Day 7: Whispers of Hornstrandir: A Day of Arctic Foxes and Midnight Sun
Immerse yourself in Hornstrandir's magic: Arctic fox encounters, midnight sun hikes, and unforgettable moments in Iceland's wild heart.
Embracing the Untamed Beauty of Hornstrandir
Today was a day of pure, unadulterated wilderness. Hornstrandir, you've completely stolen my heart. From the moment we stepped out of our tent this morning, the landscape unfolded before us like a dream—a rugged, breathtaking dream. I knew Iceland was beautiful, but this… this is something else entirely.

Our day began with breakfast at Húsið. I savored a hearty meal, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's adventures. I had a traditional Icelandic skyr with berries, and Mateo devoured his pancakes with gusto. He's really taken to Icelandic cuisine, which is a pleasant surprise. Klara enjoyed her coffee, looking out at the stunning views.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the reserve. The trails here are unlike anything I've ever experienced. They wind through valleys carpeted in wildflowers, climb over rocky ridges, and offer panoramic views of the fjords. The air is so clean and crisp; it feels like you're breathing life itself. I even spotted a few rare birds, but I really wish I hadn't forgotten my field guide! I made a mental note to ensure it's packed for our future trips. I was really hoping to identify the birds I saw.
The highlight of the day, without a doubt, was our encounter with an Arctic fox. We were hiking along a coastal path when Mateo suddenly stopped and pointed. There, in the distance, was a beautiful white fox, its fur blending seamlessly with the snow-dusted landscape. We watched it for a good half-hour as it playfully stalked voles in the grass. It was a magical moment, one that I know Mateo will remember forever. Klara managed to capture some amazing photos, which I can't wait to share.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
For lunch, we stopped at Edinborg Bistro. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. I had a lamb stew, and Klara chose the fish of the day. Mateo, of course, opted for the burger. It was a perfect midday break, and we all felt refreshed and ready for more exploring.

In the afternoon, we ventured further into the reserve, hiking towards a remote waterfall. The scenery was incredible. Water cascaded down the rocks, creating a symphony of sound. Mateo was fascinated, and he spent ages throwing pebbles into the pool at the bottom of the falls. I took the opportunity to reflect on the beauty around me. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the importance of disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature. As a mobile app developer, I spend so much time in front of screens that I sometimes forget the simple joys of being outdoors.
As evening approached, we made our way back to the campsite. The midnight sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the landscape. We decided to take a detour to the local bar in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. It was a cozy little place, filled with locals and fellow travelers. We enjoyed a drink and chatted with some interesting people. It's amazing how easily you can connect with others when you're surrounded by such natural beauty.

Dinner was at Einarshusid, a charming restaurant with a view of the fjord. I savored fresh seafood, while Klara tried the local reindeer dish. Mateo enjoyed his pasta. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly. It was a perfect way to end a perfect day.

Back at the campsite, as I write this, the midnight sun is still shining brightly. It's an incredible phenomenon, one that I'll never forget. Mateo is fast asleep in his tent, dreaming of Arctic foxes and waterfalls. Klara is reading a book, enjoying the peace and quiet.
Tomorrow marks the end of our adventure in Hornstrandir. We will be visiting Kvítár Lodge, Café Riis Hólmavík - Restaurant - Pizzeria & Bar, Restaurant Galdur - Seafood Restaurant, Jötunn restaurant and Kertahúsið Candle House. I'm already feeling a pang of sadness, but I know that we'll carry the memories of this trip with us forever. Hornstrandir has touched our hearts in a way that few places have. It's a place of raw beauty, of untamed wilderness, and of profound peace. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to share it with my family.
Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to reflect on the day. I thought about the Arctic fox, the waterfall, and the midnight sun. I thought about the importance of disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature. And I thought about the love that I share with my family. It was a perfect day, a day that I'll cherish forever. I also realized that I’d forgotten a portable solar charger and extra batteries for the camera. I was lucky that Klara managed to capture great photos, but I'll make sure to pack them next time.
As I close my eyes, I can still hear the whispers of Hornstrandir. They're telling me to come back soon, to explore its hidden valleys and climb its rugged peaks. And I know that I will. This is a place that I'll never forget, a place that will always hold a special place in my heart.
I'm already looking forward to sharing tomorrow's adventure with you all. Goodnight from the land of the midnight sun!
Until tomorrow,
Juan
