Finding Peace and Treasures in Saint-Louis
Today was a day of contrasts, seamlessly blending the spiritual with the everyday hustle and bustle of local life. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such diverse experiences, leaving you feeling both grounded and invigorated. From the serene atmosphere of the Grande Mosquée de Saint-Louis to the vibrant chaos of Marche Sor, Saint-Louis continues to surprise and delight.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Tangana. I decided to try the Tiep Rouge Boeuf. It was a flavorful way to start the day, fueling me up for the adventures ahead. Greta would have loved this place, with its blend of local and international flavors; I'll have to remember to try and recreate this dish for her back in Berlin. I made a mental note to try the bissap juice next time, as I've heard it's incredibly refreshing.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to visit the Grande Mosquée de Saint-Louis. As I approached, the mosque's architecture was striking against the clear blue sky. The Grande Mosquée, with its unique blend of Islamic and colonial design elements, stands as a testament to the city's layered history. I learned that the mosque was constructed in 1846 and is known for its minaret, which once housed a clock and a bell. Some say the bell was used to call Muslims to prayer to avoid disturbing the French residents during colonial times, but the accuracy of that claim is debated.
The beauty of Saint-Louis lies in its ability to weave together the sacred and the mundane, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that resonate long after you've left.
Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by a sense of peace and reverence. The interior was spacious, with beautiful decorations adorning the walls. The mosque can accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers. I took my time to admire the craftsmanship and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. Although I am not Muslim, I felt a deep sense of connection to something greater than myself. It was a reminder that, regardless of our backgrounds, we are all united in our search for meaning and purpose. The experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of faith and community.
Afterward, I decided to immerse myself in the local culture with a visit to Marche Sor. It was a complete contrast to the serenity of the mosque, but equally captivating. The market was a riot of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors hawked their wares, from fresh produce and spices to clothing and handicrafts. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way.

Navigating through the crowded aisles, I was struck by the energy and vibrancy of the market. Locals bartered for the best prices, children darted between stalls, and the air was filled with the aroma of exotic spices. It was a feast for the senses and a photographer's dream. I managed to pick up a few souvenirs for Greta and some friends back in Berlin – colorful fabrics and intricately carved wooden trinkets that I hope will remind them of Senegal. I probably overpaid a bit, but the experience was worth it.
For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Le SEDOR, enticed by its reputation for local cuisine. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere. I opted for a traditional Senegalese dish – a flavorful rice and fish creation that was both satisfying and delicious. Based on some reviews, this place is open 24 hours.

With the afternoon sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, I made my way to Maison d’Hôtel Sunu Keur. This guesthouse is known for its architecture. Sunu Keur means our house in Wolof, and the hotel certainly lived up to its name. The building was a stunning example of Saint-Louisian architecture, with a beautiful patio, arches, balconies, and a terrace. Though I didn't stay there, I enjoyed the ambiance and took some photos.

Finally, as the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Siki Rio. This restaurant is known for its tapas and vegan options. I savored each bite, reflecting on the day's experiences. The marinated artichokes were a particular highlight. Siki Rio seemed like a great place to unwind and enjoy the evening. The owner was very helpful in finding vegan options.

As I walked back to my accommodation, the sounds of Saint-Louis began to fade, replaced by a sense of contentment. Today had been a journey for the soul, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with different cultures and finding common ground. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visits to the Grande Mosquée de Balacoss and Ndar Ndar House, I am filled with anticipation for what new experiences await. And perhaps I'll find time to relax at Flag Embuscade Bar in the evening. I’m also reminded that I need to pick up those sunglasses and a power adapter that I forgot.
Saint-Louis continues to captivate me with its unique blend of history, culture, and spirituality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I found myself reflecting on the day while listening to some music. Duran Duran's Rio came on, and it made me think about how travel can be like a great song – a mix of melodies and rhythms that capture a moment in time.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Grande Mosquée de Balacoss and Ndar Ndar House, hoping to uncover more of Saint-Louis's hidden gems. And who knows, maybe I'll even find a quiet spot to practice my German idioms. After all, every day is an opportunity to learn and grow, both on the road and at home. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Chez Awa Restaurant, Restaurant Sant Yalla, and Restaurant Djamila, and maybe even unwinding with a drink at Flag Embuscade Bar. It's all about embracing the unknown and savoring every moment.
The people here are so warm and welcoming, and I’m constantly amazed by their resilience and resourcefulness. It’s a humbling experience that reminds me of the importance of community and the power of human connection. Maybe Greta and I can come back here together someday. That would be wonderful.
