciate the beauty and serenity of this ancient city. After soaking in the view, I began my descent, feeling a sense of accomplishment and awe.
Next, I headed to Tofuku-ji Temple, another of Kyoto's historical treasures. Founded in 1236, Tofuku-ji is known for its stunning Zen gardens, a blend of traditional and modern design. As I stepped through the temple gates, a sense of calm washed over me. The gardens, designed by Mirei Shigemori in the 1930s, were a masterclass in minimalist beauty. The rock arrangements, raked gravel, and moss patterns created a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

I wandered through the Abbot's Quarters Gardens, each offering a unique perspective. The Southern Garden featured large rocks symbolizing mythical islands, while the Northern Garden showcased a checkerboard pattern of paving stones and moss. The Eastern Garden, with its cylindrical foundation stones representing the Big Dipper constellation, was particularly striking. Lena would have loved this place, I thought, as the gardens have an artistic touch that would speak to her curator's soul.
The Tsutenkyo Bridge, a covered walkway spanning a valley of maple trees, was another highlight. Although it's not autumn, I could imagine the fiery colors that would engulf the valley in the fall. I took my time, absorbing the tranquility of the surroundings and marveling at the harmonious blend of nature and design. I made sure to visit the Sanmon Gate, the oldest Zen gate of its kind, dating back to 1425.
For lunch, I chose Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, drawn in by its reputation for serving some of the best tonkatsu in Kyoto. Finding the restaurant was a little tricky, tucked away in a small alleyway, but the search was well worth it. As I stepped inside, the aroma of fried pork cutlets filled the air, making my mouth water. I ordered the signature tonkatsu set, eager to experience this culinary delight.

The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, a testament to the chef's skill. The set came with rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables, a satisfying and comforting meal. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventure. I saw many tourists enjoying their meals here, which made me feel like I had picked a good spot.
My final stop for the day was Kyoto Tower, a modern landmark that offers panoramic views of the city. As I approached the tower, its towering presence was hard to miss. I bought a ticket to the observation deck and rode the elevator to the top, eager to see Kyoto from a different perspective. The observation deck stands 100 meters high and provides a fantastic panoramic view over the entire city. I used the free telescopes to get a closer look at some of Kyoto's famous landmarks.

From the observation deck, I could see the temples and shrines I had visited earlier in the day, as well as the sprawling cityscape stretching out to the horizon. It was a clear day, and I could even glimpse Osaka in the distance. The multilingual audio guides were informative, providing commentary on Kyoto's famous landmarks. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration, a chance to reflect on the beauty and history of this remarkable city. I could spot Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Toji Temple from up there.
As the sun began to set, I decided to treat myself to a special dinner at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its modern take on kaiseki cuisine. I had made a reservation well in advance, eager to experience this culinary gem. The restaurant's ambiance was elegant and refined, with a touch of contemporary flair. The staff was attentive and welcoming, guiding me through the elaborate kaiseki menu.

Each dish was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures. Chef Murata's innovative approach to traditional cuisine was evident in every bite, from the white miso-marinated egg yolk to the crab rice cooked with crab broth. The presentation was impeccable, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. It was an experience that transcended mere dining, a journey into the heart of Japanese culinary artistry. I chose one of the higher-priced menus, remembering the advice I read about how the quality of ingredients goes up with the price.
To cap off the evening, I ventured to The Common One Bar Kyoto, a hidden gem known for its expertly crafted cocktails. Tucked away in the Gion district, this bijou bar offered a serene escape from the bustling streets. The bar's ambiance was elegant and refined, with soft lighting and stunning design elements. I ordered the Vanilla Matcha Cocktail, a signature drink that blended traditional Japanese flavors with contemporary mixology techniques. It was the perfect nightcap, a harmonious blend of taste and atmosphere.

As I sipped my cocktail, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the ancient shrines to the modern skyline, Kyoto had captivated me with its beauty, history, and culinary delights. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this remarkable city, a place where tradition and innovation coexist in perfect harmony.
Tomorrow, I'm heading to Arashiyama to explore the bamboo forest, Tenryu-ji Temple, and the Iwatayama Monkey Park. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this enchanting city. I've heard the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is especially magical in the early morning, so I'm planning to get there as soon as possible. I'm also excited to see the monkeys at Iwatayama Monkey Park, though I'll be sure to keep my belongings close!
Lena and Sofia would have loved today's journey, I thought. Especially Sofia, as I think she would have enjoyed seeing the monkeys in Arashiyama.
Embark on a solo adventure to Kyoto, exploring its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, while enjoying a comfortable stay in the city center.
