Family Adventure in Kyoto: Exploring Culture and Nature
Day 9: Deer Friends and Temple Wonders: A Day in Nara
Discover the magic of Nara with friendly deer, ancient temples, and delightful culinary experiences. A perfect family day trip from Kyoto!
Nara's Enchanting Embrace
Today, we ventured beyond Kyoto's city limits and found ourselves immersed in the serene beauty and historical charm of Nara. It was a day filled with gentle deer, magnificent temples, and culinary delights that tantalized our taste buds. Nara, with its unique blend of nature and culture, offered an experience that resonated deeply with all of us.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mezopotamia Kebab House back in Kyoto. I know, I know, having Kebab in Japan sounds a bit off, but I wanted to try something different! Plus, Mateo is a big fan of Kebab, so it was a win-win. The warm, savory flavors fueled us for our journey to Nara. It was a surprisingly delicious start to a day filled with Japanese culture, a little taste of home away from home, if you will.

The train ride to Nara was smooth and efficient, a testament to Japan's incredible public transportation system. Klara enjoyed watching the scenery change as we left the urban sprawl of Kyoto behind. I used the time to finalize our itinerary for the day, ensuring we wouldn't miss any of Nara's highlights.
Our first stop was Todai-ji, a temple that truly lives up to its name as the Great Eastern Temple. Even though it was rebuilt in 1709, the sheer scale of the wooden structure is breathtaking. The Daibutsu, a colossal bronze Buddha statue housed within, left us in awe. Mateo's eyes widened as he gazed up at the towering figure, and he peppered me with questions about its history and significance. I tried my best to explain the story of the temple and the statue, simplifying the details for his young mind. The intricate details of the architecture and the spiritual aura of the place made a lasting impression on all of us. It's amazing how a structure built centuries ago can still inspire such wonder and reverence.

Nara is a place where ancient history and natural beauty intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
Leaving Todai-ji, we strolled into Nara Park, where the famous friendly deer roam freely. Mateo was beyond excited to meet these gentle creatures, and we immediately purchased some *shika senbei* (deer crackers) from a nearby vendor. The deer, accustomed to human interaction, approached us with polite bows, a behavior they've seemingly learned over centuries. Mateo giggled as he offered them the crackers, their soft noses tickling his hands. It was heartwarming to see him connect with these animals, his initial hesitation melting away as he realized how gentle they were. Klara, ever the cautious one, reminded us to be mindful and respectful of the deer, maintaining a safe distance and avoiding any sudden movements.

I learned that these deer are considered sacred messengers of the gods, a belief that dates back centuries. Killing a deer used to be a crime punishable by death! Today, they are protected as national treasures, and it's easy to see why. They add a unique charm to Nara Park, creating a magical atmosphere that's unlike anything I've experienced before.
We spent a leisurely afternoon wandering through the park, enjoying the crisp winter air and the beautiful scenery. The park itself is expansive, spanning over 660 hectares, and is adorned with walking trails and tranquil ponds. The bare trees had a stark beauty, and the occasional dusting of snow added to the picturesque landscape.
After our delightful encounter with the deer and the majestic Todai-ji, we made our way to the Nara Visitor Center & Inn. It was a great place to relax, use their free Wi-Fi, and gather more information about Nara. I even managed to exchange some currency, which was quite convenient. Mateo was thrilled to find a small play area where he could unwind after all the walking. We also took a look at the local crafts and products they had on display, a nice way to appreciate the local artistry.

For lunch, we headed to Shinsen, a charming cafeteria near Kasuga Taisha Shrine, based on a recommendation I found online. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Japanese dishes. I opted for the *kitsune udon*, a warm noodle soup with fried tofu, while Klara chose the *tempura soba*. Mateo, always a fan of rice, had a simple *onigiri* set. The food was delicious and comforting, a perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures. We savored each bite, appreciating the subtle flavors and the fresh ingredients.

Before dinner, we did some last-minute shopping at the Nara Visitor Center & Inn. I picked up a few small souvenirs for friends back in Potsdam, while Klara found a beautiful hand-painted fan. Mateo chose a plush deer toy, a tangible reminder of his encounter with the gentle creatures of Nara Park.
As evening approached, we prepared for our final culinary experience of the day: dinner at Kikunoi Roan. Securing a reservation at this two-Michelin-starred restaurant was a challenge, but I managed to book a table a few weeks in advance. Known for its modern take on *kaiseki* cuisine, Kikunoi Roan promised a unique and unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant itself was elegant and understated, with a serene atmosphere that set the stage for the meal to come.

*Kaiseki* is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner, and Kikunoi Roan elevates it to an art form. Each dish was a masterpiece of culinary creativity, blending traditional techniques with innovative flavors and presentations. We started with an *aperitif* of sake with a hint of chrysanthemum, followed by a series of appetizers that showcased the season's freshest ingredients. The *hassun*, a beautifully arranged platter of various delicacies, was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The sashimi was exquisitely fresh, and the *dobin-mushi*, a clear broth with seafood and mushrooms, was both comforting and refined.
The service at Kikunoi Roan was impeccable, with each course explained in detail and served with grace and precision. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, catering to our every need and making us feel truly welcome. I was particularly impressed by their ability to explain the complex flavors and techniques in English, making the experience accessible and enjoyable for us.
Mateo, surprisingly, was well-behaved throughout the meal, captivated by the elegant presentations and the exotic flavors. He even tried a few dishes that were outside his comfort zone, a testament to the restaurant's ability to appeal to all ages. Klara and I savored each course, appreciating the artistry and the passion that went into every dish. It was a truly unforgettable culinary experience, one that we will cherish for years to come.
As we made our way back to Kyoto, I reflected on the day's adventures. Nara had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of culture, nature, and gastronomy. From the gentle deer of Nara Park to the majestic Todai-ji Temple and the exquisite Kikunoi Roan, every moment was filled with wonder and delight. It was a day that brought us closer as a family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we're off to Osaka! We plan to visit Osaka Castle and immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Dotonbori. We also have reservations at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya for dinner, so I'm excited to experience their *teppanyaki* cuisine. I am also hoping to sneak in some time for shopping at Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street. I'm sure it will be another day filled with exciting discoveries and delicious food. Stay tuned!
For now, *oyasumi nasai* (good night) from Kyoto!
