Kanazawa: A Day of Art, Reflection, and Flavor
Today in Kanazawa was a journey for the senses, a blend of visual art, introspective moments, and delightful culinary experiences. It's amazing how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of memories. From thought-provoking exhibits to savory meals, every moment was a new discovery.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café. This charming café, with its Seattle-style ambiance, was just what I needed to start the day right. I savored a delicious breakfast sandwich and a cup of their expertly brewed coffee. The café's cozy interior, filled with vintage finds, made me feel right at home. It reminded me of the quirky cafes Isabela and I used to frequent back in Kingston. It’s funny how a place so far from home can evoke such familiar feelings.

With a caffeine buzz and a full stomach, I headed to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. The museum's unique circular design immediately caught my eye, resembling a UFO landed in the middle of the city. The glass walls and multiple entrances created an open and inviting atmosphere. Inside, I was captivated by the diverse range of exhibits.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
One of the highlights was Leandro Erlich's The Swimming Pool, an installation that plays with perception, making it seem as though people are underwater. I spent a good amount of time observing this piece, marveling at the way it challenged my understanding of reality. Another standout was Patrick Blanc's Green Bridge, a living wall of plants that added a touch of nature to the museum's interior. As someone who appreciates architecture that blends seamlessly with its surroundings, I found this piece particularly inspiring. The museum truly lived up to its reputation as a hub for contemporary art.
After immersing myself in the world of contemporary art, I sought a moment of quiet contemplation at the D.T. Suzuki Museum. Dedicated to the life and works of the Buddhist philosopher D.T. Suzuki, the museum offered a serene escape from the bustling city. The minimalist design, with its clean lines and open spaces, encouraged introspection. I wandered through the three wings of the museum, each connected by peaceful corridors. The Water Mirror Garden, a reflective pond surrounded by stone and greenery, was especially calming. I sat by the water, lost in thought, reflecting on Suzuki's teachings and their relevance to my own life.

For lunch, I decided to try The Godburger, a local hamburger shop known for its juicy patties and homemade buns. The name itself is quite a claim, and I was curious to see if it lived up to the hype. I ordered their classic cheeseburger, and I must say, it was indeed divine. The patty was cooked to perfection, and the bun was soft and flavorful. It was a satisfying and indulgent meal that hit the spot. I can see why it’s considered one of the best burgers in Kanazawa.

Before dinner, I took some time to explore Kanazawa Loft. This department store offered a wide variety of goods, from stationery to household items. I picked up a few souvenirs for Mateus, knowing he'd appreciate the unique Japanese stationery. It's always fun to bring back little reminders of my travels for my family.

As evening approached, I made my way to Aashirwad, an Indian-Nepalese restaurant. Having lived in Canada for many years, I sometimes crave the flavors of home, and Indian cuisine often satisfies that longing. The restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere immediately put me at ease. I ordered a variety of dishes, including butter chicken, naan, and vegetable curry. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and the spices transported me back to Brazil. The chefs, who hail from Northern India, truly know their craft. It was a delightful culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Kanazawa has to offer. From its vibrant art scene to its serene gardens and delicious cuisine, the city has something for everyone. As a historical building restoration consultant, I am constantly inspired by the way different cultures preserve and celebrate their heritage, and Kanazawa is a shining example of this. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Myouryuji (Ninja Temple) and Oyama Shrine, eager to explore more of Kanazawa's historical and cultural treasures. I'm also looking forward to trying some local delicacies at Nyumba for breakfast, Iki-iki Tei for lunch and Kanazawa Temakizushi Coil for dinner. I might even check out FURANSU COCKTAIL BAR フランス for a nightcap. Until then, I bid you goodnight from this enchanting city.
The blend of modern and traditional is something I hope to bring back to my work, perhaps incorporating some of these design elements into my future restoration projects. For now, though, I'll simply savor the memories and look forward to new adventures.
It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel. The chance to immerse myself in new cultures, explore different perspectives, and create lasting memories is truly invaluable. And who knows, maybe one day I'll bring Isabela and Mateus back to Kanazawa to experience its wonders firsthand.
