Today was all about stepping back in time and soaking in the incredible views that Norway has to offer. I’ve always been fascinated by how landscapes shape culture, and today’s journey through Gudvangen was a perfect example of that. From the winding roads to the echoes of Viking life, every moment felt like a page torn from a history book. I was eager to share these experiences with you all!

Our day began, as usual, with breakfast at the Gudvangen Fjordtell. The buffet was a welcome sight, fueling us up for what promised to be a day of exploration. Lena, as always, started with a strong coffee, while I opted for some traditional Norwegian brown cheese on rye bread. It’s funny how much I’ve come to enjoy this local delicacy – a far cry from the flavors of Turrialba, but a delightful experience nonetheless.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to tackle the Gamle Aurlandsvegen, also known as the old Aurland road. This historic route, stretching for 18 kilometers, promised stunning views and a glimpse into Norway’s past. The drive itself was an adventure, with hairpin turns and steep inclines that tested our little rental car. But every twist and turn revealed a new, breathtaking vista. The Aurlandsfjord sparkled in the sunlight, framed by towering mountains and lush valleys.

We stopped at several viewpoints along the way, each offering a unique perspective of the landscape. I couldn’t help but imagine the countless travelers who had traversed this road over the centuries, their stories etched into the very stones beneath our tires. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. I made sure to take tons of photos, hoping to capture even a fraction of the beauty that surrounded us. By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We decided to stop at Viking Kroa for a bite to eat. This cafeteria-style restaurant promised a taste of traditional Scandinavian cuisine, and it did not disappoint. I opted for the fish, while Lena tried the lamb sausages. The portions were generous, and the flavors were hearty and satisfying. As we ate, we enjoyed the beautiful view of the surrounding area, soaking in the atmosphere of this unique eatery. After lunch, we decided to explore the souvenir shop in Gudvangen. I was on the hunt for a small memento to remind me of our time here, while Lena was hoping to find a unique gift for her sister. The shop was filled with handcrafted items, from wooden carvings to knitted sweaters, each showcasing the skill and artistry of local artisans. I finally settled on a small, hand-painted troll figurine, while Lena found a beautiful silver brooch inspired by Norse mythology.

Before dinner, we took some time to simply wander around Gudvangen, soaking in the atmosphere of this charming village. The village is nestled at the end of the Nærøyfjord, which is one of two Norwegian fjords listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Nærøyfjord, along with the Flåm Railway, is one of the number one sights in the area. The surrounding mountains created a sense of awe and wonder, reminding us of the power and beauty of nature. We watched as boats sailed across the fjord, their wakes leaving shimmering trails in the water. It was a scene of perfect tranquility, a moment of peace that I knew I would cherish for years to come. I thought about my life back in Berlin, the hustle and bustle of the city, and felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to escape and reconnect with nature.

For dinner, we chose Café Gudvangen, a charming spot known for its excellent coffee and delicious baguettes. The café is beautifully designed in Viking style with rustic wooden benches and a cozy fireplace. I had heard good things about their pizza, and I was eager to give it a try. Lena, however, opted for a traditional Norwegian dish – a hearty stew made with lamb and root vegetables. The pizza was delicious, with a crispy crust and flavorful toppings. Lena raved about her stew, declaring it the perfect comfort food for a chilly evening. As we ate, we chatted about our favorite moments of the day, reliving the stunning views and the sense of history that permeated every corner of Gudvangen. The coffee was great, and the cakes were so enticing that we decided to order them.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the experiences we had shared. The Gamle Aurlandsvegen had transported us to another time, allowing us to glimpse the beauty and challenges of Norway’s past. The Viking Kroa had nourished our bodies with hearty, traditional fare , while Café Gudvangen had warmed our souls with its cozy atmosphere and delicious food. And the souvenir shop had provided us with tangible reminders of our time here, tokens of our journey that we would carry with us long after we had left.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Laegdafossen waterfall and Odnesfossen [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I am excited to see more of Norway’s natural beauty and to continue learning about its rich cultural heritage. But for now, I am content to simply relax and savor the memories of this incredible day. I am so glad that Lena is here with me to share in these experiences, her presence adding a layer of joy and connection to every moment. It’s these shared adventures that make our marriage so strong, a bond forged in the fires of discovery and mutual appreciation. I also need to remember to buy some sunglasses and an extra memory card for my camera.
