A Day of Horses and Holy Paths

Today in Ponte de Lima was a delightful blend of cultural experiences, from the elegance of equestrian sports to the serene reflections along the ancient pilgrim trails. The town's unique charm shone through every activity, making it a day to remember. I started my day with a hearty breakfast and ended it with a nightcap at a local bar.

My day began with a visit to the Ponte de Lima destino equestre internacional. I must admit, I was intrigued. I've always appreciated the grace and power of horses, though my experience is limited to seeing them from afar. The event was well underway when I arrived, the air buzzing with excitement. The precision and skill of the riders were impressive, and the energy of the crowd was infectious. It was fascinating to see the dedication and artistry involved in equestrian sports. I learned that Ponte de Lima has a strong equestrian tradition, hosting various national and international competitions throughout the year. The events are often held at Expolima, a venue known for its excellent facilities. I even learned that the Ponte de Lima Horse Fair is a major event, attracting visitors and breeders from all over. It seems my visit coincided with some smaller local events, which were still quite a spectacle!

The journey of a lifetime isn't about the destination, but the experiences and self-discoveries along the way.

After immersing myself in the equestrian world, I decided to explore the Caminho Português de Santiago Ponte de Lima. As someone fascinated by history and cultural anthropology, walking a part of this ancient pilgrim route was an opportunity I couldn't miss. The path was well-marked, guiding me through peaceful vineyards and charming rural landscapes. I imagined the countless pilgrims who had walked this same path over centuries, each with their own stories and intentions. It was a humbling and reflective experience, connecting me to something larger than myself. I learned that Ponte de Lima is a significant point on the Camino Portugués, often referred to as Portugal's oldest village, enchanting pilgrims with its rich heritage. The walk offered a serene atmosphere, combining the cultural allure of Ponte de Lima with the raw beauty of nature. I only walked a small section, but it gave me a taste of the full pilgrimage experience, which stretches over 155 km and 10 days from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. Maybe one day I'll walk the entire route. It certainly gave me something to ponder.

For breakfast, I ventured to Restaurante Astro, a local spot known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The reviews I had read mentioned a varied menu, and I was eager to try some local specialties. I settled on a hearty plate of *Bacalhau à Astro*, which was absolutely delicious. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and efficient. It was the perfect way to start a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals my *abuela* used to make back in Trinidad. Simple food, made with love.

Lunch was at Gaio, a contemporary restaurant praised for its authentic Portuguese cuisine. The location was perfect, right by the Mercado Municipal. I opted for the *Arroz de Sarrabulho*, a local dish consisting of pork, sausage, and rice. The portions were generous, very much in the Portuguese style, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. The staff were courteous, and the service was terrific. I enjoyed a glass of local wine with my meal, soaking in the lively atmosphere of the restaurant. It was a delightful culinary experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Ponte de Lima. I’ve always loved trying new foods, and this was definitely one to write home about. I'll have to tell Isabella about it when I get back to Edmonton.

Dinner took me to Boteca, a restaurant recommended for its local cuisine and relaxed atmosphere. I decided to try the *Francesinha*, a Portuguese sandwich originating from Porto. It was a hearty and flavorful dish, perfect for a satisfying dinner. The restaurant had a lively ambiance, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was a great way to end a day of exploring Ponte de Lima. I must say, I was impressed with the culinary scene in Ponte de Lima. Each restaurant offered a unique experience, showcasing the best of Portuguese cuisine. It's safe to say that I ate well today!

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Chusso Bar, a local spot known for its gin and spectacular ambiance. The bar had a great vibe, with friendly staff and good music. I enjoyed a gin and tonic, chatting with some locals and soaking in the atmosphere. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing. The prices were affordable, and the service was excellent. I can see why this bar is rated highly by locals and tourists alike. It reminded me a bit of some of the pubs back in Edmonton, but with a distinct Portuguese flair.
