Immerse yourself in Kanazawa's beauty: Explore Kenroku-en, savor local cuisine, and discover Ishikawa's crafts on a solo adventure.
First Impressions: Kanazawa's Timeless Charm
Today marked the start of my solo adventure in Kanazawa, and what a day it has been! As a historical building restoration consultant, I often find myself drawn to places where history whispers through the architecture and landscapes. Kanazawa, with its blend of meticulously preserved gardens and rich cultural heritage, immediately captivated me. It felt like stepping back in time, yet with a vibrant, modern pulse.
My journey began with a hearty breakfast at Plat Home - Kanazawa Kitchen. The restaurant is set in a renovated Japanese storehouse over 100 years old. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff made me feel instantly at home. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Kenroku-en: A Stroll Through Perfection
After breakfast, I headed straight to Kenroku-en, one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens. The garden's name, meaning Garden of the Six Sublimities, refers to the six attributes deemed essential for the perfect garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water sources, and broad views. I must say, it lived up to its name and more. Wandering through the meticulously manicured paths, I was struck by the harmony and balance of the design. The Kasumigaike Pond, with its iconic Kotoji-style lantern, was particularly enchanting.

The beauty of Kenroku-en lies not just in its perfect design, but in the sense of tranquility and harmony it evokes.
The early summer flowers were in full bloom, adding splashes of color to the lush greenery. I was particularly taken by the irises, their delicate purple hues contrasting beautifully with the verdant landscape. I spent hours simply wandering, soaking in the serene atmosphere and capturing the beauty with my camera. It was easy to lose myself in the peaceful surroundings, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I even caught sight of some fireflies near the Tatsumi Waterway, a magical experience that felt like a dream. I am very excited about the possibility of the night illumination, which I read is a rare event.
Kanazawa Castle Park: A Glimpse into Samurai History
Just a short walk from Kenroku-en lies Kanazawa Castle Park, a testament to the city's rich samurai history. The castle, once home to the powerful Maeda clan, has been extensively restored, offering a fascinating glimpse into feudal Japan. I explored the Ishikawa-mon Gate, an Important Cultural Property, and marveled at the intricate stonework and imposing architecture.

The park itself is a sprawling green space, perfect for a leisurely stroll. I learned that the castle is known as the “Stone Wall Museum” because of the different types of stone walls. The reconstruction of the Kahoku-mon Gate was particularly impressive. The attention to detail and the use of traditional construction techniques truly transported me back in time. I also visited the Gyokusen'in-maru Garden, which was lit according to seasonal themes.
As I wandered through the park, I imagined what life must have been like during the Edo period, when samurai roamed these grounds. It was a humbling experience, connecting with the history and heritage of this remarkable city.
A Culinary Interlude: Kourin Sushi
By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite. Based on some recommendations, I decided to try Kourin Sushi, a local sushi restaurant known for its fresh, high-quality fish. It was a small place, with just a few tables and counter seats, but the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I opted for the chef's choice sushi set, and I was not disappointed. The fish was incredibly fresh, practically melting in my mouth. The chef's unique take on sushi, with subtle yet delightful flavor combinations, was a true culinary revelation. The tuna and shrimp were my favorites.

I had a delightful conversation with the chef, who shared some insights into the local ingredients and the art of sushi making. It was a truly authentic and memorable dining experience. I learned that the restaurant sources its ingredients from Omicho Market. The restaurant is conveniently located near Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle Park.
Shopping for Souvenirs: Ishikawa Local Products Center
In the afternoon, I decided to explore the Ishikawa Local Products Center, a treasure trove of local crafts and delicacies. This center is next to Kenrokuen Garden. From exquisite lacquerware and delicate ceramics to regional sake and traditional sweets, the center offered a glimpse into the artistic heart of Ishikawa Prefecture.

I was particularly fascinated by the Kaga Yuzen silk dyeing technique, renowned for its intricate patterns and vibrant colors. I spent hours browsing the various shops, admiring the craftsmanship and learning about the local traditions. I even participated in a wagashi making class, where I learned to create my own traditional Japanese sweets. It was a fun and rewarding experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the artistry and skill involved.
I also picked up some souvenirs for Isabela and Mateus, knowing they would appreciate the unique and authentic gifts. I was told that the center is the epicenter of the prefecture's traditional treasures.
Dinner at Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme: A Culinary Masterpiece
As the day drew to a close, I prepared for my final adventure: dinner at Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme, a French restaurant known for its innovative cuisine and artistic presentation. This restaurant has earned Two Michelin stars. The restaurant is near the Sai River. From what I read, the restaurant uses seasonal and local ingredients.

The restaurant itself was a work of art, with a minimalist yet elegant decor. The menu was an omakase (chef's choice) course, each dish a surprise and a delight. The chef's creativity and attention to detail were evident in every bite, with flavors and textures that danced on my palate. The presentation was equally stunning, each plate a miniature work of art.
The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable. They explained each dish with passion and pride, enhancing the overall dining experience. It was a truly unforgettable meal, a testament to the culinary artistry of Kanazawa.
Reflections on Day One
As I walked back to Yuyaruru Saisai, my hotel for the next few nights, I couldn't help but smile. My first day in Kanazawa had been nothing short of magical. From the serene beauty of Kenroku-en to the culinary delights of Kourin Sushi and Installation Table ENSO L'asymetrie du calme, I had experienced the best of what this city has to offer. And knowing that the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival is held every June, I felt lucky to be here during such a vibrant time.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Higashi Chaya District and the Nomura-ke Samurai Heritage Residence, eager to uncover more of Kanazawa's hidden gems. I may also check out Kohaku Bar [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I have a feeling this solo journey will be one for the books.
I am also thinking about the Yuzen Lanterns floated along the scenic Asano River. I read about it in preparation for this trip. I will need to check if this event will take place during my stay.
Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about immersing oneself in new experiences and connecting with different cultures. Kanazawa, with its timeless charm and warm hospitality, has already stolen a piece of my heart.
