Uji: A Journey Through Time and Taste
Today, Klara, Mateo and I ventured beyond Kyoto's city limits to explore the serene town of Uji, a place famed for its exquisite tea and historical significance. It was a day filled with tranquil temples, the aroma of green tea, and moments of family bonding that I'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. The restaurant was a short train ride away, and the food was incredible. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Klara enjoyed a Western-style toast with eggs. Mateo, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by devouring a bowl of rice with miso soup. It was a great way to energize ourselves for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we hopped on a train to Uji. The journey itself was a treat, with picturesque views of the Japanese countryside unfolding outside the window. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the passing scenery, pointing out the different houses and landscapes. The anticipation of exploring Uji was palpable as we neared our destination.
Byodoin Temple: A Glimpse into Paradise
Our first stop in Uji was the magnificent Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we approached the temple, the iconic Phoenix Hall came into view, its reflection shimmering in the pond before it. The sight was truly breathtaking, and I felt a sense of awe wash over me. The intricate details of the hall, with its graceful curves and vibrant colors, were a testament to the craftsmanship of the Heian period.

We strolled through the temple grounds, admiring the meticulously maintained gardens and the serene atmosphere. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the koi fish swimming in the pond, their bright colors adding to the beauty of the scene. Klara, with her architect's eye, was captivated by the temple's design and its harmonious integration with the natural surroundings.
Inside the Phoenix Hall, we were mesmerized by the Amida Buddha statue, its golden glow radiating peace and tranquility. The intricate carvings and paintings on the walls depicted scenes from Buddhist mythology, offering a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs of the time. I found myself reflecting on the impermanence of life and the pursuit of enlightenment, a theme that resonated deeply with me.
The beauty of Byodoin Temple is not just in its physical form, but also in the sense of peace and serenity it evokes, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and art.
Leaving the temple, we took a moment to appreciate the surrounding landscape. The Uji River flowed gently nearby, its waters reflecting the clear winter sky. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the chirping of birds. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys of life.
A Taste of Tradition: Uji Tea Experience
No visit to Uji would be complete without experiencing its famed tea culture. We made our way to Fujiya for lunch, eager to sample the local delicacies. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a traditional Japanese ambiance. We were seated at a low table, and the aroma of green tea filled the air.

Klara and I opted for the Uji tea set, which included a variety of local specialties. The highlight was the matcha ice cream, its rich, earthy flavor a perfect complement to the sweetness of the ice cream. Mateo, of course, couldn't resist trying the matcha parfait, a layered dessert with green tea sponge cake, red bean paste, and whipped cream. It was a culinary delight, a testament to the artistry and skill of the local chefs.
After lunch, we decided to immerse ourselves further in the world of Uji tea with a visit to Taihoan tea house. Taihoan is open every day from January 10 to December 20, and you are invited to taste Uji green tea in this comfortable and serene location.. We participated in a traditional tea ceremony, learning about the history and preparation of matcha. The tea master, with her graceful movements and serene demeanor, guided us through the ritual, explaining the significance of each step. The taste of the matcha was exquisite, its slightly bitter flavor balanced by the sweetness of the accompanying Japanese sweets. It was a sensory experience that awakened my senses and deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture.
Mateo was surprisingly attentive during the tea ceremony, showing a genuine interest in the process. He even attempted to whisk his own bowl of matcha, much to the amusement of the tea master. It was a heartwarming moment, a reminder of the importance of sharing cultural experiences with my family.
Kyoto Star Bar: A Nightcap in Style
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Kyoto, feeling content and fulfilled. Before heading back to the hotel, Klara and I decided to indulge in a nightcap at the Kyoto Star Bar. Mateo was fast asleep, so we left him in the care of my parents at the hotel. The bar was located in a quiet alleyway, its entrance marked by a discreet sign. Inside, the atmosphere was sophisticated and intimate, with soft lighting and plush seating.

The bartender, a kimono-clad gentleman with a warm smile, greeted us and offered us a seat at the counter. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, while Klara opted for a classic gin and tonic. The cocktails were expertly crafted, their flavors complex and balanced. We sipped our drinks, savoring the moment and reflecting on the day's adventures.
The Kyoto Star Bar was the perfect ending to a perfect day. It was a place where we could unwind, reconnect, and appreciate the simple pleasures of life. As we walked back to the hotel, hand in hand, I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my loved ones.
Tomorrow, we're off to Nara to see the Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park, which I know Mateo is very excited about, especially meeting the deers. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
This trip to Kyoto has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of cultural immersion, family bonding, and personal reflection. As we continue our adventure, I'm excited to see what other treasures this beautiful country has in store for us.
Despite the cold January weather, with average highs of 5.8°C (42.4°F) and lows dipping to -0.2°C (31.6°F), Kyoto has managed to charm us with its beauty and warmth. Maybe we will come back in November, to see the autumn colors as well.
Until tomorrow!
