Kyoto's Quiet Charms: Gardens, Crafts, and Cocktails

Today, on the twelfth day of my solo journey through Kyoto, I sought to experience the city's quieter, more contemplative side. Leaving behind the bustling temples and crowded tourist spots, I ventured into the serene landscapes of a botanical garden and the intricate world of traditional crafts. It was a day of discovery, a chance to appreciate the subtle beauty that Kyoto so effortlessly offers.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi. Fuelled up with a traditional Japanese breakfast, I set out for the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Stepping into the gardens felt like entering another world. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers. The gardens were meticulously maintained, showcasing a diverse array of plant species from around the world. It was a welcome change from the urban landscape, a peaceful sanctuary where I could reconnect with nature.

Wandering through the themed gardens, I was particularly captivated by the cherry blossom section, though most of the blossoms were now gone. Instead, I was greeted by tulips and other vibrant flowers that painted the landscape with vivid colors. The Craft Marche was also underway, with many stalls selling handcrafted goods set against the backdrop of Kyoto's Botanical Gardens. It was a unique day out with fantastic stalls selling handcrafted goods.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its grand temples and historic sites, but also in the quiet corners where nature and art intertwine.

After a refreshing morning in the gardens, I made my way to the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design. As someone who appreciates the artistry and skill behind handmade objects, I was eager to explore the museum's collection. The museum is located in the Miyako Messe, and I soon found myself immersed in the world of traditional Japanese crafts.

The exhibitions showcased a wide range of crafts, from ceramics and textiles to lacquerware and metalwork. Each piece was a testament to the dedication and expertise of the artisans who created them. I was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the Kyoto yuzen dyeing and the delicate beauty of the Kyo-sashimono wood crafts. There were craft demonstrations happening, with artisans showing how they use traditional techniques to create unique craftworks.

For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Teppanyaki Minami. The chef's skillful performance, combined with the delicious food, made for a memorable culinary experience. It was a delightful interlude between my explorations of Kyoto's cultural treasures.

As evening approached, I headed to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored traditional building, offered a blend of Italian cuisine and Japanese aesthetics. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the food was exquisite. I savored each bite, appreciating the chef's creativity and attention to detail. The restaurant was once the residence of the renowned Japanese painter Seihou Takeuchi, built in 1929, and the building and gardens were stunning.

To cap off the evening, I ventured into the Kyoto Star Bar. The bar had a cozy, welcoming vibe. The bartender was a true artist, crafting cocktails with precision and care. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, which was highly recommended, and savored the complex flavors as I reflected on the day's adventures. The master was dressed in a kimono, and the space was filled with Kyoto-like charm.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tō-ji Temple and Kyoto Tower, and perhaps do some shopping at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. As my trip nears its end, I am trying to soak in as much of Kyoto as possible. Each day brings new discoveries and deeper appreciation for this captivating city.

Kyoto has a way of slowing you down, inviting you to observe the world around you with a sense of wonder and appreciation. It's a city that nourishes the soul, leaving you feeling refreshed and inspired. As I prepare for my final days here, I am grateful for the experiences I have had and the memories I have made. Until tomorrow!
