Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Arashiyama. Wander through bamboo forests, explore ancient temples, and savor local flavors.
Whispers in the Bamboo
Today, I ventured into the heart of Arashiyama, a district on the outskirts of Kyoto that has captivated visitors for centuries. As a historical building restoration consultant, I was eager to see how the area seamlessly blends its natural beauty with historical and cultural landmarks. I was especially excited to experience the famed bamboo forest and the serene Tenryu-ji Temple.
The train ride to Arashiyama was smooth, and as I stepped off, the air felt crisper, a welcome change from the city. The weather in Kyoto this February has been quite mild, but Arashiyama had a certain freshness to it, a hint of the mountains nearby. I made sure to pack an umbrella, remembering my forgotten one from the trip essentials, but thankfully, the skies were clear today. I decided to start my exploration with the iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.

As I entered the bamboo grove, I was immediately enveloped in a world of green. Towering stalks of bamboo reached towards the sky, creating a mesmerizing canopy overhead. The sunlight filtered through the dense foliage, casting dappled shadows on the path. The air was still and quiet, save for the gentle rustling of the bamboo leaves in the breeze. It was a truly magical experience, a moment of serene connection with nature. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this enchanting place, but no image could truly do it justice. I thought about Mateus and Isabela, how much they would have loved walking through this forest with me, their laughter echoing amidst the bamboo.
The beauty of Arashiyama lies not just in its scenery, but in the profound sense of peace it instills in those who wander through it.
Leaving the bamboo forest, I made my way to Tenryu-ji Temple, a Zen temple of great historical significance. Founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji to honor Emperor Go-Daigo, the temple is ranked first among Kyoto's Five Great Zen Temples. As I walked through the temple grounds, I was struck by the exquisite architecture and the meticulously manicured gardens. The Sogenchi Garden, created by Muso Soseki, is a masterpiece of Japanese garden design, seamlessly blending the temple with the surrounding landscape. The garden incorporates the surrounding hills of Kameyama and Arashiyama, using a technique known as *shakkei*, or borrowed scenery. I spent some time simply sitting on a bench, contemplating the beauty and tranquility of the garden, and appreciating the artistry and craftsmanship that went into its creation. I could see the influence of Zen Buddhism in every detail, a harmonious balance between nature and human design.

Inside the Hojo, the main building, I admired the image of Shakyamuni Buddha, a designated Important Cultural Property. The atmosphere was serene, conducive to meditation and introspection. I also visited the Hatto, or Dharma Hall, which features images of Shakyamuni Buddha and his two chief bodhisattva disciples. The intricate wooden carvings and painted sliding doors were truly stunning, testaments to the skill and artistry of Japanese craftsmen. The temple has faced numerous challenges over the centuries, including fires and wars, but it has been rebuilt and restored to its former glory, a symbol of resilience and perseverance.
After immersing myself in the tranquility of Tenryu-ji Temple, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me that it was time for lunch. I had heard about Fujiya, Kyo-komono Kinugasa and Yasakadori Enraku, but I was in the mood for something a bit different. I decided to explore the area for vegetarian or vegan options. I stumbled upon Musubi Cafe, a charming little place just outside the main area in Arashiyama. It had vegan options on the menu such as curry, taco rice, and pasta. They use locally sourced ingredients and provide dishes that are “gentle on the mind and body”. I opted for the chickpea and tomato curry lunch combo, and it was absolutely delicious, a perfect blend of flavors and spices. It was a delightful culinary experience that left me feeling satisfied and energized for the rest of the day.
With my appetite sated, I decided to indulge in some shopping. I hopped on a train to Shijo Kawaramachi, a vibrant shopping district in central Kyoto. The area is a mix of modern, high-end fashion shops and stores with centuries of history selling traditional Kyoto crafts and specialty foods. I strolled along Shijo Street, browsing through the various shops and department stores. I found a beautiful *furoshiki*, a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, at a small shop specializing in textiles. I also picked up some *matcha* tea and sweets for Isabela and Mateus, knowing they would appreciate the taste of Kyoto.

Shijo Kawaramachi is centered around the intersection of Shijo and Kawaramachi streets. Two of the four corners of the intersection are occupied by department stores: Takashimaya at the southwest corner and Kyoto Marui at the southeast corner. Kyoto Marui opened in 2011 replacing Hankyu Department Store, which closed in August 2010. The underground station connects to department stores such as Takashimaya, which has an eclectic food market on its basement floor.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences in Arashiyama and Shijo Kawaramachi. I had immersed myself in the natural beauty of the bamboo forest, explored the historical and cultural significance of Tenryu-ji Temple, and indulged in the culinary delights and shopping opportunities of Kyoto. It was a day of contrasts, a blend of tranquility and vibrancy, history and modernity. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the unique charm and character of Kyoto, a city that continues to captivate and inspire me.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Heian Shrine, Philosopher's Path and Nanzen-ji Temple. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this fascinating city.
