Exploring the Historical Charms of Salzburg
Day 7: Farewell Salzburg: A Day of Heights and High Fashion
Concluding our Salzburg adventure with breathtaking mountain views, elegant palaces, and a stylish shopping spree at designer outlets.
A Final Salzburg Symphony
As our week-long exploration of Salzburg draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that this city offers. Today was all about soaking in those last unforgettable moments, from soaring to new heights to indulging in a bit of retail therapy. Salzburg, you've been a dream!
Our final day began, as many others did, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Blaue Gans Salzburg Gasthaus. While some reviews mention inconsistent service, we found it charming and efficient. The traditional Austrian fare set us up perfectly for a day of adventure. Katarína particularly enjoyed the pastries, declaring them the best she'd had all week. I opted for a hearty helping of *Wurst* and *Semmel*, a simple pleasure that always hits the spot. It's funny how the little things become so memorable when you're traveling.
First on our agenda was a trip up the Untersberg. The Untersberg, straddling the border between Austria and Germany, is a mountain that beckoned us with promises of panoramic views. The Untersbergbahn, a modern cable car, whisked us swiftly to the summit. The winter landscape was breathtaking, with snow-covered peaks stretching as far as the eye could see. The crisp mountain air invigorated us as we stepped onto the summit plateau. I took a moment to capture the vista with my camera, trying to encapsulate the sheer grandeur of the Alps.

We weren't alone in our admiration; the summit was bustling with visitors from all over the world, many of whom were Salzburg fans from Italy, as I overheard. While skiing isn't really our thing, many people were gearing up for a thrilling descent on the slopes. We, however, were content to simply soak in the view and enjoy the winter atmosphere.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After descending from the Untersberg, we made our way to Schloss Leopoldskron. This stunning Rococo palace, set on the Leopoldskroner Weiher lake, exuded an air of elegance and tranquility. It's hard to believe that such a serene place is just a stone's throw from the city center. The palace is renowned for its connection to the movie *The Sound of Music*, and it's easy to see why it was chosen as a filming location. The picturesque setting and grand architecture create a truly magical atmosphere.

We strolled around the pond, taking in the views of the palace and the surrounding mountains. I learned that winter weddings are possible at Schloss Leopoldskron, and I can only imagine how enchanting it must be to exchange vows in such a fairytale setting. The palace has twelve individually appointed suites, each exuding its own palace charm. Maybe one day, Katarína and I will renew our vows here!
Next, we decided to ascend the Mönchsberg Elevator. This modern lift, located in the heart of the Old Town, whisked us up through the mountain in a matter of seconds. Emerging at the top, we were greeted with yet another breathtaking view of Salzburg. From this vantage point, we could see the entire city laid out before us, with the Salzach River winding its way through the center and the Hohensalzburg Fortress perched majestically on the Festungsberg.

The Mönchsberg is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, and it's easy to see why. The numerous walking trails offer stunning views and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Even in winter, the Mönchsberg has its charm. I read that in winter, small hills provide perfect spots for sledging, while in summer, secret paths, mysterious caves, and thrilling lookouts transform the Mönchsberg into a giant playground.
After taking in the views from the Mönchsberg, Katarína declared it was time for some retail therapy. So, we hopped on a bus to the Designer Outlet Salzburg. Located just a short distance from the city center, this outlet mall is home to a wide array of designer brands, all offering discounts of up to 70%. Katarína was in her element, browsing through the racks of clothing and accessories. I, on the other hand, found a comfortable bench and people-watched while she shopped.

The Designer Outlet Salzburg is designed to look like a traditional shopping arcade, with cobblestone streets and charming storefronts. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can take a break from shopping. I learned that holders of the Salzburg Card enjoy yet another shopping advantage: Show your Salzburg Card at the outlet center's information desk to receive your 10% Fashion Passport!
After a successful shopping spree, we were both feeling a bit peckish. For our final dinner in Salzburg, we chose The Glass Garden, a Michelin-starred restaurant located in the Hotel Schloss Mönchstein. This restaurant is known for its innovative Austrian cuisine and its stunning views of the city.

The Glass Garden lived up to its reputation. The ambiance was elegant and sophisticated, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Salzburg. The interior design was tasteful, featuring a striking glass sculpture by David Chihuly. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of exquisite dishes showcasing the best of Austrian cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the staff was knowledgeable and attentive.
Each dish was a work of art, both in terms of presentation and flavor. The chef, Simon Wagner, clearly has a passion for his craft, and his creativity shone through in every course. Katarína particularly enjoyed the vegan options, noting that they were just as delicious and inventive as the non-vegan dishes. I was impressed by the wine list, which featured a curated selection of Austrian wines.
As we savored our final courses, we reflected on our week in Salzburg. We had explored historical sites, attended classical music concerts, and hiked in the Alps. We had sampled traditional Austrian cuisine and indulged in a bit of retail therapy. But most of all, we had created memories that would last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we head back to Potsdam, filled with stories and experiences to share. Salzburg, you have captured our hearts. I'm sure we'll be back someday to explore more of your hidden gems. Until then, *Auf Wiedersehen*!
I'm already thinking about our next adventure. Perhaps a return to Slovakia to explore my roots, or maybe a trip to Italy to indulge in some *dolce vita*. The possibilities are endless!
Before heading back to the hotel, we savored a final *Melange* at a cozy cafe, watching the snow gently fall outside. The perfect end to a perfect day. As we packed our bags, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness. But I know that we'll carry the spirit of Salzburg with us, wherever we go. It's a city that truly nourishes the soul.
As I reflect on our journey, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about discovering new aspects of ourselves. It's about stepping outside of our comfort zones, embracing the unknown, and connecting with different cultures. And it's about creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Our flight leaves early tomorrow, so it's time to get some rest. Thank you for joining us on this incredible adventure. Stay tuned for more travel stories from around the world!
And as I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the echoes of Mozart's music and the clatter of horse-drawn carriages on the cobblestone streets. Salzburg, you're a city that truly knows how to leave a lasting impression.
